On 7/2/2020, Smith carries a $4.35m cap hit and a $2.35m salary. Ottawa is 20m short of the current cap floor at this point for next year, which will be even higher number next year anyway. Smith is the exact contract you can expect Melnyk to shop for, easy to acquire at a low cost and allow him to hit cap floor while paying significantly less in actual salary. Rangers wont have to add any premium at all to move Smith to Ottawa.

They sign Kreider party because of his chemistry with Mika, so you decide not to sign Strome, who has chemistry with Panarin? After they traded away Skjei to make cap room so they could sign Strome and DeAngelo.....yeah, not so ideal.
