Chiarelli will over pay to get a top 2 dman for the long term. It's impossible for Edmonton to sign a top end dman through free agency, so his chances are better of doing it through a trade. Chiarelli signed Chara in 2006 to a $7.5 mill per year deal when the cap was $39 mill., or 19% of the total cap. That's the equivalent of $14.2 mill per year with today's cap. He values the position more than other GM's. Unless Shattenkirk is adamantly against going to Edmonton, I think Chiarelli waives a monster contract in front of him to sell him on coming to Edmonton for the next 8 years.
In order for Edmonton to agree to this trade, they would need Shattenkirk to agree to a long term deal. If not, then no deal.
