Mittelstadt for Girard
For the Sabres fans who assume that Girard is an undersized offensive D-man and you "don't need him". Avs fans have known for years that his defense is what carries him. His fancy stats this year are better than Buffalo's top 3 d-men while not getting nearly the o-zone shelter that Dahlin, R Johnson and Power get. His PPG would be second on the Sabres. Girard is a top-4 dman on any team in the league, on a great contract and frankly I would rather have him that Mitts. I don't know what Buffalo's "Needs" are but it look like Defense is one of them.
CF% FF% OZS PPG
Girard 54.7 56.6 46.9 .47
Dahlin 53.6 55.2 59.6 .78
R Johnson 52.7 52.8 59. .19
Power 51.5 51.2 53.4 .35

Former #4 pick, on a good contract + the top Center prospect in the Avs system for
A C on an expiring contract, who is slow, is overachieving with his highest shooting % in 4 years and hasn't played a full season since 2016 + a high teens / low 20s prospect in the MTL system.
This is some serious wishful thinking,

Possible Outlook For Next Season
That's an easy pass for the Avalanche. No feelings about him as a player, but rather no cap space for him. What ever cap space the Avs have will be used to retain Towes (and then into the following seasons for Rantanen and Byram), then paint around the edges with $1M type deals.

Moving a legit top 4 D-man who exemplifies the way the Avs want to play for a 6th D-man and a 4C and a little cap room? Feels like a 3 quarters for a dollar trade.

Update with Newhook trade
Never read the comments they say. Everyone is mean they say.
Other than Malgin (spend that $ on a mean 4th liner - Hathaway or Austin-Reese or someone similar who can really PK and hit) this is my favorite Avs post in a while. I am all in on Suter as 3C, and all the pick refreshes is total gonzo chaos that won't happen, but I love it!
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Flotsam5</b></div><div>Go out and get Sharangovich, the throw in can be just about anyone that's not an important prospect. Maybe you don't even need it.
Otherwise, trade every 2023 pick you have for the best 2024 and 2025 picks you can get for them, and use those picks as ammo at the deadline. They probably have to with this roster, to fill at least one position. Otherwise they're fine through the regular season.
They're taking a chance with Sharangovich, Suter, and Heinen, but I like Suter as a Compher replacement, and one of Sharangovich or Heinen should be able to fill whatever top-six winger role the Avalanche need.
Upgrade Malgin with the remaining money. I don't know with who, but there's easily someone that can play fourth line wing for $1 million and be effective (I'm just not going to go looking through the list.)
Kill it at the deadline, win cup.</div></div>

Get sully some D
Girard, a bona fide top 4 d-man on a great contract for a legit cup contender for, checks notes, a prospect seen as "He’s not likely going to be a big point producer at the next level, but he should have two-way value as a second-pairing type at his ceiling and a third-pairing guy at his floor. " and a 3rd? Zero sense for the Avs. Don't let the bad Avs fans fool you, Girard is a great D-man that the Avs would only trade for a big piece back.

For Swiss Montana
I've said it once and I'll say it again, MacDermid is the PERFECT Blackhawk. Loved by his teammates, will (according to announcers) protect Bedard, he is cheap and best of all, he help the Hawks tank. He is terrible and will help you lose another 6-8 games.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Snowhawk18</b></div><div>Crap deal for the Hawks.
MacDermid is a low level face puncher that doesn’t do anything consistently at the NHL level, he is a no value asset. So that means in this proposal the Hawks are giving up 4 picks;including two seconds; for Colorado’s first (#27), which is too much.
If on draft night there is someone the Hawks really like who is still available at #27 then perhaps the Hawks would trade the two 2nd round picks you proposed. If the Avalanche insist on including MacDermid then my offer would be no more then picks #44 (Ottawa 2nd) and Chicago’s 3rd (# 67).</div></div>

Sabres playoff roster 2023
OK
The good -
21 EV / 28 total goals on a team leading shooting % ( a likely unsustainable) 17.4% / to compare - McDavid had 18.4 & Matthews has 12.2 / I would assume a regression here)
Offensive Point Share - 3.6 - Good for 6th on the team
The So-So
Sheltered TOI - He started 47.5% of the time in the D-zone, 17th on the team
TOI - EV - 11:50, 19th on the team
Takeaways - 24, 11th on the team
Blocks - 15, 18th on the team
The Bad
+/- (a terrible stat, but here we are) -23, 31st on the team ahead of Bryson who played 16 less games.
Defensive Point Share - .2, 22nd on the team
Corsi - 49.7 - 19th on the team
Fenwick - 48.3, 19th on the team
PDO - 96.8, 25th on the team
SH TOI - Zero
Expected +/- -5.6 - 25th on the team
He is simply a dumpster fire defensively on a team that is up and coming but not world beaters defensively. This is all readily available data online that a donkey like me can look at. Imagine teams with a real analytics department, and what they see. This is why people, myself included, are not fans of him.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoyalBlueSabres</b></div><div>Show me one metric that has olofsson being a dumpster fire on defense.
Below average sure. But he has been torn to shreds on this site lately for no reason.
The fact that he is a 25+ goal scorer not playing top line minutes and not on PP1 would have others players lined up to get multiple picks. Don't know why there is so much hate going to olofsson.
The only reason he is being shopped is buffalo has similar quality players that are younger and need a spot in the lineup.</div></div>

I've posted before but even at 50% retained, Olofsson is a terrible pick up for the Avs. He "scores goals" yet every other metric shows he is a terrible defensive player. The $2.75M slot is more important that the two 2nds.

Kuzy is a horror show on D. His Corsi was 48.4, good for 20th on the Caps. Fenwick Relative was -3.6, good for 28th. He was truly sheltered, with a 64% O-zone start. His FO% was 47%. There is no stat that demonstrates he is a good 2C, plus he has two more years at a terrible number.
There is absolutely no way that Avs should take on Kuznetsov, much less give assets.

I am sure that I speak for all Colorado fans when I say thanks, but no thanks.
Jake is a nice player, but even before the trade, he is just not what the Avalanche should spend assets on. He is a $6M winger with one year left on his contract. The Avalanche should (and will) spend assets on a 2C.
Even if there was interest in Guentzel, why would the Avs trade a legit top 4 D man on a great contract AND a 1st round pick and a cog in their PK.
This is a bad bad bad trade for the Avalanche.

I like Hathaway because he can still skate, PK and hit (250+ hits last 3 years), all of which were missing in the playoffs. My personal feeling is a Malgin/Nieto type is not hard to play against, and if the Avs are going to mix in Newhook/Meyers on the bottom six, there needs to be more difficult players to play against. I could see Nieto at a really cheap contract, but I am out on Malgin. Classic AAAA player.

You are under the assumption that you are done tanking. MacDermid does two amazing things for you. He is a deterrent on the ice (not really but your announcers can claim he is) AND he is so awful that he will help get you a very high pick next year. You should be more open to possibilities :)

I think the hockey world views Ullmark's great season as a benefit of playing in the Bruins system, rather than being a true set n forget starter or Vezina challenger(should win it this year, hope for Helle).</div></div>
I also see Georgie as part of the Avs system. If you look at Grubauer, he got progressively better each year in the system. I would expect that Georgie, especially with a healthy blue line, will post even better numbers next year. There is absolutely zero need for the Avalanche to move him.

DNVR Rocks The Rockies
I think that the McTavish trade is much more interesting that Ana fans give it credit for. Top pair D-men do not grow on trees and are seemingly the hardest players to find in the NHL. I know Ana feels good about it's pipeline of young D, but Byram could be the next Scott Niedermayer. Byram's big bugaboo is is health...which i get...but Byram would immediately be on the #1 D pair for the Ducks, likely run the PP1 and bring some genuine swagger to the blue line.
If I am the Avalanche, I decline. I know McTavish is enticing, but I would think the Byram is about the perfect D-man for this team. They want to play fast, move the puck out of the d-zone, have the D attack in the O-zone. There are very few D-men in the league that can do what Byram does when he is healthy.

The only thing is that COL's 2023 first is not terribly valuable to them unless it nets 1) a big-time 2C rental or 2) a decent 2C/2nd line forward at a decent price and extra pieces. In this case, I think Avs take a serious look if this were on the table.</div></div>
I keep stumping for a trade down with someone like Chicago...grab 2 seconds and use one / trade one for a Yegor or Foegele (with a little retention) type of player. I genuinely think that with all the top end talent, finding harder to play against players to create a balance is going to be a priority.

Trading Up
Im gonna start cutting and pasting this into ACGMs trying to dump Olofsson.
He is a terrible two way player, who's goal scoring does not offset the fact he is a complete defensive liability.
Looking at last years stats, His +/- was -23, 31st overall on the team. Digging deeper, his Offensive Point Share was 7th on the team at 3.6, but his Defensive Point Share was 22nd at 0.2, 15 total blocks on the year and 16 hits. Corsi relative was -2.0 (19th) and his Fenwick was 48.3 (20th). He had a favorable Oz start at 52% so that stats suggest he was getting slightly sheltered and/or PP time, where His GF/60 on the PP was 4.9 vs 2.7 at ES.
For comparison, constant fan least favorite Kurtis MacDermid has a DPS of 0.7. The Avs worst regular was Alex Newhook at 1.3. I'm not saying DPS is the end all be all, but it is a good barometer and it is clear that Oloffson is just a bad defensive player. The Avs do not target these types of players in trades.
