Early insight is MTL will not be picking Matvei Michkov at 5th overall, a couple names that are out there for MTL are Leonard and Reinbacher. Now I would just take Michkov personally, but let's say MTL is dead set against it for their own reasons - if so I would explore the a trade down scenario. Detroit would probably make the most sense in that their is a decent enough gap between 9th and 5th that they might be interested in trading up to get a player they really want, plus they also have another 1st round pick.
Here are 4 names (besides Michkov) that could potentially be available at 9th overall that I like and their average ranking on elite prospects including Wheeler + Pronman from the Athletic.
I think those average rankings are off a bit because some are probably outdated, but the takeaway from this is the two prospects MTL seemingly likes might be available at 9th overall, and even if they aren't there will be comparable prospects like Dvorsky that should also be available. There are other names that will be there too like Benson, Moore, Wood, Danielson, Simashev, But, etc... if MTL isn't taking Michkov they would be best served trading down IMO.
So the question is, would Detroit be interested in trading up to 5th for Michkov, or perhaps another prospect they are bug on that they feel won't be there at 9th?
I used the Athletic draft pick value chart for the basis of the trade.
With 17th overall MTL could play it by ear at the draft and see what's available or use it to pull the trigger on a Dubois deal as well.
Anyways, thought this would make for an interesting discussion, for the sake of the argument let's assume MTl has already decided internally to pass on Michkov.
17th overall. Basically they Horvat trade template, could be someone other than Ylonen but I like the Ylonen fit... gives the Jets a prospect that is ahead on development vs Kidney as they are still going to want to be competitive, Ylonen would be on the Jets bottom 6 scoring line with Dvorak.
Wings say thank you very much. It I think 17 is already reserved for a different trade
I say screw that plan and get Michkov.
This deal isn't far off in value, it just really depends on who MTL wants to take and if they'll be there (Either Reinbacher or Leonard).
