I think Faulk would be a great fit with Muzzin.

Yup, looks good. Not sure if Dzingel is the guy, but I think the Devils definitely have the space to go shopping for a top free agent.

It is so he can make more money, not for the purpose of leaving. In 5 years he will re-sign with the Leafs again for a massive deal. Small haircut now for a huge payday later. Matthews is a career leaf 100%

A lot depends on the next few months, but that would be the expensive scenario. He is a winger who plays with JT and coincidentally is having a breakout year. Would be shocked if he signed for more than 10

Just because he signed a 5 year deal doesn't mean he is leaving.. It made sense for both teams. The only major player to leave after their first deal after ELC was Tavares and he came to the Leafs. Crosby signed for 5 years and then re-signed after.
If the Leafs are competitive in 5 years he will stay.

The Pietrangelo Rumour
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I think you have prove this doesn't work. You still need competent bottom end players. Is Pietrangelo such an increase in play over Zaitsev that the Leafs lose Kapanen and the pick? Sure would like to see other teams offer for Pietrangelo. Seems like the Leafs are the only team in the running for his services.</div></div>
Hey man. Not gonna be one of those guys who is rude about it, but everything you just said is very off haha. Yes there is an insanely huge difference between Pietrangelo and Zaitsev. LIKE ENORMOUS. Kapenen is a good young top 6 winger with upside. Bracco is a low-mid level prospect that has very little trade value. Pietrangelo is a proven top pairing, top 10 in the league stud Dman.
You want quality you have to give up quality and Zaitsev and Bracco are not quality assets.
There are over a dozen teams who would be interested in Pietrangelo and I would wager that they could get better offers from other teams.
I think a more realistic offer for him would be Johnsson or Kapenen + Liljegren + 1st rounder..... No Zaitsev

Frankly 9M isn't all that bad for him in free agency. If he signs long term, that's actually market value. As a Habs fan, I'd pay 9M to get him on my team any day of the week.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Luc3</b></div><div>That's a huge over pay he's not worth 9 mill probally around 7 to 7.5 maybe</div></div>

I'm really sorry this post has upset you to such a large degree. I was under the impression that teams must be cap compliant by the last day of training camp before they are able to place someone on LTIR. I could be wrong. Again so sorry that I have caused you such discomfort

5 ways to get cap creative
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LetsTalkNHL</b></div><div>I've made that Horton deal before! Although I think the acquiring team could take the whole contract at that point. Similar to the Hossa trade, but its only for a season. I think if Toronto can get Matthews for under 12M that would be insane. Kapanen on bridge deal makes sense! As for the dman trade, I think Toronto would want Zaitsev part of the deal to help them out with cap. Other than Marner maybe wanting more, good work. All this does work.</div></div>
The best argument Dubas has to negotiate Matthew's deal is his overall production because of his injuries. His per game stats are amazing, but he likely won't even lead the Leafs in points because of time missed. Two years in a row with significant injuries could drive his price down

Another Tanev attempt is this closer Canuck fans
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>You sound like one of the fans that think, unless you are making highlight real plays you are trash. Zaitsev's one move is fine, it gets the puck out of the zone and limits scoring chances. He's not at all flashy but he's been extremely reliable in his own zone, despite being paired with a guy who loves to leave the front of the net wide open while he coasts out of position watching the puck.</div></div>
No. I think if you are trash, you are trash. Modern NHL defenceman can move the puck and they can skate with the puck and distribute. Zaitsev plays a very desperate game. He tries to survive his shifts. Watch him closely next game. Not saying he "is bad" but he has been bad.
Also you don't need to cast judgement on me personally. I watch the games and I know hockey.

He has 2 points in 28 games. Although I agree that he has offensive upside, it is very far-fetched to think he is a 40 point D-man. If Vancouver wants to take on his contract too, go for it. I would even throw in a 2nd rounder

Tanev is a superior player to Zaitsev and he's only a year older so I don't see why they'd want Zaitsev. Also I'd keep Zaitsev, he's really getting good at killing penalties and he probably the best Leaf defender in his own zone. The Canucks have major depth issues so Brown would be a good addition you can play anywhere up and down the lineup and he's not expensive either.</div></div>
What are you guys talking about? Zaitsev knows one play: High hard off the glass. He has been bad. Overpayed, underperforming... Bad.

While I think 11 aav is the minimum, I also think is is about the cap for him. It seems to be a ready made number that benefits all. His stats put him about there with inflation, JT's contract puts a soft cap there, and a reference point for him (remember JT was a UFA with a huge Bidding war) and once you factor in Dubas being stingy with the injury, his being an RFA with no rights the team being able to easily show what they can offer him to keep the team together, and the fact they likely announce his captaincy when he signs the contract, all signs point to ~11 as the base price for the contract (11.34 meaning he wants to be highest paid and a bit cute with it).</div></div>
So.. He might end up being the highest paid player of all time... You see his goals tonight? 12.34 mill is a bargain, 11.34 at this point is a dream

Right, I think 11.34 is actually the minimum, but Matthews holds all the cards here (unlike Nylander). If Matthews pulled a Nylander and demanded 13 mill, you would have to sign him.. You could negotiate but you can't risk losing MAtthews

Leafs cap next year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>I cannot see Marner that high. The (media) hype around this team is real and every time someone does anything remotely competent their value triples according to the site. For real Marner's value on this site has gone up at an average of $1000 an hour since the start of the season. Its absurd. Its why we were joking that the asst. coach will get 6 million, because everyones values are high.
I will link this here, as it shows all of their stats up to the start of this year (was made in summer). Marner has improved his stock since, but you have to think that Nylander would not be overly far behind had he been here, especially with Matthews hot start.
<a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/884206">https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/884206</a></div></div>
I read that post. Kudos to your diligent research, however, I would argue two things...
1) You said assuming there is no cap inflation which there is. It is cap % that is important.. Not actual dollars. At Eichels same cap %, Matthews would make $10,863,950... Now.. Eichel signed after a 64 point season (on pace for about 80 points) Matthews has proven to better than that.. Significantly. Matthews is guarenteed 11 at the absolute lowest!!
2) Guys have improved since you wrote that piece. Marner is currently on pace for 111 points..... Now even if he only gets 90 points. That already puts him in the Draisaitl, Benn, Kucherov conversation... And to my cap percentage point from before, we would be lucky to get him for 9million
