Description
Trade was Domi for Galchenyuk 1-for-1. That’s an obvious L. But they turned Galchenyuk into Kessel the following off-season and Kessel hasn’t been great but he’s certainly been better than Galchenyuk, and this year has been doing much better than Domi (on pace for 61 points with 29 goals in a full season).

Compare Kessel and Josh Anderson, Arizona also had to add quite a bit to get Kessel.

Kessel vs. Anderson is a fair comparison. When you put it that way it does seem like a loss. The full Kessel trade was Kessel, AHL/ECHL tweener, and a 4th for Galchenyuk and Pierre Olivier Joseph. Losing POJ in hindsight hurts but at the time there were questions about whether or not he would pan out, so I remember not being too torn up about losing him.

I’m not sure how much of “insider info” this is anymore, but a team source told me at the time of the original Domi v Galchenyuk trade that the trade was forced by Tie Domi, because he wanted his son to play for a Canadian team. And Max “needed a bigger market” to get him fired up about playing hockey again. So given the circumstances I don’t hate what we got.

Agreed.

I do wonder if that Anderson contract becomes a sore point for the Habs down the road though.

If that's actually the case, I would have sent him to f*cking Siberia (Which is basically what Torts is doing with him tears of joy)

Honestly though, it's mind boggling to me that Galchenyuk's 2nd best statistical season was his last in Montreal, and that his shooting percentage that season was almost 50% lower than the year before. How do you predict that a high-upside 23 year old is going to fall off a cliff so quickly?

Galchenyuk had a down year with the coyotes, but still scored at a decent pace. I remember being much more disappointed in losing him than POJ. But his career decline was certainly crazy to watch after he left.

Domi will probably get traded to Toronto for a bag of pucks like Tie always wanted and will have a career revival. He used to be one of my favorite players but now I dislike him quite a lot.
