Description
So Hughes traded Weber for Dadanov in a one for one deal, here is the breakdown of those contracts:

SHEA WEBER
- Cap Hit: $7.86M
- Term Remaining: 4 years
- Total Salary: $2.4M (LTIR 35+ Insured at 60%)

EVGENI DADANOV
- Cap Hit: $5M
- Term Remaining: 1 Year
- Total Salary: $6.5M

We also know what the cost was to dump each of these players based on 2 seperate trades:

SHEA WEBER
- Traded to Arizona with a 5th round pick for Dysin Mayo.

EVGENI DADANOV
- Traded to Anaheim (vetoed by the league afterwards due to Dadanov's NTC) with a 2nd round pick for John Moore and Ryan Kesler's LTIR contracts (estimated total salary remaining of ~$1.1M LTIR insured).

Therefore this is what the trades should have been...

To Arizona:
- Shea Weber ($2.4M remaining on LTIR)
- 5th Round Pick

To Montreal:
- Dysin Mayo ($2.85M remaining over 3 years, but a depth RD... basically do this instead of signing Brady Keeper)

To Vegas:
- Paul Byron ($560k remaining on LTIR)

To Montreal:
- Evgeni Dadanov ($6.5M Salary)
- 2nd round pick

Basically (while still trading Weber and Dadanov) the habs should have ended up with Mayo and a 2nd round pick while dumping Byron in exchange for a 5th round pick... Vegas are the true winners of this trade, as they ended in dumping a $5M cap hit for the mere cost of a 5th round pick while getting a depth roster player back in return.

The reason it made sense to Vegas to acquire Weber and trade Dadanov was as you suggest the was in helpful for Vegas cap. (Vegas had no player on performance bonuses)

The reason the trade made sense to Montreal was that Montreal had young players with performance bonuses. Weber's 7.8m would have to included in the cap before the bonuses were added to the cap.
Montreal might have been in the position of being over the cap in some of Weber contract years when bonuses were included which would have decreased the cap allowed by the cap in the following year.

No, it made perfect sense to the Habs and Vegas. Now would Montreal done better by dumping Weber onto Vegas.....maybe.

MTL still hit bonus overages and they are still in that position right now with Carey Price being on LTIR. That's not why they traded Weber but rather to maximize their offseason LTIR pool... they do not get any of the benefits you speak of until they get out of LTIR.

And I get why both teams did the trades, thats obvious, but do you not see the breakdown of how MTL could have played it better? Read the description... they could have literally just traded Weber to Arizona and still took Dadanov from Vegas but for the same compensation Vegas previously agreed to with Anaheim... which was a 2nd round pick.

Basically, Vegas managed to dump Dadanov for a 5th round pick when the cost to do so was a 2nd round pick just a few months before that.

Based on the precedent of Vegas' trade with Anaheim, and their trade with Arizona, MTL could have gotten a 2nd round pick in this deal and still dumped Weber.
