Good scenario you laid out. If the cap goes to 75m next year, the Avs looks OK, but they still would have to give raises to their UFA Johnson, RFAs Barrie and Mckinnon. So the cap would have been tight.
I take look at the Avs forwards, and I think they should be solid there even without Stastny. Real NHL GMs and Armchair GMs seemed to think sometimes that they cannot lose their own UFAs, when the better road to take is to let them go and someone else inflated price and then to sign someone else with better value.
Just estimating, but at 7m a year puts Stastny in the about the top 15 salaries of NHL forwards. Do you really think, his current play puts in that elite status? Do you think St.Louis regrets making him their second highest paid player? My opinion is that the Avs were best to let Stastny leave (and Reilly) and spend their money wisely elsewhere.
