Buffalo Sabres signed Mattias Samuelsson (7 Years / $4,285,714 AAV)
It's a bad deal. It can become an okay deal. It doesn't change that they would have gotten the same deal next year even if he would have a great 22-23 season... no point of making this deal

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ElectroMan</b></div><div>That's the thing. I never said "bonafide" you just keep repeating it. You just misrepresent arguments instead of addressing what I actually said. I said he played in the top 4 this season and on the top pair with Dahlin at the end. That is true. You said he was on the 3rd pair with Bryson & Fitz all of those minutes. That was completely false. You get caught being wrong & just move on to the next argument. That's acting in bad faith.
If you knew plenty about the player you'd know his ceiling is much higher than a 4th d man lmao. The role that he's already playing in.</div></div>
Do you understand the difference between being "a top 4 Dman" and getting to play a few hundred top 4 minutes (with varying degrees of success, some of those degrees being reeeally bad) on a team with one of the weakest D stables in the league last season? Two very different things, dude. I rode a camel in the Sahara a couple times - doesn't make me a Bedouin. And appropriately, no one should hail me as one because I ain't there yet.

Again, he played 140 minutes with Dahlin out of 715 5v5 minutes. So saying he plays top pair like it's an established thing is extremely misleading.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ElectroMan</b></div><div>"By far, he spent the most time with Casey Fitzgerald (221 min) - that's bottom pairing Next up, Bryson (170 min) - again, 3rd pairing," You're wrong. He wasn't 3rd pairing with Bryson. He was top 4 most of the time. Our team had a lot of injuries defensively. Joki wasn't good with Dahlin and he got much better when he played with Samuelsson. Fitz also played with Samuelsson in the top 4. The only time he really played bottom pair was a bit at the beginning. Hagg was our bottom pair LD for most of the first half.
These were the lineups: https://twitter.com/BuffaloVogl/status/1509904660567633947 Dahlin - Joki / Samuelsson - Fitzgerald / Bryson - Pysyk
https://twitter.com/buffalovogl/status/1501592897229107209?s=21 Dahlin - Joki / Samuelsson - Bryson / Hagg - Fitzgerald
In other words, you gotta look a bit more into it than just looking at natural stat trick</div></div>
Hahaha what? You made claims, I debunked them. Line-ups don't stay the same for 60 minutes every game, and you've picked out exactly one. Isn't it slightly possible you've put the cart before the horse in rating his performance/established place in the line-up and league in general? You act like he's an established top 4 guy who's really almost halfway to being top pairing. That's a wild stretch, on multiple levels.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ElectroMan</b></div><div>I'm not comparing Pelech to Samuelsson. One was 27 when he got his contract and the other is 22. I'm showing how stupid it is to evaluate a defensive d man by points.
"and acting like everyone who's tugging at their collar over giving a guy like that $30M is a "casual" is being a bit defensive." No, but not knowing anything about the player and giving takes is. If you're looking at point totals for a defensive d man it's very clear the person is clueless when it comes to the player. Just like someone bringing up point totals for Pelech is certainly a casual.
If we gave him a 3 year bridge the cap would be about 95M-100M at the end of that deal. If Samuelsson is still playing on the top pair with good results that would likely be 7M+. This contract could have potentially saved the team 3M per year at that time.</div></div>
Samuelsson being a $7M player in 2026-27 is probably the top 25% of outcomes if we're being generous - not saying that he's a bum, but that I could easily sit here and find 3 guys who flamed out after a good half-season for every defensive Dman you could bring up that wound up being a $7M player by the end of his RFA years.
And to be fair, if you're assuming he bridges at around 3x$2.5M, most of the savings you're talking about in 2026-27 are going to be wiped out by the fact that you're overpaying him by about $2M from 23-24 through 25-26.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ElectroMan</b></div><div>Yea using points to evaluate a defensive d man lmao. Samuelsson isn't a PP QB. At the very least look into the player before commenting.
Man that Pelech stinks making 5.75M with a career high of only 21 points! What were the Islanders thinking!</div></div>
Here's the big difference: Pelech had played in almost as many *playoff games* as Samuelsson has regular-season games when he signed his big extension. He had basically 4 seasons worth of games backing up the analytics that said he was a top-tier, shutdown defenseman.
Samuelsson has half a season showing that, with some pretty bad numbers on the PK(not great for a DFD). It's not saying he can't live up to it, just that it's a huge risk - and acting like everyone who's tugging at their collar over giving a guy like that $30M is a "casual" is being a bit defensive.
My own opinion is that this is a bit premature - he's a defensive defenseman. What could he have done this season that would've put this contract out of reach for the Sabres? Everything in his junior/professional career shows that he's probably a 20-25 point guy at his peak who can shut down another team's top line. Guys like that usually don't get paid much more than Pelech's deal, which is only about $1.5M more than what the Sabres gave Samuelsson. I don't think the Sabres would have cost themselves a more expensive contract extension by waiting to see if he could make the leap this season.

He's not getting only 4M, it's a $30M commitment on a guy with 54 NHL games under his belt!
It's not gutsy, it's plain bad management.
Any first rounder defenceman without stats can now ask for +4M AAV after half a season based on this comparable!?!?

For your info : the buyout cost for him at 25 years old (in 2025) is 700k for 10 years

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pinslack</b></div><div>That's not a usual contract for a forward coming out of his ELC. There's no real comparable if you use CF tool
I really dont mind the contract anyway. The WORST would be a buyout, which has almost 0 consequence for a player under 25 (which is the case for this contract).
I trust, like many, Hughes intelligence.</div></div>
I'm not using the contract comparables tool, but I'd say Charlie Coyle getting $3.2M x 5 in 2014 coming off his ELC after putting up 35 Pts in 82 GP is pretty close to Dach getting $3.3625M x 4 after putting up 26 Pts in 70 GP.

(CGY/FLA) - Tkachuk for Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt
All jokes aside, this trade actually makes sense from a Florida standpoint because it was highly unlikely that they could keep Huberdeau and Weegar after next season, and they receive an elite young power forward locked up on an 8 year deal to play beside Barkov for them. Giving up another 1st and solid prospect isn't the most logical move though.
Calgary of course gets Huberdeau to hopefully try to pick up where Gaudreau left off, and Weegar to solidify their top 4 D core. Plus a first round pick and solid prospect in Schwindt creates a perfect return for the flames. Now only time will tell who wins this trade in the long run once we see what's left of Huberdeau and Weegar for 23-24 for Calgary.

(CGY/FLA) - Tkachuk for Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt
I voted fair deal as I think this makes sense for both teams.
FLA knew that they were not able to keep both Huberdeau and Weegar around, so turning both of them into a 24 year old power forward for the next 8 years is a great investment from them in the long run.
CGY doesn't have to settle on retooling after losing two of their core players, which is instantly a W for them. But they also take a huge gamble here, as both of these guys they've taken are veterans close to their 30s, and they both need to get re-signed, which is bound to get really expensive. Luckily for them both Monahan and Lucic have expiring contracts this year so keeping both of them is in theory very possible, assuming they're not pulling a Gaudreau and walking away from more money than they'd get by staying in Calgary.
Florida's win is that they get the risk free option, CGY could turn out getting more value out of this but they're taking a much bigger gamble here.
