Description
What do the Rangers do if some team offers Lafreniere $4,201,487 (2nd round pick compensation).

Using Darnell Nurse as a comparable for resigning Miller to a 2 year bridge, and factoring in their bonus overages from 2022-23, the Rangers would only have $4,201,487 to fill a minimum of 4 spots for a 20 man roster ($1,050,371 / player). Realistically, it's not manageable without making other moves.

If this scenario occurs, do the rangers ship players out to get the necessary cap space in order to keep Lafreniere? If so who goes? Or do they just cut their losses and let Lafreniere walk?

Say a team calls to negotiate a trade with the threat of an offersheet if a trade can't be reached, what is the asking price?

Genuinely curious, what would your strategy be to defend a Lafreniere offersheet if you were the Rangers GM?

Realistically, yes realistically… is anyone going to offer that to Laf? Probably not is my guess?

Now would capfriendly users? Absolutely, as we’ve seen.

Would NHL GM’s however? Ehhhh no, probably not.

As in it is too much salary?

Carolina got Kotkaniemi from MTL with a $6.3M offersheet which was an overpay, and then negotiated a contract worth less than $5M for 8 years, he is now Carolina's 2C and will only get better.

This offersheet is less (and therefore less likely to work) however MTL has so much cap space heading into next season that they would still have over $10M after this deal with a Hoffman buyout.

Laf had 35 even strength points last season, he would probably get PP1 in MTL, > 50 pts. A 21 year old Quebec player that was a formal 1st Overall would certainly interest the habs at the right price. In this case a 2nd round pick would be a no brainer, well worth the $4M investment.

But habs would rather make a trade then an enemy also I'm sure.

Real world, Laf would be offered a $4.2M on a 1 year term, but that sets his QO the following year.

Laf is likely moving into bust territory soon, and having him as an RFA for 1 year, then having to pay him again $4.2M might not be worth it, especially given Montreal's 2nd rd pick could very well be 33 to 40.

Can't see any NHL GM making a move to waste $8-9M in hard cash of their owners without showing any appreciable growth in the standings or playoff revenues.

Also, Montreal is a terrible fit, given how stacked they are on the wings.

I don't KK is going to get any better, this is pretty much his ceiling, that contract will age well if he remains consistent, but I highly doubt KK will ever become a PPG player.

Bust is relative, will he ever live up to the hype of 1st Overall, most definitely not. But will he be worth a 2nd round pick, for sure. Absurd to hope for a better player at 33 - 40 as you suggest.

I believe Laf would benefit from a change of scenery.

Here's my projection:
Lafreniere - Suzuki - Caufield
RHP - Dach - Anderson
Slafkovsky - Dvorak - Ylonen
Armia - Evans - Gallagher

*Buyout Hoffman

Kotkaniemi's qualifying offer was also $6.3M and then he signed a new deal at an AAV of $4.82M.
