Description
2020 Caps team and some possible tweaks. Especially at goalie. Caps let Holtby walk, re-sign Backstrom to a long term deal to finish out his career in Washington.

Caps sign an underrated goalie that hasn't had a lot of chances, but shows a lot of promise (kind of like Grubauer for us in 2018). I think Darcy Kuemper is the guy. The deal I gave Kuemper is similar to that of Grubauer, but slightly less AAV for an additional year. This is generally what GMBM does to keep the AAV lower, and it could work for Kuemper too.

I also think Kuemper is a potential stud goalie (he has a .923 sv% in 84 GP since the start of the 17-18 season), and if not, at least just as good as Holtby has been in the regular season the last two years, but for half the price. Also trade Copley and bring up Vanecek, as next year his contract is one way. Samsonov gets to be the undisputed starter in Hershey for another year, and if he lights it up, then the Caps can expose either Kuemper or Vanecek in the Seattle draft.

Finally, with the extra cap space created by letting Holtby walk, and trading Copley and Djoos, they sign a stud RD in Justin Faulk and give him longer term to keep the AAV down again. In order to create cap space to re-sign Ovi in 2021, they trade Orlov in the off-season and that leaves room for Alex squared/Martin/Siegs to get more play time.

Thoughts? Is this crazy or genius or mad scientist? Let me know!

This gives Arizona a serviceable backup behind Raanta. Kuemper may be priced out of Arizona in free agency (because I'm going to sign him to the Caps).

We have a million LD, need a RD in free agency, since Gudas is gone in 2020. Trade Djoos, bring up Alex squared or Martin.

I like the thought process but I don’t think Kuemper will be available for that much. You are right about him being a stud. Put the Coyotes on his back last year. Someone will pay more than 3mil a year.

Holtby will be a “cap” casualty unfortunately. But i see no way around it after bob’s contract. Unless they trade Oshie and Orlov and then cash out on Samsonov. Seems highly unlikely and a lot to sacrifice for Holtz

I'm of the mind that Copley is better than what most people give him credit for, so I don't think that trading him away to facilitate signing a then 30 year old goalie to be a starter. Copley put up OK numbers behind a defense that hemorrhaged rush attempts and high danger chances, and seeing how bright the future is for Caps D, I'd be confident in him as a potential 1a/1b option for 2020-21. That said, if Samsonov isn't totally ready by that point, I wouldn't be opposed to signing a vet goalie as a 1a/1b to give Samsonov more AHL starts.

The Faulk signing is a bit iffy, only in that it depends on what you think you're getting out of him. He's never been a great defender, and overall his WAR (Wins Above Replacement, via evolving-hockey.com, check them out they're dope) expose him as a somewhat overrated D-man whose goalscoring ability doesn't always outweigh his other weaknesses. I wouldn't riot in response to that signing, but I wouldn't be singing GMBM's praises either.
