I think I've suggested this same deal, and been talked out of it by other Caps fans.
On-ice value is pretty even this year. Cap hit is pretty even this year. Myers is younger and plays a more valuable position and is doing just great this year. On paper, I think WSH wins this one.
Five reasons WSH might not take it:
1. Leadership and familiarity. Oshie talks to his teammates, gives a lot of hi fives, and just seems like he helps them stay positive, so dealing him mid-season might hurt morale, even if Myers turns out to be just as great of a guy.
2. Power play spots. Oshie plays PP1R pretty well in WSH. Myers plays PP1RD maybe even better in Vancouver, but better than Ovechkin, Carlson, and Schultz? Hmmm... Needs more moving parts to create a need, and to replace Oshie as a power forward. Does Van want to offer a potential 30G power forward for Schultz to get WSH to want to trade for Myers on PP2? All ears.
3. Defensive intangibles: Oshie's there for penalty killing and faceoffs and playing on a checking line whenever he's asked. I don't know Myers as well, but I get the sense he's more focused on offense? Which is fine when you're good at it. And Myers is a good offensive defenseman. But... John Carlson and Alex Ovechkin play the points on the Caps' PP1.
4. Likelihood Seattle picks the highest scoring Washington-state born player in history to be their captain, opening up $5M in cap space for WSH, vs likelihood they take one of the best offensive defensemen likely available to them. I don't know. Maybe both. But I'm giving a slight edge to Oshie because his versatility and agelessness remind me more of Ron Francis as a player.
5. Contract structure. After this year, Myers earns 18M over three, while Oshie earns 19.5M over four years. Neither team is hurting for cash, I'm sure, but if Oshie can still play well, that's almost like getting the fourth year for free. Oshie could be pretty bad that year, but with Backstrom signed through the same year and a rumor that Ovechkin might seek the same term, it seems like maybe they'll just keep the band together, if Oshie doesn't get claimed.
