Description
Doubt Point would sign it but this would be preferable to offer sheeting Marner IMO. Marner's the better player but Point fills the 1C need and gives them a potent 1-2 scoring punch down the middle with Dubois.

Also would be able to move a defenseman for a middle 6 LW (i.e. Murray for Mike Hoffman) and put Texier in Cleveland to work on playing center.

Carry Dubinsky + Foligno for another year before trading/buying out to free up cap space, potential to trade Murray/Savard depending on how Kukan/Gavrikov do. Could conceivably clear cap for PLD/Anderson RFA extensions.

I was going to say something along the lines of "Jarmo seems determined to never pick in the first round again at any point of his GM career".

Texier, Bemstrom, Foudy, Marchenko are all really good forward prospects. Stenlund turned some heads last camp, too. Tarasov and Vehvilainen are great goalie prospects. Peeke is a solid defensive prospect and Carlsson still has some hope. So, they've got good current prospects.

Not like they can't move some of the veterans for picks, either. If Texier develops well at center, they could move Jenner and get some good picks. Same thing with Nyquist of Bemstrom develops, etc.

They've also got great defensive depth. If Murray stays healthy or Savard plays like he did in the playoffs, they have more than enough depth to move one of those guys for a first or a bundle of 2nds and 3rds.

Not exactly flush with high future picks, sure, but they have the current depth to make moves for picks down the road, and enough good forward prospects who will come up in the next 1-2 years that they'll be fine in the long run.

Purely from an asset management standpoint, what are the odds that the next four years of first round picks – after adding Brayden Point or Mitch Marner to an already-strong core – end up being more valuable than Point or Marner will be over the life of their contracts? I'd argue that the odds are not great, since you're likely looking at a playoff team here, plus they have plenty of pieces that could fetch them a first-rounder in the right situation (Murray, Savard, Jenner, etc.) and enough prospects to do so without missing a step on the ice.

If they move some of their surplus defensive depth for another scoring forward right now, they're probably still a bubble team. If they make a big splash like this without giving up any current roster players or impact prospects, they're likely a playoff team for the next 5+ years.

Not going to argue that they have a pretty good core, especially on the back end, but-

a) You better pray that the goaltending holds up.
b) Also pray that you don't have an injury on the back end.
c) Washington, Pittsburgh, Carolina and the Islanders haven't gotten worse. Philly has, and will continue to improve, as have the Devils. The Rangers should contend for a playoff spot as well. That's going to be the most competitive division in the league, and a couple of bad weeks could be the difference between a wildcard spot or a top 10 pick. Be careful.
