Bite the bullet and use this year's (late) 1st rounder to unload Ladd's terrible contract. Devils are willing to take the contract on in exchange for the 1st rounder knowing that they have plenty of cap room the next couple of years and will probably be able to use a compliance buy out on Ladd under the new CBA when it takes effect.

Isles use some of the cap space they freed up by unloading Ladd's contract and gamble that Neal's abnormally low shooting percentage was just bad luck and he will bounce back next year, while also getting rid of Uncle Leo's contract. As a bonus, Neal's contract is more easily buy out-able than Ladd or Komarov since there are no signing bonuses involved.

We can bury Ladd on LTIR and get the full cap relief/not lose the pick and worry about him next year. The full NTC becomes a 15 team NTC. Easier to move and a cheaper inducement because he has one less year on his deal.

A) LTIR doesn't give them full relief from his contract in real life, and B) it's a torn ACL; at some point next season he's going to be healthy enough to come back. I'd rather just suck it up and dump him for a mid-20s first round pick and be done with him.

Even if they use Aho on the third pair, it's worth keeping Hickey around for insurance. It's not like he has a huge cap hit. If Aho and/or one of their other defense prospects show they can handle a full time load it'll be easy enough to move Hickey at the deadline.
