Description

Following this loss, we are 30-25-2 and tied for the final wild card spot. We have 6 games left until March 8th.

At what point do we decide to sell at the deadline? If we go .500 over the next 6 games, we would be 33-28-2 and probably on the outside looking in.

For the purpose of the breakdown below, the following are notes to explain what each category represents.
- Future Core: players I expect to be a part of our next contention window. These include our Top 9 F, Top 4 D, and starting goalie.
- Future Depth: players that could potentially fit into the lineup one way or another.
- Trade Candidate: players that could be used as pieces in trades for the foreseeable future.
- Contract Expiration: players that will stay with the Blues until the end of their deal and not be extended.

For S's and G's, I put Brady Tkachuk in there, I genuinely can envision the Blues signing him as a free agent in 2028.

As for the trade candidates, this is what I’m thinking:
Buchnevich - 2024 TDL, 2024 Offseason, or 2025 TDL
- Hoping to get a solid prospect and a 1st round pick
Saad - 2025 TDL or 2025 offseason
- M-NTC beginning 2025-26
- Hockey trade for another player or a 2nd/3rd pick
Hayes - 2024 TDL, 2024 offseason, or 2025 TDL
- Should get a 2nd/3rd depending on retention by STL
Leddy - 2025 TDL or 2025 offseason
- M-NTC beginning 2025-26
- Should fetch maybe a 3rd but probably a 4th
Faulk - 2024 offseason, 2025 TDL, or 2025 offseason
- M-NTC beginning 2025-26
- Should fetch a 3rd round pick and a B-level prospect

By most accounts the decision to sell was made at last deadline for this season as well and probably next. Almost positive we wont be buying. Maybe something similar to like Kapanen off waivers, or Hayes at 50%, some sort of bargain bin deal on a player who hasn't worked out where they're at at a very cheap price.

What it does though with us at least being in the playoff conversation is it make Doug alot more likely to hold which is fine. In all reality for us it's probably better. I dont see it as a situation where he wont sell a guy like Buch, but he's also not going to take something he doesn't love.

I agree, but unless the difference is massive between the normal TDL package for a first liner as a rental vs now, there's no reason to jump unless you love something that's being offered. Fair value isn't an option when fair value isn't fair because it's not accounting for having Buch for 2 seasons at an extremely good cap hit. If nobody wants to pay it fine, wait til next season. At least we don't run the risk of our entire group getting fractured by the loss midseason

Yeah that’s a great point. If no one wants to pay the price now, no reason to trade for the sake of trading when we could sell him next TDL and still get probably a 1st and a decent prospect
