MNM contracts
Eichel just signed for 8 x $10m. The Leafs would be ecstatic to get Matthews at $11m. The market for Marner/Nylander was set by Pasternak, who signed at 6 x $6.7m. So much depends upon their stats this year and next but I think $6.8 and $7.0 is conservative.
What it shows is the Leafs are going to have to rely on ELC s and a few bargain contracts to get by once the big 3 are signed. I threw in Doughty but it could have easily been Gardiner at $7m per. Once they fill that whole there's not a lot left to pay for depth players. Bye-bye JVR.

Thoughts?
Hey Paknation, Edmonton's deep at centre. They can't afford to lose cost-controlled Nurse for one year of Bozak and a B prospect.
Reilly plays left side along with Gardiner so the Leafs don't really need another top four left defense anyway. Hainsey plays the right side.

Marlies roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>allendeunico</b></div><div>For what I read it seems Liljegren will play with Marlies as his team in sweden,Rogle, almost got relegated last year, and relaationship with Rogle is not very straight forward...playing here Leafs can control how he is used on ice,how he eats, trains etc etc. To start season will be protected on third pair, the guy has to get used to smaller rink, and take the steps from there.
Doing this you can see there is imbalance LW, exactly opposite as Leaf roster, someone has to crack it and take JVR spot when he is gone, the most seasoned are Johnsson and Rychel (and Leivo who I think leafs will give the chance to take that spot). I think Kapanen and Shosh will start with Marlies just because they can be called up and get back down without going through waivers. Kapanen is 20, some patience, next year there are openings and more seasoning won't hurt, why trade him away now.
The Marlies D actually is quite full, looks much much better than years ago, I think one of the 4 Lefties goes up, then Valiev, Rosen and Borgman all can play right side...many options.
Babs and Lou said the club needed depth, look at it now, the turnaround they had made in 2 years is amazing.
Leafs can afford to keep JVR/Bpzak/Komarov for this year run and lose them in FA no problem, there are kids coming and have draft picks to keep filling the pool.</div></div>
Agree with all of that. I imagine Dermott is the guy pencilled into a LD spot. The depth is now emerging at every position. Really quite an impressive turn-around. I agree they may very well let all of JVR/Bozak/Komarov play out their contracts. In the meantime if a young player steps up quicker than anticipated any of the three can be quickly moved. The young guys ought to be motivated.

I think Kapanen will be with the Leafs. Rychel will not clear waivers, so he'll be with the Leafs or gone. Rosen will probably play the right side. Liljegren will go back to Sweden. Gauthier is injured. That's basically the team. They should be very competitive.</div></div>
My question to you "thisguygm", is if the Leafs were looking to send Liljegren back to Sweden, why would they enter into his entry level contract now? Leafs (once Brown signed) are fully maxed out on contracts (50), and if that was the plan why not delay his signing by a year? I like the idea of moving Rosen to the right side for depth and leaving him there!</div></div>
I'm speculating, just like everyone else, but when they asked him at the draft he didn't say "I'll play wherever theya want me to", he said he'd be returning to Sweden for at least one more year. He's an 18 year old kid. Swedes like developing over there. He fell awrfully far in the draft. I think he has something to prove over there. He's at least 2 years away from a full time NHL role. Why not let him show what he can really do over there and then bring him to the AHL. I would argue he'll have more room to develop his skill on the larger ice. The NHL contract is something earned. His performance at the development camp and the way he's presented him they're showing him he's part of the future. The 50 SPC limit is another matter. They shouldn't have signed 3 career AHLers to contracts if they were concerned about that. There are moves coming. Maybe minor or maybe significant.

Shattenkirk!
Shattenkirk because he's a free wallet. Third in STL maybe but he would be top 2 in Toronto . He's 11th in points for defensemen over the last 5 years and very much in his prime. The numbers show he is a good all-round top 4, not just a PP specialist. The Leafs need to bolster their top 4 and this is the way to do it immediately and without giving up assets. I won't be surprised if he signs with an American club, though he did say he was open to joining the Leafs. Regardless, expect the Leafs to be bidders.
Smith may go for more, yes. I included him mainly because the Leafs will have financial flexibility to upgrade on Hunwick/Marincin in that spot and they've been linked to him in the past. Ideally it would not be Smith in that spot, it would be someone more physical who can kill penalies and close out games. I'm not sure who that would be at this point. Someone like Karl Alzer will probably be too expensive.
I'm surprised to say this but with another top 4 dman this team could be in contention in very short order if their young players can stay on the same trajectory. It might be time to shell out.

Yeah, they have a chance to take another step next season without compromising their future by upgrading the D and backup goalie. You make a good point re:free agents. The ones to be concerned about are Nylander next summer and Marner/Matthews the summer after. Luckily forwards JVR, Bozak, Komarov and Lupul are all coming off the books and there are plenty of affordable replacements 'in the system'. Even so, signing Shattenkirk may mean letting Gardiner walk in a couple of years but I think they will have defense prospects by that point to replace him. Perhaps whoever they draft with this year's first rounder, or Dermott or Neilsen.

It is Still Possible
Exactly, Juice. Here are the qualifying offer amounts for the Leafs RFAs. I don't see how any of them but Corrado, C Carrick, Marincin and Holland should get much more than the QO:
Harrington 575000
S. Carrick 600000
Smith 575000
Corrado 632500
C. Carrick 575000
Sparks 600000
Marincin 700000
Holland 775000
Leivo 750000
Percy 832500
I'll make these changes but it doesn't affect the overall picture.

Are you comparing Sam Carrick and Josh Leivo to McDavid? No one is going to offer sheet either player. They are fringe players lucky to get a contract. I don't even have Carrick on the roster. Ok Leivo could be signed at $1M, they can still demote him until Horton goes on LTIR. The point is with a few moves they can finesse the roster to squeeze under the cap to open the season.

If Hunwick is claimed I say "so long!" He is our 7th defenseman IMO. Leivo, C Carrick and Corrado are RFAs without arbitration rights. What young goalies, Sparks? Bibeau? They are not NHL talent. Leafs can be patient to find their next goalie. Enroth can hold the fort for the time being... This shows they do have the cap space... Did you read the description?!?

I don't entirely disagree with you there. Hellebuyck may be off limits.
I still think a swap involving Trouba and JVR makes some sense for both sides, much the same way Seth Jones for Ryan Johansen made sense. The Leafs might have to wait a bit and see how the threat of the expansion draft shakes up the goalie market.

@palhal
Check your facts. Michalek can provide a 10 team no trade list. He can be moved to 19 other teams without his consent. Lupul is, for all intents, done in Toronto. If he wants to continue his career (he may not) he will have to accept a trade. He has a 14 team trade list, meaning he can be traded. He has spent zero days on the LTIR this season. He is on the IR, which does not provide cap relief. Yes, he could be exposed in the expansion draft but I get the feeling the team wants him gone asap. If he can be traded for someone who qualifies for LTIR relief that gives us that much more cap space to swing deals, like the Winnik trade last month where we leverage our cap space for draft picks and prospects.
Right now, including prospects, the Leafs have exactly two right handed defensemen, Carrick and Corrado. Zaitsev would make three but that is hardly sufficient organizational depth at that position. Trouba would slot into the depth chart ahead of Corrado and Carrick.
I don't understand what you are saying about the goalies.

Trouba's coming off a poor season and his contract demands are excessive. Winnipeg has Hutchinson in net and Comrie in the minors. JVR is the best player in this trade. Winnipeg needs a LW. It could happen.

Zaitsev will get performance bonuses. Corrado, Marincin, Carrick, etc have no leverage and should be resigned for less than $1M.

These moves would give them about $8M in cap space after placing Horton on LTIR that they can use to trade for a top 4 RH defense and goalie of the future during the season from teams pinched by the expansion draft. Bozak or Holland could be traded at the deadline to make room for Marner in 2017-18.

Good points all. Stamkos or no I think tge team will flex its financial muscle. Wasn't aware Michalek was assured of no buy out. I would look to move him, perhaps retain salary. Would keep Laich over Michalek. Looks like a spent force to me. Helm has more jam and is a Babcock guy. Might get more $/term but I'm anticipation a July 1st like last year's. Eriksson would appeal to mentor Nylander. Point taken regarding term. I think he might be a good fit but not for more than 4 yrs term. Schenn or Polak would provide depth on RH defense and could be exposed in the expansion draft. I've never heard that buyouts are capped at 3. Anyone else confirm? Whats the limit on aitsev's contract?
