A case for that can absolutely be made. In fact The Athletic's GSVA model even indicates it. I'd argue that they're both having down years so both numbers should be higher (and have been higher in previous years), but their value is still close, and 1st + Kaut is absolutely a massive overpayment on top of Girard for Chychrun.

Girard was the only Dman in the 2021 playoffs with a zone-exit-fail-rate as low as 3%. Every other Dman in the league was at 6% or higher. Feel free to dismiss his transition game as "one facet of his game" despite the fact that Colorado are running away with the West and are everybody's favourite for the cup. Maybe his elite transition numbers have something to do with that.

Btw I never dismissed Chychrun as a bad player. He's absolutely a very good player worthy of a great return. I don't think Colorado would be adding much if anything if they traded Girard for him though. Nor do I actually think Arizona would be looking for a player like Girard in return if they moved Chychrun either.
