You could do way better by saving some on the third line and getting some better d men in there

Im not trying to build the best team, just making one out of defensive specialists. Those D men are all solid, which would you upgrade?

I got that, and i think you could build a better team around that philosophy if you cut some money on the third line and got some better d men.

Spurgeon isn’t a defensive specialist, and should be replaced at that cap figure. Find an extra million and change and you could upgrade that to mcavoy. Find another million and a bit and you could upgrade demelo to pesce which would be huge.

How is Spurgeon not a defensive specialist? Look at his 5v5 on ice stats: 1.76 GA/60 and 1.98 xGA/60. Those are crazy good numbers, 3rd best GA/60 rate in the league among D with 500+ mins and 7th best in xGA/60

Pesce has a good reputation but his defense wasnt great last year. He had the highest (as in worst) 5v5 xGA/60 rate of all CAR defenders and the 2nd highest (as in 2nd worst) GA/60 rate behind only Ethan Bear. On the other hand DeMelo had by far the lowest (best) 5v5 xGA/60 and GA/60 rates of all WPG defensemen and was in the 99th percentile in EV Defensive WAR/60 last year
