IMO...your proposed solution contradicts your point #2 in the description.
I can see Nylander getting trade after July 1st this year...but not for futures. If they can move him and get an impact defender at a similar or lower price point then it may make sense.
I'm not even a huge fan of this deal...but I could see something like this being a benefit to both teams:
Post July 1st..leafs trade Nylander straight up for Pietrangelo (with $1-$2m retained). St. Louis gets nylander for 5 years at an AAV below $7m which is cheaper than re-signing Pietrangelo..who they may let walk anyway. Leafs...prior to executing the trade, negotiate a 5yr extension with Pietrangelo.
So leafs get Pietrangelo for his ages 29-35 who becomes a part of their "core" while getting $1-2.5m in cap savings next year
Blues get Nylander for his ages 23-27 while only needing to pay a salary of $700k next year...and an average of $6m over the final 4 years after that
That's a type of deal I can see Nylander being involved in.
