There is actually precedent for the Kings firing someone in the middle of a long term contract, back when Mike Richards wound up a momentary UFA and then signed in Washington for 1M for a chance to win the Cup.

I'm hoping Kovalchuk finds his way to Mike Richards island, soon, personally, but that his language skills land him more of an audition on the top line than Richards got. Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, and Kovalchuk should be able to score a lot of goals. Moving Wilson or Vrana back to the third line could give the team some secondary scoring, which hasn't been an issue in the standings, yet, but is just nice to have.

LA will be on the hook for his cap hit, meaning next year they'll have over 11 million of dead cap space.

They don't need the cap space next season, but they do need the roster spot.

So you’re hoping that kovalchuk gets arrested with a ton of drugs? That’s the precedent your citing. You can’t just get rid of a players cap. The Richards deal was very different.
