Yes I think that was the case until this year, now we just saw NSH give Johanssen 24yr old an 8yr 8M contract.
The problem with the bridge deals like Kane and Toews took is that next contract is huge and players will enter their decline, in the Leafs case, if all 3 Nylander/Marner and Matthews sign a 6yr contract, then for sure next one won't be able to keep them all, and they would be FA with possibility to lose them all if they chose to.
If you sign them 8yr you ensure their prime years at high but more manageable cap (if cap rises even better), then Nylander and Marner would be 29yrs old last year of their deal, Matthews 28yrs old. If in those 8 years Leafs don't have a cup maybe is time to get rid of some or them all if you get a nice return to start another rebuild.</div></div>

Only 1 of these guys got these deals straight from ELC, Tarasenko. He also had just had a season with 73 points. I see this as Nylanders high end for points next year, more likely in the 65 point range.

Comparing him to F.Forsberg (.723 ppg) Scheifele (.741 ppg) and Monahan (.68 ppg) his career .718 looks pretty similar. They signed for an average of 7 years and 6,172,619 million.
Assuming the Leafs do plan on moving him over to C at some point, he is between Monahan and Scheifele who both signed recent contracts and are about the same age. They signed for an average of 7.5 years and 6.25 million.

Basically what im saying is, I think we can get him to around the same as Scheifele or Monahan or Forsberg. 6-8 years, 6-6.5 million. My preference is giving him 8 years and 6.5 million.
