Start the rebuild
I don't think rebuilding just yet is the best move. I'd say refrain from heavy buying, but maybe some solid signings in FA and some trades to get younger. Just seems like the best course of action IMO.

Reaves Trade Plus Selling Other Dead Weight
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>markykins1</b></div><div>I am sorry for seeming snarky seriously but did you type that with a straight face? ;) I bet they (or any team) could have waited it out and signed him on a PTO in the summer...</div></div>
My theory...
Shammy wanted to run it back.
Beating Tampa made him think the Leafs were close to winning a Cup.
Problem is the players they wanted to bring back didn't want to come back.
ROR, Schenn and Acciari.
So Shammy's newly hired puppet had to panic buy.
Sign a UFA. Any UFA to show Leafs Nation "hey we're trying!"
That's where Face Puncher Reaves comes in.
They even signed him for 3 years!
Was any other team really going to sign the regressing Klingberg?
Probably not.
But let's flush another 4 mil down the toilet. 🙄
Tree did get Bert and Domi the next day on take it or leave it deals.
Bert overplayed his hand thinking his excellent playoff would parlay into a long term deal. Wrong.
So he settled with the Leafs on a 1 year deal.
Everyone knew Domi wanted badly to be a Leaf.
So of course he accepted Tree's offer.
Most of Leafs Nation ate it up and Shammy sold his latest sham.
Signing Reaves would eventually cost them Lafferty who is doing quite well with first place Vancouver.🤔
So now puppet Tree is left with glaring holes on defense and a big question mark in goal.
He still has questionable depth in his bottom 6 lines.
But when you have Matthews scoring goals each game you can still win right?

For Podkolzin
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>markykins1</b></div><div>Not even for the Cup huh? You Canuck's are tough negotiators. Dowd is the ideal 4th line center and is all the things I mentioned in the description. You would love him and you would have him for 2 playoff runs at only 1.3 million per. I would add our '25 2nd rounder too?</div></div>
Trading Pod for a 4th liner when our bottom 6 had been good is just a bit short sited for my liking, i get the idea behind it though. Also yes, Canucks fans are tough negotiators :tearsofjoy

If there is a larger package around these two, possibly. Though Blueger, Suter and Aman are performing well in Van.

I am aware of how dumb this is thank you
This is very well explained but some of my thoughts:
TOR trade is just too many parts on both sides. I like a lot of the fits for both teams, but my guess is that they would just be in for pacioretty or tvr or edmundson or just dump brodie, not do all 4 in one deal. No matter how they are moved, I would expect the sum return for TVR + Pacioretty + Edmundson to be slightly less than what you have here.
Dowd to EDM is a great fit and this would be the least I would want to move him with retention.
I think Mantha will return a 2nd -- that is the pretty consistent going rate for secondary scoring pieces at the deadline (Rakell, Domi, etc.). Don't think Carolina is the best fit for his style of play though however. VAN, TOR, FLA would be my top fits for him.
Milano is not "need to move" level yet and that kind of return for him I think would be a little disappointing. Beaucage is a 22 yo forward who is currently in the ECHL and doesn't have a track record of high pedigree or success, a 3rd and 4th are definitely good but would rather just keep him around at that point.
The MIN deal is the most interesting, and I just think it comes down to whether the Wild decide to listen to offers on JEE or not. If they aren't (which is the way I would currently lean) then nothing the Caps could offer would get him out. If they are, then this would be a VERY competitive offer IMO. Lapierre + 2 seconds is already pretty good, and the Caps' unprotected 25 1st is an extremely good asset, taking Kuzy back is just the cost of doing business and could work out well. I would have this as significantly more than NYI gave up to get Horvat, and at least equal with what NJD gave up for Meier -- the two last big forward for futures comps.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>markykins1</b></div><div>Then they are downgraded. Dowd is (you know this) excellent defensively, can score, great on faceoffs...Caps have no one that could replace him.</div></div>
certainly true, all comes down to if the Caps think they can compete next year or not. Though, if there is one gm that I would trust to find a cheap free agent depth replacement for Dowd, it would be MacLellan. He's proven his worth in that regard with Dowd, Hathaway, Gustafsson, Milano, etc. I'd certainly like to keep him if they think they can compete next year (hell, I own his jersey), but I imagine he'll move this offseason because I don't think they can completely convince themselves of that.

Possible. Playoff teams will be looking for size and depth.
I know the trade says "any team", but for my money, if I'm AZ, I'd be more interested in Kuznetsov if I was shopping. Adds center depth, can play wing. See if he is rejuvenated by a move. Can replace Zucker after he gets dealt at TDL or lineup at center. Still think they should sell, but it'd be worth considering.
