<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rktkt66</b></div><div>QFT - and I just don't see Adams being interested in adding him as a rental. We have to expect that if he does add a veteran to support Levi (in lieu of expecting UPL/Comrie to do so), he probably will want someone that can remain as the backup once Levi's play confirms what Adams and most expect. Hellebuyck as a rental only means the Sabres will ship him off and be in the market again next summer for a reliable backup.

Too many fans always downplay such a search as if there are always a plethora of options to choose from - which may be true if aging, injury-prone or minor leaguers are included. Finding a reliable backup that doesn't have to be overpaid and will accept being the backup with less playing time is harder every year, it seems. None of the free agent options this summer are confidence-inspiring - so it doesn't surprise me to read some suggestions that Adams will look via trade route. Even though Hellebuyck is the most talented goalie reportedly available in a trade, the rental/extension scenario isn't a fit. I would expect Adams and his staff to instead explore what Gibson's situation/asking price is - especially if Anaheim is willing to deal him in favor of a younger UPL or Comrie. He'd at least be around for 4 years albeit at overpriced cap hit unless Ducks would retain.

Maybe it's the kind of under the radar possibility that Adams always seems to end up with but it's surprising that there isn't more speculation - or fan theories - around Buffalo trading for Vejmelka. He's cheap, still young enough to stick around another 4-5 years but experienced with 100+ games as a starter and on a team in a serious rebuild with no stability organizationally of where they'll play in 2 years. He seems like a perfect option for the Sabres to add where he won't block or threaten Levi's ascension and yet still handle playing in an offensive-based system and the shot volume it results in.</div></div>

This is an internet message board for fans, which I can appreciate, but from what I've seen from Anaheim fans, they want a hellebuyck/saros return for Gibson, which is absurd to me. I've seen a few of their fans make the argument that it's the team in front of Gibson that's the problem, although I'm not sure that the numbers back that idea. Whether Gibson is retained or not, he would have to be cheap, at least for me. Vejmelka would be interesting here, I would be fine with that.
I think the important thing, for me at least, is to recognize that we have a problem defensively. We relied on outscoring teams last year, but our defense and our pk left us hung out to dry. If it was up to me, I would add a couple decent physical defensive d, to make our zone a less comfortable place for the other teams forwards to play, and a defensive center- neither Thompson nor cozens (I was surprised he wasn't better in his own end) were good defensively, a center to help with d zone starts to help on the pk and win a draw- might help. Following the point all the way through, what we know about Gibson and vejmelka, is that they have played for flawed teams and were not able to put up superhuman numbers on their own, it's not reasonable to expect that the results here would be different if changes aren't made to a few of the skaters in front of the goalie.
