Kuznetsov is better than Tarasenko and Orlov is better than Dunn. The only way I do this trade is if St Louis is adding a lot of futures too.

The one positive is Dunn is younger than Orlov. But Orlov is our best defenseman.

In his last 27 games of 20-21, Kuznetsov had 25 points. In his last 12 games of 20-21, Tarasenko had six points. Trading a C for a RW gives WSH four proven top-six RWs and just Backstrom and Ovechkin at center and LW.

If WSH is all in on the next couple years and thinks Tank bounces back, maybe Oshie for Tank, Kostin, and a 2nd? Oshie got 43 points in 53 games this year at a lower cap hit than Tank. He's healthier. He can kill penalties and backcheck. He is owed 16.5M over four years, whereas Tank is owed 15M over just two years. Even if Oshie slows down in the last two years, STL comes out ahead on the big guys, and on value for the money, but maybe the futures balance it.

But the thing that Washington needs more than anything else is cap space, Orlov is solid enough but not 5.1 million solid. St Louis and Washington are both taking risks on struggling players that need a bounce back with Tarasenko and Kuznetsov, Orlov is traded for cap reasons and then the caps acquire the rights to Dunn and sign him on a buy low contract
