Description
Dubas was pretty adamant in his press conference that it was owed to the core to continue to try and surround them with whatever talent they can to continue to try and make playoff runs. They're absolutely not starting a rebuild yet, that won't happen until the core retires. There is literally no difference in starting a rebuild now or in three years given the teams assets/contracts.

I also fully anticipate that the penguins will try and add more cap space by moving contracts at the 2024 TDL and possibly in the summer (Smith, Eller, Rakell, graves if they can)

For starters before anyone blows up, all of the UFA signings are not the value that I believe the team will pay the player. These are just signings of players that I think the penguins could/should look at and totally understand that some of these guys will probably stay with their current teams.

IMO some of these guys like DeBrusk/Bertuzzi/Beauvillier are all having down years a bit, so I wonder what their value will be going into the summer, given the cap going up and speculation that it goes up again the following summer, maybe some guys take 1 year deals.

I'd also say that someone like Forsling is only an option if Graves is moved.

Dubas also mentioned wanted to add younger pieces, so to an extent some of the below signings are younger, and the trades i'll propose will also be for mostly younger players.

Also for the trades, I know I mention some of the teams being up against the cap and I know just like the penguins those teams can free up space by trading away players, i'm just looking at things as they stand now because reality is every team at some point in a cycle gets trapped against the cap and has to maybe move someone they'd prefer not to move.

Honorable Trade mention would be Pinto, I doubt they let him walk but they're another team with a lot of pieces and not a ton of cap space.

A guy that Dubas drafted so there is familiarity there. Now I know leaf's fans like him, and would probably aim to keep him, but as things stand they have about $21M in cap space for the summer but will need to add 2 top 4 D, a top 6 forward and a starting goalie I would assume, so the cap will add up fast.

So this to me goes along with Dubas's previous comments of looking to make trades with teams against the cap, and adding familiar youth.

    2. Lizotte, Blake [Droits de RFA]

The Kings are another team that while they will have around $22M in cap space this summer, will be up against the cap and imagine a chunk of cash is going to Byfield (as it should) but they'll have other needs in their bottom six, 1A and B goalies and on defense.

This prompts the question if both of these players can be acquired given the space on the team. Again it fits the model for Dubas of youth + team up against the cap.

      1. Holloway, Dylan [Droits de RFA]
      EDM
Holloway is another intriguing player and again young with upside that could be another target. The Oilers are going to only have about $14M in cap space in the summer and a lot of positions to fill + the on going Campbell situation.

I'm sure this will be someone they'll attempt to retain, but at the end of the day they need to sign quite a few players with very little cap so maybe he becomes an option.

        ARI
Not really sure what Arizona's plan is. They've had a decent season and I imagine they'll sell at the deadline but I think Juuso would be a great add for the third pair.

AZ obviously has tons of cap so they could easily resign.

          CGY
so this is a big brain trade idea thought. Mangiapane will go into his final year of his contract in the summer with the Flames and it's pretty obvious they're aiming to be big sellers at the 24 TDL (Hanifin, Tanev, Markstrom)

So I would assume with that that they'll try and retool a bit but maybe over a season or two? Which makes me wonder if someone like Mangiapane would be available. To me he's exactly the type of forward the penguins are missing that can get to the net and be a problem in front of the net.

Not sure if that's realistically someone they'd part with, but If Dubas wants to surround the core with talent as he mentioned, I think this should be high on the list.

            CAR
**Yes canes fans I know these are probably off the table** But it's worth the thought. Canes will have a decent chunk of cap but in the same light have a lot of heavy free agents and I imagine Jarvis will get a pretty big pay day but then there is still Teravainen, Pesce, Skjei, Drury, Necas, etc. To me it feels like 1 or 2 of the UFA/RFAs for the Canes won't be able to be kept and given both Necas and Drury are younger guys I had to throw them on this list as someone that Dubas could try and target in a trade.

Now I know a trade between two rivals is pretty unlikely, but again this is a player that I need to add and i'm sure the rangers would ask a lot for an in division trade, but it's still worth mentioning given some of the guys the rangers have to resign over the summer (Kakko being one, Lindgren and Schneider) and their current cap situation isn't great. Of course they can make some moves to send out contracts but these again are two attractive players and worth mentioning for what appears to be Dubas's goal.
                8.
                VAN
So this is a moon shot. I know Brock is having an awesome year, and I also know that before the year there was plenty of trade rumors around him.

The reason I feel like there could be a slight chance that they move someone like Brock is that even with almost $36M in cap space next season, close to a third of that is most likely going to Pettersson, and I would assume another $15-$17M between Lindholm and Hronek. I know they don't have a lot of piece that need added in the offseason after Pettersson/Lindholm/Hronek, but the thought still is there that they may need to clear some cap because realistically it wouldn't shock me if those three players took up around $28M

                  1. Lundell, Anton [Droits de RFA]
                  FLA
This is obviously a long shot, but the panthers have a lot of players to sign in the offseason, and not a ton of cap to do so, about $28M and I assume that at least 50% of that if not more goes to Reinhart and Montour. Even a guy like Forsling could get a chunk.

I'm confident they'll resign Lundell, but it could become a situation where there isn't going to be a deal and they look to move him.

Kaliyev is definitely available, but I think the Kings would like to bring back Lizotte. If someone made a reasonable offer for him that fills a need, I think he could be made available. They're not going to give him away for peanuts.

oh for sure, I'm not saying it would be for peanuts either. My goal of the post was simply looking at potential buying options, I have no idea what price would be on any of these which is why I left them blank.

Fair. Lizotte is projected to get $2¼M on his extension, and I don't think the Kings can afford that.

where did you see that out of curiosity? I know someone (probably multiple people) do those projections on their website, just can't remember.

My thoughts are it will be impossible for Dubas to do much to improve the team AND get younger. Pick a path and follow it 100%. 50/50 usually ends in the worst end result.
