Description
Hawks have a nice defensive prospects pipeline that should make a big difference in the next few years. Gustafsson having a career year, so they are selling high. But he probably just helps Habs on the power play - reputation is he's not very defensively responsible and eye test shows the same. A guy like this can fill an existing gap for Montreal, until younger prospects grow into NHL minutes. Maybe we get lucky and he bonds with Weber, who can cover for Gus's defensive issues.

Sign Poehling after NCAA season to get into his first few NHL games and see what he's up against next fall

Détails additionnels:
The Hawks have a glut of good young defensemen on the way (Boqvist, Jokiharhu, Mitchell, Beaudin, Krys etc.) and not enough roster spots to go around next few years

CHI fans believe he's worth a late first rounder - these two combined picks (let's say #50 and #110) are equal value to a late 1st

In this year's draft, a second and a 4th round pick are going to be bottom six players maybe some top 9 max. Any other year fine. But the draft this year is weaker then usual

Ok...

1) a 2nd and a 4th doesn't get you a late 1st and even then Gus is not worth a late 1st. 1 flash in the pan season won't get him a 1st. See every trade made like this using the trade tracker. you won't find one. Not even moving from 32 to 31 (mainly because it hasn't happenrd before). Moving up in the draft really depends on the position you moving to. Example look at the Ott-NJ trade in 2017 i believe it was. Moving from 12th to 11th cost an additional 3rd rounder.......

And 2)

Weak draft year? Every year the pundits say this year is great and this year is weak and yet they say this only using one simple equation. Is the draft top heavy? and is the 20-40 range ambiguous? That's it. There is no such thing as a weak or good draft. Half the good players in a draft come from rounds 2-7 years later anyway. When they say weak it just means the top 2-3 picks are not franchise players and that the players available in later half of the 1st round will be pretty much set in stone for the teams picking in that range. That's it. Doesn't mean those players aren't good, just means the top 30 players in the draft are pretty ambiguously agreed upon.

The idea that a mid-2nd and mid-4th combined is about equal in projected future value to a single pick in the 25-30 range of the first round comes from the Sean Tierney and Michael Schuckers data @ChartingHockey . That's where I was coming from on that. I agree with you on the weak draft vs. strong draft idea. Extremely difficult to tell how guys will develop in their mid-20's there are gems hidden in every draft in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounds.

What do you think Gustafsson is worth ? Would he be worth a shot for Montreal at modest cost or should the Habs just keep to a strategy of slow and steady, drafting lots of bodies and developing?

Beyond top 10 I think it's really tough to say weak draft versus strong draft. Lots of gems hidden in every draft, just gotta find and develop them properly.
