Canucks Opening Night Roster Ottawa amp Colorado Trades
Hey I am a Canucks fan and would love to see these trades happen. I just don't think they're realistic. If Carolina got a 1st to clear one season of Patrick Marleau's contract, you don't think OTT will demand more than a prospect drafted in the 6th round and two 4th round picks to take on three years of Loui? If that is all they had to pay, Benning and all other cap strapped GMs would have done this before the FA period opened. And back to Sutter, I think you are overlooking JT Compher who the Avs appear to have chosen to sign as a cheaper option over Kerfoot. 30pt season and only 24? Probably get him at 3M? Compared to a now 30 year old player coming off an injury riddled season who is good for the same pt total? This is the new NHL. I still think Sutter has value...I certainly hope he does...because his contract or Beagle's is one I think the Canucks have to move (Preferably Beagle given the term). And Tanev, well this administration thinks we are competing for the playoffs this season.

As great as shipping him to the farm team would be, Loui can't be moved down to Utica can he? He's got a NMC not a NTC.

Colorado doesn't have anybody to sign in the next two years? Rantanen, Burakovsky, Zadorov and Compher this year. Girard and Jost the next year. Then Makar and Landeskog in two years. The Avs didn't just lose Barrie they intentionally traded him along with Kerfoot. Moving assets they didn't think they could retain / didn't want to resign for players with term. If the Avs didn't want to pay Kerfoot after a 40 point season, they sure aren't interested in Brandon Sutter. And if they didn't want to lose Barrie for nothing, they aren't going to offer draft picks to risk the same with Tanev. Maybe come playoff time, but by then they'll have Cole back.

Yes! I don't understand why there's not more interest in Lee. I think the Canucks should be all over him. It sounds like the Islanders are playing hard ball with him and he's getting disgruntled. I think he'd be the perfect big body in front of the net compliment for Pettersson and Boeser. That said, there's no way we get him at 5.5.

Boosting Nugent-Hopkins trade value. Who would trade for him?
Plus, the teams that are more likely to fork out for RNH are the ones that need legitimate centers. It's all up to him to continue to demonstrate his improvement in the D zone and face off dot but generate a little more offense. If he does that, in the first half of the season, somebody will come knocking.

Is this a fair trade for Nuge?
Not now, only because RNH is signed for 3 more season after the next one and EDM likely won't have room to resign Ceci. A sign and trade on Ceci would have made sense before Russell was signed.

Fixing Team
Jeff Carter for a 1st and two expiring contracts only one of them being RFA? That's LA's leading scorer last season who's signed for 4 more years after next season at an affordable 5.2 mill. I think for that to happen Carter needs to start partying hard again, dog it the entire season and sleep with a teammate's wife...and even then, I think his point total will be higher than Brown's and Gaborik's. Yes, LA has cap issues but that doesn't mean they're going to accept a rental payment for a signed asset. As for the Avalanche, even if Sakic comes down from his asking price, I still think he's going to want a young Dman who's already NHL ready.

VAN?
Canucks management made it clear this off season they do want some vets around while the kids mature, hence their reluctance to move Edler and Tanev. In which case, if they could move Edler, that would make room for this trade. That said, WSH might be more desperate to move Orpik's cap hit at the deadline and he doesn't have a NMC and only 2 yrs remaining so that might be better. If the Canucks do start accepting some cap dumps for picks/prospects, I'd prefer they keep it to 2-3 years remaining. Then again, I guess it all depends on the payment coming back.

Keeping Everyone
And no Letestu. Yeah, I doubt they get Strome for that. I think as long as RNH is still on the team, he'll be the 3C barring a dramatic improvement in Strome's faceoff percentage. Which leaves Strome riding RW to McDavid or Draisaitl and potentially some career high point totals. I'm also intrigued to see what happens to Nurse and Benning. A three might be the target of some offer sheets. Ugh, that 2 year NMC on Russell...why.

Doesn't Russell also have a full NMC clause? He doesn't have to submit teams until 2019/2020. You can't blame Chiarelli for the contracts on McDavid and Draisaitl. They were going to get paid. But that Russell deal...going to be tough to keep the team together.

Pastrnak
Obviously, a bit of fantasy to clear that Loui deal. And sure, a down year but a great year before that. The change in team and that team being the Canucks likely had a large part in that. Virtanen, like a lot of younger players, couldn't get the time of day with Desjardins. Hopefully going to be a different story under Green and I'm willing to bet on Virtanen turning it around. Like I said, giving away Horvat+ doesn't make sense for the Canucks. Only hope is to take Beleskey, sell the deal as an cap saving measure, and ship a vet and other pieces. Doubt Pastrnak gets dealt anyway. He's just waiting on news from EDM me thinks.

O'Reilly
The O'Reilly trade aside, what does OTT want with Gaborik? They have a deep core of players that are playing within a defensive system. They don't need Gaborik. Even if they need secondary scoring and thought an overpaid over the hill player was the answer, they can't take his term and cap hit. They have to resign Turris, Stone, and Ceci at the end of this off season and Karlsson the year after that. Barring Gaborik turning back the clock and proving himself this season, LA is sending picks not getting them back if they want to clear Gaborik.

Habs and Canucks fans, would you make this trade?
Wow, seeing a lot of Gallagher hate on a few mock trades (not just this one). He had a down season sure, but that was due to injuries. Given a bounce back next year Nucks fans might be back to their usual "Another Vancouver Giant That Got Away" tune. Might help Gallagher's numbers too if MTL could find an actual 1st line center. He's the most proven commodity in this trade imo. I think he has a passion for the game that Vancouver lacks. Also I wouldn't say that Granlund got all 19 goals playing 3rd line. He saw his opportunities alongside Horvat and the twins. That said, as a Nucks fan, I still don't make this trade. I still want to see more from both Granlund and Hutton. Vancouver isn't at a point where they can afford to be moving on from developing players early, certainly not with a number of skilled young wingers that may be able to bring what Gallagher can. Better that the Nucks stay the course and build through the draft.
If the Habs want to do a deal with the Nucks, then look at our veterans and get your draft picks ready. Edler as the puck mover alongside Weber? Maybe a deal that swaps Plekanec and Sutter? MTL gets a cheaper 3C and the Nucks get out from under that contract's term. Both have NTC/NMC's so highly unlikely. Most likely imo is Del Zotto to the Habs at the next trade deadline after he looks like a good puck mover with Tanev anchoring him.

If Washington had Vancouver's summer
I'm surprised the Caps didn't make more of an effort to move Orpik and retain Schmidt. Or even after the draft to move Orpik to make room for Scandella, maybe even retain Alzer (His advanced stats aren't great but that happens when you're on the ice for all the D zone draws). As a Nucks fan, I've liked our off season but I would have liked it even more if we went full rebuild. Those FA's we got can be moved later, yes, but we could have taken on some cap dumps for picks and flipped those later too. Management is hesitant to fully turn things over to the kids and Orpik would have been a good veteran guy to make either Edler (if he would waive his NTC) and/or Tanev (pre NTC) easier to move on from. But oh well, what could have been for both squads.

You're right. The deal would have to be retooled if RNH was included. I certainly wouldn't mind it either especially once Henrik is gone. But I suspect EDM will have suitors outside of the Pacific division once they're ready to move him.

Should still trade Tanev...
Eriksson SHOULD play with Horvat. Not because Baertschi doesn't deserve 1st/2nd line time, but because Loui's contract pretty much demands that the Canucks deploy him as if he's worth the 6M. He's unmovable as it stands now. Best case scenario he plays his way onto the radar of some contenders but even then, given that he waives his NMC...what are the Canucks going to do, retain how much on his 5 years remaining? Alternatively, if he's going to stay (the contract is also buyout proof), it may was well be with Horvat (and ideally with another big RW) who can make room for him. Watching him and the Sedins move the puck along the perimeter with no hope of getting to the net just isn't entertaining. My changes to deployment would be to move either Sutter or Gagner to the Sedin's RW, to give Henrik a more seasoned center to cover him in the defensive zone. At this stage in his career, he needs the Pavelski treatment that Thorton is getting in San Jose. Same deal, maybe the Sedins make one of them look like intriguing deadline trade bait and we get some picks and prospects.

Why I think they have a better Cup chance this season
That's an awful big payout for Grubauer, especially for a rebuilding team that needs all the draft picks they can get. The market isn't great for goalies right now and granted, Grubauer has been a steady backup that hasn't stumbled like some of the other options out there currently, VAN won't pay if this is the price. Grubauer might be an entry way to facilitating something else, like an Orpik cap dump perhaps? Orlov might also consider playing in Russia if you do him like that.

I think you misread. Pengwinzer was claiming Sheary can't be retained because of Hagelin and Hornqvist. I was suggesting Hornqvist could be a bad contract that gets packaged to the Canucks given that he's the type of big sandpaper RW the Sedins need. Maybe the Canucks get pick(s) because they're wise to the cap dump. Maybe they even pay up because they believe they can also win now (like the Sutter/Bonino trade). Just a matter of the NTC.

Roman Polak eh? I don't know. I kind of feel like the Pens exposed him as a pylon when he was a part of the Sharks cup run. Grigorenko definitely worth a look on another team though. Don't worry about Bonino, just keep an eye out for the next 3rd line center bargain (1.9M cap hit, what were the Canucks thinking?). He wants that Brandon Sutter money which is why it's best to let him walk. Actually, Hornqvist to the Canucks might make some sense. A big RW for the Sedins?

I certainly wouldn't complain if he went. I think one of the keys for Sutter is being close to home, so the Alberta teams should be high on his list. Maybe a trade to EDM which frees them up to trade RNH because they have fewer concerns at center? But in either scenario, VAN is probably getting a bad contract back, Brouwer or Pouillot most likely. But eh, if it comes with picks...and only two years on Pouillot with no NMC.

LOL. Retain 3M cap hit for the next 5 years? Yeah, as much as I hated that signing, I think I'd rather see what he can do in his 2nd year as a Canuck before crossing that bridge. I don't see CBJ having interest or any of those players waiving their no trades to go to those teams.
