So you paid the same amount that Philly paid for KEVEN HAYES to get an at best 3rd pairing Dman, who I assume you are now going to overpay.
And what does this mean for Mete? Be very, very afraid MTL fans.

Edmundson is a solid defenseman. He fits what Montreal likes with his size

We all knew Carolina wasn't bringing him back - so it's a very intelligent move to get whatever they can for him. This makes the MTL blue line a bit of a questionmark next year. Lots of bodies for 6 spots.

Is that a conditional 5th round pick or did Waddell just turn nothing into something?

Meh. This does make it seem like he has a high ask.

Though to be fair, Hayes played to his money this year. Still too long a contract, but it softened the blow considerably.

I agree overall - what the heck is their plan for this blue line??? I think Mete is on the outs.

Edmundson is utter garbage and sub-replacement level. Terrible use of assets.

I never get why teams trade for UFA rights. This gives them more leverage in negotiating and drives up the price due to the risk of them not signing and losing the pick.

Smart move by Bergevin. Edmundson would complete that top 4 nicely

Edmundson is no where near a top 4 defenseman so play him in the top 4 at your own risk

Montreal had like 14 picks at one point.

Any time you're getting something from a guy you've already decided to let go you become an instant winner.

That's besides the point. You will lose leverage in the signing. Look at Kevin Hayes last year who also got a 5th. He signed a 7-year contract worth $7.142M! MTL doesn't have the edge In leverage.

People need to chill with those "Awful asset management" comments ... The team's got a plethora of picks, who cares about a fifth?

Gives Habs another defenseman for the PK, can't have Weber + Petry wasting too many minutes shorthanded (not to mention Edmundson has better SH numbers than any of the Habs D last season over 50 min TOI, also better GA/60 than Slavin and Pesce believe it or not)

Solid 4/5 guy that can kill penalties, play the body, and contribute to the offense once in a while. I like the pickup for Montreal. Let's see what the contract looks like

Don't think it's fair to compare the Hayes trade to this trade. At the end of the day, Montreal paid a 5th round pick for a 4/5 guy, I'll take that anyday of the week.

Per the new CBA, you aren't allowed to add conditions that depend on if you resign a guy or not.

Well it isn't weird that his GA/60 minutes is better than Slavin and Pesce. They played more minutes (like +3 min ES and .5 minutes SH) and vs better competition. Edmundson got 3rd pairing minutes at ES with way worse underlaying stats than any other defenseman on the Canes. Sure, he can play valuable minutes at PK. But he's not going to improve their defense overall and because of this trade, Edmundson got the leverage during the negotiations
