Toronto Maple Leafs signed Auston Matthews (4 Years / $13,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>retro</b></div><div>Am I the only one that thinks Toronto just missed a chance to change the culture?
Instead of sending a message and trading one of the core 4 for assets, they are handing them big contracts. I just don't understand why they believe in this core so much when they simply fail to show up year after year when it matters. They failed at sending a message and changing the culture imo.</div></div>
Couldn't agree more.
Although he can be a game changer, he is the utmost symbol of the toxic culture they choose to maintain in Toronto.
I pity their fans. Years of deception coming forth imo.
And you could see it coming from like, before last year's playoffs...

Leafs will never win a cup with this punk in their lineup.
This signing has "Rebuild in 4 years" written all over it.
Too bad, cause they have decent other players in their lineup wasting their careers and playoff hopes with him.
Should have traded him after his last playoff "performance"

Auston Shmauston.
Leafs are never ever ever gonna go deep in the playoffs with a guy who, yes CAN be a lethal scorer, but is in the end an overpaid unidimensional centerman who is, even at 1,25 pt a game, very FAR from being the league's MVP imo.
Doesn't make his team or linemates any better. Never performed in the playoffs.

Hayton and Geekie are 2 quality (young) Firsts. I think they are more than enough for an underachieving/undereffort type of player. Matthews is not a gamer. He plays the game of hockey

Much appreciated comment <strong>sens65</strong>. Cool to see my hockey-eval seems fair. For once (and urrgg, can't believe I'm writing this), I would really like for the Leafs to win and go as far as they could. But some of their guys' compete level is never at where it should be to give it all to win.
Your Sens are due for some playoff time as well. Sincerely hope they make it next year as they definitely should/could in my view.
*Bring the cup home, someone please!

To get playoff-bound and be set to eventually kick your Leafs' ass. Something we unfortunately will not be able to repeat this season.

Picturing the Roster
I dearly Ottawa doesn't give Turris 4.5M.
I like the player and I think he would be a great (re)fit (2nd-3rd line), 2.5 for 2 would be more than fair.
Sens need to also add a RD.
Why is Artisimov on IR??

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AwesomeMatthews</b></div><div>Montreal couldn't pay him this amount?</div></div>
Montreal did not want to pay him this amount. His play last year wasn't worth that much. Bet you he was asking for 5.5M- 6M+ for 2 as well. Bound to be in TO in 2023 if they can afford to give him 6M+ then...
Now if Montreal can sign JA to, say, 3.9M-5.2M for 4-6 years, I think Montreal definitely wins it. ...Always considering JA averages 25+ goals/year with like 55+ points/year minimally

Same age, same PPG total. Domi put up 72pts just over a year ago; something Mantha has not lived up to yet.
What would you give for Domi on your end?
How would you value Mantha if you were to send him to MTL??

(TOR/PIT) - Kapanen, Åberg, Lindgren for 2020 1st, Rodrigues, Hållander, Warsofsky
My understanding:
1- Pittsburgh gets the better player in this trade; actually the only one worth trading imo. Typically, the team that gets the best player wins the trade.
2- Toronto gets a hypothetical NHL-level player in their 15th pick. Optimistically, let's say a 2nd-liner or a top 2-3 D. NHL-ready in 2022-2023.
3- Toronto loses depth at forward for next season. 35 points VS ??
4- Kapanen did not/should have fetched Toronto something they desperately need: a top-2 RHD.
Bottom line: PIT wins the trade for 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons. After that, who knows...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sala91</b></div><div>I think that Canes should target Barrie from Toronto if he is made available. Carolina needs a top4 rd only this season, until Hamilton is back. He could be cheaper than Petry and the leafs could then use those assets for a more complete dman.</div></div>
That offer should indeed be made to Toronto for Barrie. I believe that would be a fair deal for both parties, even drop the 2nd for a 3rd or 4th.
