As painful as trading Necas may seem, this trade really improves the Canes. The impending expiration of Eric Staal's contract shouldn't be a problem, as he is highly likely to re-up with this team. The top six is solid and there will be enough cap space left over to absorb Aho's and Teravainen's raises. Granlund is a great #1 RW (he won't play at center except to take face-offs when Aho is tossed) and Dubnyk will be strong when the playoffs roll around. My question would be whether Minnesota makes this trade because I don't know who they have in the wings to replace Dubnyk.
We pretty much only have Kahkonen, who just won top goalie at the AHL skills competition at the all-star game and has been named a goaltender of the month this year. He projects to be a starter, but he's about a year or two away from the NHL. Stalock, our backup, could also handle more games than he's been given and we signed the Hamburglar who could be called up if needed.
The reason we make this trade is for Necas.

I don’t understand this trade
What are the Canes gaining from this? You’re not getting THAT much better in goal (Dubnyk is wildly inconsistent the last two years). In addition, I’m not sure Granlund fits that well with Carolina. Not seeing him as an answer at Center for us. Necas should be that answer at center.
I don’t think it’s a very smart idea to trade Canes best prospect (who also happens to be one of the best center prospects in all of the NHL).
If Necas is going to be traded - you’d ideally be looking much bigger than this.
I’m sure Necas being part of an Ottawa trade gets you access to Stone’s agent to negotiate an extension.
Wildly inconsistent?
"Since Dubnyk’s debut with the Wild on Jan. 15, 2015, no NHL goaltender has a better goals-against average than Dubnyk’s 2.31 or more shutouts than his 21. Only Washington’s Braden Holtby has more wins than Dubnyk’s 154, and only Anaheim’s John Gibson has a better save percentage than Dubnyk’s .921 — by a hair at .922." Michael Russo, The Athletic (Jan 26th, 2019)
Dubnyk is far superior to any option the Canes currently have. None of your current goalies have consistently proven they can play over 30 games per year at as high of a level as Dubnyk. Dubnyk is an above-average goaltender signed to a team-friendly deal with term to give the Canes time to figure out their future netminder. He had a rough patch this year early on, but what goalie doesn't?
I completely understand not wanting to move Necas, but you are getting some very good pieces coming back here.
