Description
Detroit will get a young, physical defenseman with offensive capability. Nurse has steadily improved year-over year and should be in the top 4, perhaps on the top pair in Detroit. Edmonton gets a forward who can keep up with McDavid and is coming off a 30-goal season. Athanasiou might be a bit more of a gamble, so I suggest a swap of 1st round picks. That gives Edmonton a better shot at a top forward, and doesn’t hurt Detroit’s chances of a strong young defenseman in this year’s draft. The other trades simply move salary out of Edmonton.

Mrazek is probably the best option available for Edmonton’s need in net. Stralman will need to be over-paid is he is going to go to Edmonton on a two-year deal. Having him in the line-up helps to off-set the loss of Nurse, just a bit. Between Stralman and Sekera, the coach would have two veterans who can help young defensemen develop. Panik and Donskoi aren’t the best forwards available this summer, but they would both be significant upgrades over Rieder. Last season Panik and Donskoi scored 28 goals and 70 points, combined. Playing with Draisaitl, it’s not unreasonable to suggest the two could combine for 30-35 goals and at least 90 points, and Leon would probably manage something between 80-100 points, without having to play with McDavid.

I believe Benson will make a strong case to stick with the Oilers after October. He would have to play on the 3rd line, which pushes Khaira to the fourth line, and Lucic to a depth role. I also think Puljujarvi will start on the third line. I’d like to see Marody make the team as well, and since they will need a right-handed Centre, why not give home a shot at the 4C. If it doesn’t work out, Cave and Brodziak can come in from Bakersfield.

Detroit says no thank you! Nurse is not worth AA and 2 spots in the draft. AA is untouchable anyways.

Yes it is. But if you looked at Detroit's roster you'd see we have 5 D that aren't waivers exempt because it looks like Kronwall is coming back to hit 1000 games. With 3 D in Grand Rapids that are good enough to start the season in Detroit. But it looks like they are going to share time. So unless I don't see Detroit taking on another defenseman unless one is going out either Ericsson or Daley. I happen to know that AA untouchable. Over the last few years Detroit has had trouble scoring and now they have 2 30g scorers they aren't letting either go. Larkin, AA, Mantha, Bertuzzi, Hronek and Cholowski are the core of the rebuild so unless a lopsided offer comes in they aren't going anywhere.

In posting this proposal, my thinking is entirely about Athanasiou playing alongside McDavid. Can you imagine what the pace of play might be like? If Athanasiou can pot 30 in Detroit, what number might he manage while playing with McDavid? It’s fun to imagine the possibilities.

In reality though, I think you are correct in suggesting such a trade would not happen.

1. Nurse is a 24-year-old, NHL veteran defenseman who has demonstrated steady improvement year-over-year, plays a physical game, can drop the gloves with anyone in the league, and is coming off a 41-point season (10 goals and 31 assists). He is already a top four defender, and is at least 3 years from the age at which NHL defensemen typically reach their prime.

2. Let’s be honest, Athanasiou has suffered inconsistency throughout his career, but has great offensive skill and is flat-out fast. He is 25 and just had a break-out season that might suggest he has finally started to achieve his potential, as he is of an age at which NHL forwards typically are in their prime. It also must be stated that 30-goal scorers are difficult to come by in today’s NHL.

Both of these players are core pieces to their respective teams, and those kinds of players aren’t moved very often. Given his history to date, Edmonton may not want to bet on Athanasiou being a perennial 30-goal scorer. For their part Detroit might prefer a right-handed shot and better passer than Nurse, he is more of a puck transporter.
