Cup Contenders
Dude, you can't just expect every team in the league to help retain salary on your players.
That's not enough for Kane, they'll probably want a prospect like Cuylle over Gauth. Also, no way you get Arizona to retain 2.6M for just a 5th, even if it's just for one year.
That absolutely doesn't get you Wheeler, not to mention 4M retained for two years. Nor is that enough to get Ari to retain.
Finally, why? Why would we waste that many picks and Kravtsov to get two former franchise players in their mid to late 30s? I mean Kane I can kinda see, he still puts up points despite his defensive game being.. well lets not speak of that. But Wheeler? Why do you think we need him as well? Neither of them offer much when it comes to defense, and neither are the play drivers they used to be offensively. At this point, they're not what we need, and they'd cost a lot more than we're willing to pay. We can't waste almost every pick for the next 3 years to pay for two rentals when we don't actually need either of them.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jimbo1119</b></div><div>Rydahl for sure has shown that he belongs here- but they don't lose him if he gets cut...and while I think either him or Carpenter makes the team, I think they do want to keep both in the org- which would require Rydahl to start in Hartford.
Regarding Vesey- he has shown that he is reinventing himself...so if it's him OR Gautier, the decision becomes whether they want to take a 29 yo in the middle of transforming his NHL role, or a 25 yo who shows flashes of mojo- yet (for whatever reason) just can't net the puck...and as a result, has trouble sticking in the lineup. But (when given ice time) Gaut plays he does get chances, does hustle back to break up plays, and does draw penalties. Gaut along Rydahl might just be 2/3 of a 4th line capable of keeping the opponent on their heels while keeping the puck in the O zone...even if they don't score!
The frustrating thing...with so many decent players on the bubble- there are 3 players who are locks for the roster, yet haven't shown much yet. Other than the pregame pep talk, I've yet to see what Reaves brings...the deterrent factor is an absolute fallacy. Blais is coming off a tough injury- so have to cut him slack...but I don't see him as a long term top 6 option. Yet to somehow justify the Buch trade, he is going nowhere. Finally Goodrow on other than 4th line is a liability. He is a warrior, but the team is insistent on believing he is a "swiss army knife" option like J. Fast. Unfortunately the only thing he truly is good at is eating CAP space!</div></div>
Rydahl doesn't necessarily have to start in Hartford, as long as two of Reaves, Gauth, and Hunt are sent down. I don't see any of them getting claimed and most don't really have a spot on the team anyway, so why not just keep Rydahl and Carpenter, plus one of those three? This is the same argument Drury used last season to justify sending Kravtsov to Hartford in order to protect Hajek. Just keep the players who give you the best chance of winning on the team.
I def agree with you on Reaves, I like him but he's just not good for the team. I think Blais still has time, but I do see him as more of a 3rd or 4th line option who can provide some offense and good forechecking. Blais, on paper, fits the mentality GG seems to want for the bottom 6, but he really has to prove that this year. I think he's one of the likeliest players to get traded at the deadline. Goodrow's contract and the positions he's been played in has definitely hurt his reputation. He is genuinely a good bottom 6 player, he proved that in Tampa by winning two straight cups, but he needs to be used correctly. That contract sucks, but that doesn't mean he's actively hurting the team while on the ice.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jimbo1119</b></div><div>With Gautier and Hunt getting cut here, I doubt either makes it through waivers. Going into the season w/ (2) big unknowns- Blais and Krav- I think NYR will take the path of exposing the fewest players- so Rydahl (even though he's been good) will start in Hartford. That leaves 1 of Carpenter, Gautier, Reaves, Vesey, or Hunt to face waivers. I would waive Reaves- least likely to be plucked and least productive of the group- but I know NYR will not do that. My guess is Vesey is the player cut. 4th line will then be Goodrow centering Hunt, with Gautier and Reaves splitting time on the right. Carpenter hanging around as a depth C.
If a trade can be made- that obviously changes things...but most teams are in a similar situation- and why trade assets for guys who may appear on the waiver wire?
Then fast forward 10-15 games in: if either Blais or Krav (or both) not cutting the mustard at 1 and 2RW, then there will be some movement, which will open up spots on 3rd and/or 4th line. This could be where Rydahl really gets his chance.</div></div>
Eh, I get your point about protecting players, but I feel like it's really impossible at this point to ignore Rydahl and Vesey. They've both excelled in camp and I can't really see them getting sent down.
There's no doubt in my mind Gauthier and Hunt get sent down, they're just not worth protecting at this point. Hunt is alright as a 13th or 14th forward, but I don't see him getting claimed and Gauthier is a pretty one (or even none) dimensional player who I don't see earning a roster spot.
Kravtsov is an unknown quantity, but his connection with Panarin, play in the KHL, and overall potential to be a genuine top 6 option means he projects to start the season alongside Panarin and Trocheck.
GG does seem to want to keep the kid line together, which is why someone like Blais might end up on the 1st line, which is interesting, but if it was my call I'd put Laffy on the 1st line, with Vesey, who has been very impressive, with Chytil and Kakko on the 3rd line. Vesey is a downgrade from Laffy but should be good enough, plus Blais is still an option, and Othmann seems to be quite NHL-ready, so a call-up isn't out of the question for him either.
The 4th line is quite obvious for me. Rydahl is no question the best 4C option. While he isn't quite as good in a shutdown role as Carpenter, he brings a lot more offense and forechecking, which is exactly what Gallant wants from that 4th line. He fits with guys like Goodrow, Hunt, and Blais a lot more than Carpenter does, and while Carpenter did play for GG in Vegas, I'd say Rydahl is absolutely suitable for the system.
Starting the season with Goodrow - Rydahl - Blais seems like the best option right now, unless Gallant wants to either protect Hunt or Gauthier, or run a 22 man roster, in which Rydahl would get sent down, but if Vesey, who's probably the least sure player, struggles I could see Blais slotting in on that 3rd line with Carpenter on the 4th.

still think its an open race for that 3 LD spot for Jones & Hajek but both probably make the club out of camp.
I think Othman is going back to Flint (OHL) ....Maybe he sticks around early for the 9 games before his ELC loses its slide option .... but ultimately the kid needs to play top line minutes at just 19, for his longer term development.</div></div>
honestly, Rydahl looks more probable for the 4C spot than Carpenter atm

That doesn't even get you Keller, not to mention the RS. You're not getting both of those guys without paying 1/2 of Kappo, Kravtsov, or Laffy, lets just get that straight.
The worst part of this tho is that you think Arizona would trade their best young forward who they recently signed to an 8 year, 7M contract, WHILE RETAINING 3M for 6 YEARS.
Colorado aren't taking on Goodrows contract, not with that MacKinnon extension coming up and Byram/Newhook needing new deals.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Blackwood - No one doubts his talent. The skills are there to be a good, regular starter in NHL (maybe even top-10 starter). His maturity level is what holds him back. He came into last season unprepared. He covered up an injury that cost us games, and eventually costed us Wedgement to waivers as we kept MackBlack on roster when he should have been on IR….and thus ended up in GM’s doghouse. All probably correctable things, but we will know this year.
Roster / Lines - Siegenthaler will likely get top-pair minutes (won’t be a scratch). Bratt and Hughes are normally split up. Haula probably goes to 3C, Mercer to 1RW. And if we had signed Gaudreau, we would not have signed Palat.
Gaudreau - Hughes - Mercer
Sharangovich - Hischier - Bratt
Holtz - Haula - Zetterlund
Wood - McLeod - Bastian
Siegenthaler - Severson
Graves - Hamilton
Walsh/Okhotiuk - Marino
Blackwood
Vanecek
Bench: Johnsson, Tatar, Smith</div></div>
I put Smith in the roster of Siegenthaler because he's better on the PK, and better as a 3rd pairing dman. The lack of defense first guys on the team is most likely a significant reason your goalies are drowning.
Holtz gets top 6 minutes over Sharangovich imo and Bratt and Zetterlund are both left wings afaik.
Also isn't Nemec basically confirmed to be on the roster?
I'd counter with this:
Gaudreau - Hughes - Mercer
Bratt - Hischier - Holtz
Zetterlund - Haula - Sharangovich
Wood - McLeod - Bastian
Graves - Hamilton
Marino - Severson
Siegenthaler - Nemec
Blackwood
Vanacek
Bench: Johnsson, Tatar, Smith

Blackwood does have a higher ceiling and I feel like he could get back there depending on how well the defense works in front of him. Marino is a nice addition but the overall team needs better defensive structure, part of that may be coaching. It's a hard environment for a goalie to thrive in, but if they can resolve some of those issues, Blackwood and Vanacek can certainly be a solid tandem. Maybe it'll be a 1A1B type situation, but it's probably better for the Devils if Blackwood becomes the clear starter, cause it'll mean that he's returned to his early career form.

I can, Chychrun scored at a 26 goal pace 2 seasons ago on the Coyotes and despite coming off a bit of a down year is still absolutely young enough to bounce back. If he does, he's a top 10 dman in the league and the missing piece to the dcore, if he doesn't then he's still a solid option to shore up the top 4. Teams aren't biting because they don't want to overpay when they are taking a gamble on whether or not he'll adapt. He struggled to produce on a GOOD Rangers team as a puck mover. Teams aren't willing to pay for "what CAN be", when he's already been tested on NA ice. Good european defenseman are normally a gamble in this sense, anyway.
In terms of value and where they have come from, Nils and Egor are not very far off.</div></div>
1 season in NA is not him having "been tested on NA ice"
even American prospects often struggle in their first NHL/AHL seasons.
also, you said "teams aren't willing to pay for "what CAN be"", which is partly objectively not true. teams are absolutely willing to pay for projected top 4 RHD's.
yes, his trade stock has dropped, which is why trading him is unbelievably stupid from the Rangers perspective, especially for another even more unproven prospect who's barely produced the same p/gp on the AHL level as a forward as Lundkvist has as a defenseman. by your own flawed analysis, the Rangers would be muuuch better off just keeping him if this is the best return they'd get...

first of all, super funny that you deleted the girard for dvorak post. can't stand the heat huh?
this does explain a lot tho, you clearly know very little of this sport.
lundKVIST put up 31 pts in 45 games in the SHL as a 19 year old, then 32 pts in 52 games, including 14 goals which was the most of any defenseman, and he won the Salming trophy as the best defenseman. those are good numbers in a mens league that is arguably higher caliber than the AHL
europeans, especially defenseman, often struggle to adapt to North America, with the smaller ice rinks, so it's pretty natural that he'd struggle with the step to the NHL. he still has tons of talent and is still projected as a future top 4 puck-moving dman.

Projected Starting Line Up
gosh this is so far from the projected lineup, let's compare notes:
Bertuzzi - Larkin - Raymond
Vrana - Copp - Perron
Kubalik - Suter - Zadina
Erne - Rasmussen - Sundqvist
Chiarot - Seider
Edvinsson - Hronek
Maatta - Lindstrom
Smith, Oesterle
IR: Fabbri, Pysyk, Walman (all out for at least the first few weeks of the season)
There is a chance Berggren or even Söderblom makes the team, if either do they'd slot in on the left wing of the 3rd line, moving Kubalik to the 4th, either shifting Erne to the RW and Rasmussen out of the lineup, or just making Erne a scratch.
The main problem you're having is you're too attached to the listed positions. Copp is listed as a LW, but is good on faceoffs and has a lot of experience at center, which is what we signed him for. He'd be a major upgrade at 2C from Suter. The way you formatted the lineup put guys like Raymond and Bertuzzi on the 3rd line, when in reality they're the best options for the first line wings. Do you really think Raymond is worse than Zadina? Also, you forgot that Edvinsson is almost guaranteed to make the lineup

I don't even wanna talk about you comparing Clarke to Quinn Hughes. I mean I'm a fan of Arvidsson, but there is no way the Canucks would even consider trading Hughes, a top dman in the league 1 for 1 for Arvidsson, a middle 6 winger.
Boeser for Clarke is a muuch more realistic trade value-wise, given Boeser is a young, promising 1st line goal scorer and Clarke is still a prospect, and even that won't happen cause Boeser doesn't fit in the Kings roster and Clark is an essential prospect.
TL;DR the original trade is stupid, but your comparison is just in a different league

Stylistically Kaut would be a nice fit for their bottom 6, as he plays the same way a few of their other forwards do. Heavy on the boards, but having skill to finish and pass. So yeah I think this trade would be decent for both sides.
Fwiw I could also see the Avs taking a flyer on Gauthier if he's waiver or available by trade. He's a bit one dimensional offensively but that was said about Nichushkin too (actually JG's move to cut to the net is pretty similar to Nichushkin's), but Nuke is a lot better off the puck.</div></div>
Um the hype around Kravtsov atm has very little to do with his draft position, all the drama with Drury definitely wore out the "top 10 pick shine." In his first 20 games, while he had some troubles adapting to the game, he didn't look too out of place playing big minutes with the Rangers, and showed some pretty great talent. Then, after having a bit of an argument with Drury, he went back to Russia where he put up pretty great numbers, especially in the playoffs.
You talk of draft spots, but simply put Kravtsov is a higher caliber prospect. I've been a Kaut believer for years now, I liked him when he was drafted, I like his gritty style of play and his skating, he has some tools that would indicate he could take a roster spot this year, maybe there's even top 6 upside there. But Kravtsov is someone who could potentially jump into the Rangers top 6 out of camp, someone who should already be penciled into a roster spot, and he has a ton of potential that I just don't see as much with Kaut.
Also, with the Avs, they already have Rantanen, Nichuskin, Lekhonen, and prospects like Olausson and of course Kaut, so there really isn't that much need for someone like Kravtsov. I feel like there's a lot more need for someone like Kaut in the Avs system.
