Description
Assuming:
1) Marleau's cap hit is Toronto's problem and there is nothing they can do about it.
2) They want to try to keep the team together as much as possible with the fewest disruptions.
3) Gardiner is gone because they just can't afford his cap hit.

Then I think the simply answer is trading one more player (Nylander) for future picks and/or prospects can solve the cap problem for 2019-20 and at the same time keep our assets that we would have to give away for another team to take the likes of Zeitsev's cap hit.

The proposed trade below with Florida is to show what such a trade could look like.

Détails additionnels:
C/RW William Nylander traded to open up cap space for a couple of picks (1st and leafs own 5th back) and 2017 10th overall pick RW Owen Tippett that is a goal scorer with some size that has a solid potential of being a future NHL 1st or 2nd line winger

This trade happens after the July 1, 2019 signing bonus has been paid to Nylander making his actual salary for the next 5 years a bargain for Florida's cash flow. Florida will have the cap space needed without sending any cap back to Toronto.

Picks can be adjusted to make more far if needed but I think they are reasonable.

leafs would rather move someone like zaitsev and give up significant futures to do it than get futures for nylander. They want to win now, giving up nylander for futures hurts the window.

your value is fair, but i dont think it helps the leafs in their goal to win.

Nylanders going nowhere. Although I would like to get Heponiemi from Florida. He is so underrated playmaker it hurts.

IMO...your proposed solution contradicts your point #2 in the description.

I can see Nylander getting trade after July 1st this year...but not for futures. If they can move him and get an impact defender at a similar or lower price point then it may make sense.

I'm not even a huge fan of this deal...but I could see something like this being a benefit to both teams:

Post July 1st..leafs trade Nylander straight up for Pietrangelo (with $1-$2m retained). St. Louis gets nylander for 5 years at an AAV below $7m which is cheaper than re-signing Pietrangelo..who they may let walk anyway. Leafs...prior to executing the trade, negotiate a 5yr extension with Pietrangelo.

So leafs get Pietrangelo for his ages 29-35 who becomes a part of their "core" while getting $1-2.5m in cap savings next year
Blues get Nylander for his ages 23-27 while only needing to pay a salary of $700k next year...and an average of $6m over the final 4 years after that

That's a type of deal I can see Nylander being involved in.
