Your trade proposed isn’t bad but doesn’t really help our cap. Which would be the only reason to move any players.
My question is if MacArthur or gaborik are taken off ltir and added to Ir are their salaries still covered insurance wise. My idea would be to move zaitsev with a 2nd for MacArthur and gaborik and demelo. If you needed a prospect too I would be willing to move anyone besides Lilly sandin and Bracco.
I’m still not convinced that zaitsev is the right player to move. Night in and night out he has been proving how consistently he can shut down top lines.

I think Ottawa would take Zaitsev because they have more than enough cap space but the incentive would have to be right.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RangerWall92</b></div><div>So how could I fix this trade then?</div></div>
I like your Demelo angle that would be a savvy move by Dubas so I doubt it happens lol. To dump Zaitsev and get Demelo, Kapenen or Johnsson would have to be involved and maybe a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

The leafs make drastic much needed change
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dzad96</b></div><div>Agreed the contract isn't that bad, just given this teams cap structure I don't think they can afford to have a 60 point winger on a 7 mil contract when you can have guys like Kap and Johnson, 50 point guys making 4-5. that Nylander money would be better spent on D given that Leafs are going to have over 30 mil tied up in three forwards once Marner signs.</div></div>
i think they will be able to wait one season for marleau and zaitsev to expire then when the cap goes up that will give them around 13 million in space to make sure everyone is signed. i dont think kapanen is really a 4-5 million dollar player, he hasnt been producing lately and his points went up from a high shooting percentage and playing with matthews. im not sure about johnsson though, he is very good but his style of game will ware down his body. he is so good but long term he wont last the way he plays physically and in the corners. I imagine he will take a bit of a discount for something in the low threes but who knows.
the winger depth isnt great without nylander. bracco looks good but the leafs strength is their forwards and they should almost never take away from your strengths to address their weaknesses because it will be for just one season. the season after will have a top 6 of rielly, dermott, sandin who looks insane in the ahl, rosen, liljegren and there are others to be the 6th d like borgman, duszak, rasanen or gordeev if they turn out and there will be cap space to sign someone else

Arizona Coyotes signed Nick Schmaltz (7 Years / $5,850,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Brian2016</b></div><div>I don't get it at all. Schmaltz doesn't have a ton of leverage here and he still got big money. His offensive numbers were likely inflated from playing alongside Kane in CHI. I'd much rather have Drouin at $5.5M and Larkin is only $250k higher at $6.1M AAV and he's far superior. I thought Schmaltz would sign for around $4.5M AAV on a six year deal. This is an overpay, in my opinion. Does ARI really see him as a potential #1 Center scoring 70+ points on a regular basis? I don't.
Just for the recored, Nylander received about $1.5M AAV more than he should've too. But that was a unique experience. ARI isn't on the clock here. They could've held out.</div></div>
Just for the record, Nylander was not overpaid by 1.5 million. It was 500k at the absolute most, and his underlying numbers show him playing up to that tiny overpay already, just being down on luck. Stop perpetuating this myth

Karlsson and Co
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeastModeUnknown</b></div><div>couple problems. Blues are working on extending Schenn, and with how blues are playing I don't see him leaving. Cap is 83 Million not 86M. You also have to give up a first to get rid of Zaitsev. He is a liability for a team.</div></div>
On top of that, you signed Karlsson to 8 years which insinuates he was traded before free agency. If that was the case it would have to be a sign and trade and you would most certainly be needing to probably send a package of Nylander/ Dermott and a high pick back San Jose way.

Only San Jose has rights to an 8 Year Deal. He has 7 Year deal as max for a new team. Because the Leafs don't have the rights to Karlsson.

TB loses that trade. Parayko and Thomas are good assets, but so are Miller, and Point is a superstar, arguably a TOP10 C in the NHL.

Rielly will be top 10 in Norris Voting this year .... and there's a very good chance he gets a top 3 nomination.
There are 31 #1 defense in the league .... he's one of the youngest and one of the best.
I'll leave you with the math.

It would have to be Hanifin, not Brodie. Brodie is too old. Since CGY already has Valimaki and Kylington they should be alright on the left side.

I don't think the trade idea helps the Leafs at all very much. I understand it's mainly for cap relief, but I think there are better ways to split up Brown and Zaitsev in separate deals and get better value while still focusing on the cap relief aspect.
As for the signings, I don't think they're far off for the most part. I agreee with Johnsson getting more years than Kapanen, cause he just took a 1 year deal and will be looking for more long term security on his end. Kapanen screams a bridge deal to me and I'm honestly not scared of any offer sheets coming his way. I think $4M is a bit overpriced for him though, don't see him going higher than $3.25M max on a 2 year deal. He's only played 1 season in the league, $4M is a pretty big chunk of change for that. As for Marner, I doubt he goes the full 8 years. It'll be too high of a AAV for the Leafs to handle. That's when he gets over Matthews $11.634M per year. I think it'll either be a 6 year $10.5M per year deal, or a shorter 3 year bridge deal. Both of those make more sense to help the cap situation until more space frees up.
I recently made an ACGM myself with similar moves to upgrade the D and got a little creative with a Zaitsev move but still made it work with the cap. It's tricky, but there's gonna be some hard decisions to make soon for Dubas and company. Check out mine and let me know what you think:

1 reason i think Marleau will be moved is his contract was very front loaded. So any team that has cap space can take on his 6 mil cap hit, but really they would only be paying him a mil for his last year. Not a bad player for a million dollars.
