Description

Marner is not Kucherov yet, but makes more than him here, at a younger age. This deal sets all kinds of RFA winger records, and is probably inflated and unreasonable now, but it won't be while they are contending for years to come, and the cap rises with new TV. Gardiner sees that potential, so he hasn't signed elsewhere, and takes a discount here, while bouncing back from injury, to stay a part of it. Dubas is a machine this offseason. I'm sure this trade will have some Isles fans foaming at the mouth, but that's unnecessary. The Leafs just outright buy Mayfield's beautiful contract here, and no one needs to be too grossed out by that. It is business, and the Isles can afford Ceci, while the best version of the Leafs cannot. Also, this being the Leafs window to win, they can afford to overpay with prospects and draft picks, and their 1sts are destined to be very late firsts...

I'm not sure if I decline is I'm the Isles. Ceci isn't needed this year, but he's on a 1 year deal with 4.5m coming off the books next year. If the Isles can move Leddy and Hickey in separate deals and Ceci and Boychuk rotate as the 7th D/2nd pairing RHD this would open up a spot for Dobson and the picks alone (2021 1st mainly) might be enough to swing this deal for the Isles.
