So I’ve been thinking. All the $10m+ in the league. How many of them have really accomplished Stanley cups? As of right now there are 15 players earning over $10M and 4 of them won Stanley Cups and one of them is LTIRetired sadly. And then we have William Nylander’s extension that will earn him $11.5M AAV. Sure we can all agree these players are elite and even franchise level stars. But if they can put up the production and perform in the playoffs, then why wouldn’t Jake Guentzel earn a contract that could earn him over $10M? He’s accomplished the highest prize of all and since coming in the league he’s still been a playoff performer for us and still putting up some elite production. You could say it’s cause he plays with Sid all you want but that isn’t going to stop his production. There’s a reason why he’s been glued with Sid is because he’s the best winger Sid has ever had. For me the scoring, playoff performance, accomplishments, Stanley Cup, is more than enough to pay a guy like Guentzel $10M. We have the cap space for that.
Cap space isn’t the issue in regard to resigning Guentzel, it’s whether or not he has indicated that he wants to extend in PIT. Personally, I think that if he indicated that he wanted to stay, then he’d already be extended by now. If he’s given no inclination that he plans to resign then Dubas has to do what’s right for the team and move him. We can’t let him walk in free agency for free, especially with our subpar stock of future assets.

THIS.
Dubas has a vision. If Jake is going to be part of the core's last years, he would have been extended by now. It could be any day now that the move is made.
Here's hoping JR comes in with his aggressive buying style and we get one of Vancouver's top prospects.

You’d think it'd already be done if he were to extend, but I’m still not completely ruling it out. With that said, the odds are that he’s moved and, given the circumstances, I can’t say that it wouldn’t be the right decision. This team needs youth and assets both for the sake of the current product and obviously the future product. Moving a player of Jake’s caliber is the best way to make that happen. It’ll be a fun and interesting deadline to say the least. Probably the most interesting since we traded for Hossa. Buckle up, man.
