Description
I don't think there's reason to panic, the team looked very good earlier this season, and a minor slump doesn't concern me too much, especially when we've run the backup in 2/4 of the last games...

However, some of the underlying analytics do concern me a little bit. Analytically, the individual numbers for the top 6, and especially Chytil, do look very good, but the relative numbers seem to suggest a lack of chemistry on the first line and the 5v5 numbers look a bit problematic as well. We know this team has had struggles at 5v5 in the past, but we should be better this year with Laffy and Kakko coming in to their own.

PS: the next few paragraphs are gonna be very hypothetical, I genuinely don't think any of this is necessary, it's just what I would do if these scoring issues continue. Atm, I don't think any of this is necessary. It's just fun to speculate. (Except for the Rydahl callup, that's necessary and would help this team enormously)

I personally think our 5v5 problems are caused by one huge problem, Kreiders regression.
This might seem pretty obvious, he's not gonna put up 50 goals and 70 points on many more occasions, so a scoring regression was expected. The idea was that an increase in scoring from guys like Chytil, Kakko, and Lafreniere would make up for it. But, the problem does become a bit more concern when you look at his underlying 5v5 metrics. While Kakko and Zibanejad are both at or near the top of the team in 5v5 xG, Corsi, Fenwick, etc, Kreider is struggling. This is tanking the performance of the first line, which has struggled massively 5v5, and is mainly producing on the rush.

The obvious solution could be placing either Lafreniere or Panarin on the 1st line, however, the problem is that this would break up the Panarin - Trocheck - Laf line, which has performed well. While I would adore a Panarin - Zibanejad - Kakko line, which I really thought would happen this season, I don't think it's logical to break up the 2nd line.

Instead, I think the best course of action could be to promote Chytil to the 1st line, and move Kreider to the 3rd. This may sound like a strange move, but with the way Chytil has been playing, it makes sense to try to give him more ice time. Plus, he's historically played well on the LW, so it could be a way of revitalizing that 1st line, while giving the 3rd line more of an indentity.

There are some conditions that need to be met for this to happen though: Goodrow has to perform in the 3C slot, to make sure that line won't lose offensive output when Chytil leaves, Kravtsov has to find some chemistry with Goodrow, and Kreider needs to continue this regression, if the 1st line bounces back there's no point to a shakeup.

Ideally, in this situation, the 2nd line would remain the same, the 1st line would become more offensively dynamic, and the 3rd line would also improve, with Kreider, Goodrow, and Kravtsov being both defensively responsible and a scoring threat whenever they're on the ice.

I'd also like to see us call up Gustav Rydahl, who has been excellent in Hartford and looks like currently the best option at 4C. He, along with some combination of Vesey, Blais, Reaves, or Carpenter would create a very interesting 4th line that could be great on the forecheck.

Little bit of a panic move at the moment, but for sure a solution to deal with the regression of Kreider. Still early to acknowledge him in regression- but reality is he’s not a 50/70 guy…and in his 30s it is coming sometime soon.

My only issue with this hypothetical is Goodrow at 3C…woof!! Of course, not many options here. Lack of C depth always seems to come back to bite this team. Until they can add a mid 6 C (preferably a young guy who projects as an eventual 1 or 2 C), Chytl needs to stay at 3C.

I feel like Goodrow *could* be decent as the 3C, but definitely not an ideal option.

I do agree there is no reason to panic with Kreider. For now, I think he'll probably bounce back a bit, he's always had pretty solid underlying numbers, and he is a first line caliber player even when he isn't scoring 50 goals. The most likely scenario is he returns to being a ~30 goal, 50 point net front presence.

I think some of the regression at the start of this year could be attributed to players being more aware of his skill set (sort of like a sophomore slump) and the changes to the first line. Obviously, it'll take some time for him, Zib, and Kakko to work out their chemistry, but they have shown some signs that they can be a great line.

I certainly have more hope for this team than last year.. first line goodrow, second line hunt, that team was a mess, wasnt it?

Can live with that assessment regarding Goodrow at 3C...But I just think putting Kreider and Krav out there with a grinder at C is not the best scenario. Not heavily vested here- if things were to go south where a shakeup were needed, then I guess why not try- in reality though, I don't think Goodrow is the best match for these guys- especially Krav.

If Kreider reverts back to 30/50...nothing really wrong with that as long as Zib and Kakko produce.

At this point I wouldn't point to regression- just that the PP (which started the year on fire) has been ice cold recently. Don't forget: a big portion of his 50 goal season was PP goals...he's had a few near misses, and that unit shouldn't stay cold for too long- so he will get some real good chances to regain that scoring touch.

Hope for this year: I look for them to build off last year. Even though they lost several guys who were key to their playoff run, I figured their success this year would be based on young players taking another step. So far it looks like that's happening with Kakko and LaF, and to a lesser extent with Miller. Any success they have this year in making the playoffs and going deep (or not doing one or either) will have to do with their young Dmen- Miller, Schneider, and Jones- stepping up. So far all 3 have had their struggles, but that's par for the course with young Dmen. Gallant has to keep the faith and allow them to work through their difficulties (really only pertains to Jones). Need these guys able to perform in order to take some work from Fox. We'll see- I'm optimistic! And one last thing: DO NOT MORTGAGE THE FUTURE FOR KANE!!

trading for Kane would be so so so dumb. people underrated what he'd actually cost, it would start with Kravstov and one of our 2023 picks, then probably another active roster player, maybe another 2nd or 3rd round pick on top of that, and for what? a slight upgrade at 2RW? which kid is getting demoted to make space for him in the top 6? both Kakko and Laf are finally playing and producing well, like really well, should we just keep stalling their development while shipping off any prospect worth a damn?

Excessive cost...for slight upgrade...someone's development gets stalled as Kane gets his role..."all in" on 1- just 1- Cup run. I've argued this at length, so wont waste anyone's time here going further- other than to mention (and shake my head at) the opinion of many...that this team has enough prospects and premium draft picks (so the 1sts we have as well as several prospects are expendable for Kane)....Utter and complete foolishness!!
