older forsure.
but the core..not really...
...d-core rielly 24, ekblad 22, with travis dermott 21, stil have liljegren in ahl, and even schenn (who is massively underrated) is only 28. ya keith is old, but still has elite speed and brings vet savvy and grit.
o-core matthews 20, marner 21, kadri 27, kapanen 21, brown and hyman 24 and 25. lawson crouse is 20 and theres good ahl players and of course every draft we draft new young guys.
is the team older? ya obv when you add a 34 yr old d-man and a 38 yr old c then your team gets a lot older. also adding ladd, hartnell, kovy makes team older. frankly team was so young that adding schenn (28) makes team older. why is older worse tho? or why is younger better. as the older players skills decline, thornton shifts down to 4th line c. spezzas on a 1 yr deal anyhow, as is hartnell. as kovys legs get older he becomes a 3rd liner. but at the same time, kapanen is ready to be a 2nd liner, in 3 yrs keith may be a 3rd pairing d-man, but at that time dermott may be a 2 or 1b type d-man. etc and etc.
4:
martin is a very diff player from schenn and hartnell. hartnell can be a bit of a darcy tucker. maybe a poor man's gary roberts or a rich man's corson. martin is no more than an enforcer and great locker room guy. schenn is a good d-man who skates well for his size and plays a safe game and is an intimidating presence in front of the net and in the corners. someone who wouldn't be pleasant to go up against in a 7 game series (unlike zaitzev). i think of schenn if using old leafs teams again as analogy, a bit like a yushkevich type. again, he is not comparable to matt martin who plays a diff position and doesn't contribute outside of enforcer and locker room.
3:
why both spezza and thornton. a-never enough centers. b-spezza on 1 yr deal and would be best 4th liner in nhl lol. c-both remain excellent on the pp. d-why 3 yrs for joe? cause as he recently said he "bleeds teal' and will want to stay in san jose (hey that rhymes). how to get him to bleed blue and white and come over here to join pat marleau? by giving him 3 yrs. how to make it work from our end? by making the cost not prohibitive, so ya 1 yr at 8 mill is better. but 3 yrs at about 5 works, cause the first yr of the deal hes an excellent 3rd line c, giving us matthews kadri and joe 1-3 is excellent, he wins faceoffs and contributes all over the ice making eveyrone better. year 2 of the deal he hopefully will provide same type of bang for buck, but as his skills decline, he can move to 4th line center and simply be an overpaid 4th line c who is excellent in the faceoff circle. and yes he'll be overpaid, but not 8 million overpaid, only 5 million overpaid. and after a year like that his deal is done and retires anyways. so 3 yr term is not prohibitive as long as cost is okay.
2:
i'd rather have ladd than martin and zaitsev. ladd is a 2 time cup winner. former team captain. scored 24 goals as recently as the season before last. don't get me wrong hes not connor mcdavid. but hes a heck of a lot better than matt martin or zaitsev. in addition hes paid less. so the deal adds a veteran 2 time cup winning former team captain who is more than capable of 20 goals, and is a bonafide net front presence on the power play, while saving about 1.5 million in cap space.
1:
i think that package does get ekblad alone. keep in mind that, ignoring a disastrous game 7 against boston, gardiners reg season was a 52 pt season, following a 43 pt season the yr before. both seasons was a plus player, plus 23 and plus 9. hes signed to a very team friendly 4.05 million dollar deal. ekblad is paid 7.5 mill signed for another like 7 years. has never had a 40 pt season and at points last yr was losing ice time to matheson. and oh ya, the deal isn't gardiner for ekblad lol. its gardiner and willie nylander. you know the 22 yr old phenom who just put together back to back sixty point seasons. i think a package of nylander with gardner can get you ekblad plus more.

leafs
2018 draft 2 firsts, 2 seconds, 1 third. 2019 draft 1first, 2 seconds, 2 thirds. 2020 draft 1 first, 2 seconds, 2 thirds.
top 5 f prospects: puljujarvi, crouse, kapanen, grundstrom, brooks. top 5 d prospects: juolevi, liljegren, dermott, wood, nielson.
tanev and pietrangelo 28 and 27 yrs old signed for combined 11 aav till 31 and 30 yrs old. two elite rhd anchoring r side. resign nurse to 4-5 aav long term in offseason (bozak, komarov, schenn ufas). then nurse and rielly 22 and 23 yrs old signed long term combined ~10 aav anchoring left side of top 4. top 4 d grows with growth of nurse and rielly, becoming elite skating and size, offensive and defensive, reliable and steady. for ~ 20 aav for next 3 years. juolevi, liljegren, dermott, wood, all ready to take jump in 1-3 years too.
up front offense won't be an issue with matthews, marner, brown, marleau, kadri, kapanen. as bozak walks in offseason sutter takes spot on 3rd line, 4th line center sign ufa if brooks isn't ready. komarov walks ufa and replaced by crouse in role. puljujarvi may be ready to make jump or grundstrom. pipeline keeps getting restocked with boatload of top 3 round picks in 2018, 2019, 2020 drafts.
2018 offseason. with bozak, komarov, schenn, gleason, cowen off books, 22.2 million to spend. after 4-5 on nurse, left with ~17.5. sign matthews long term something along lines of 10 years 10 aav.
2019 offseason. with hainsey and mcelhenney off books, 15 million to spend. spend .85aav on backup goalie. and sign marner to draisaitl like deal. 8 year 8aav. sign crouse and kapanen to bridges.

leafs dynasty!!!
trades:
1 vegas moves up on bunch of picks and gets some late late rounders. also gets carrick, bracco and soshnikov and mcphee likes fehr, and have to take lupul and marchenko too.
2 columbus exposing murray anyhow and rid selves of hartnell contract. pick up decent prospect sparks, good young player leivo for fraction of hartnell cap hit, move up 2 rounds in 2018 draft and get a 2019 2nd rounder.
3 yotes get decent prospect tymashov and a 2019 4th to swap marincin for schenn. contracts match evenly.
4 sharks get younger to rebuild on the fly. pick up 2 young mid 20's high ceiling, improving pieces in JVR and gardiner. give up 31 yr old vlasic whos contract is up in a year. cost is a 2017 2nd and to move back from late 1st 2018 pick to mid 2nd 2018 pick. also give up a 2019 3rd and a 2018 5th pick.
5 avs need to blow things up. cant get value for duchene or landeskog. but both are still relatively young, as is barrie. also have pickard, jost, rantanen, high upcoming picks, grigorenko, zadorov. they get value and make impact move by trading away mackinnon and two decent d prospects. in return they get willie nylander, and top prospect leipsic along with moving up from 2017 second to 2017 first, in return for a 2017 4th, moving back 2018 2nd to 2018 third and moving back 2019 3rd to 2019 4th.
6 rangers rid themselves of staals 5.7 mil contract that runs till 2021while getting a center which is what they need in bozak with a cheaper contract that expires next year. cost for them is 2018 1st, 2019 2nd and some later round picks in future drafts.
7 isles finally get a goalie and also rid selves of halak's brutal contract. give up strome who exposed anyhow in expansion draft, and give up nice prospect dal colle...have barzal, hosang etc anyways. restock fwd prospect with andreas jonson, get fan fave matt martin back and get their goalie. cost for them is a 2019 1st and moving back from 2018 2nd to 2018 early third (avs pick). leafs then buy out halak's contract.
free agents:
after resigning holl, griffith, leipsic, brown, hyman, bibeau and sparks. leafs sign ufa's marleau and thornton to nice friendly 4 mil contracts. marleau a saskcatchewan boy loves babcock. both would like chance to move to same team and finish off on exciting contending canadian team together under babs. then sign two talented scrap heap goalies to cheap deals. ryan miller who starts and brian elliot who competes for starting job.
future looks very bright.
gotta resign komarov, strome, vlasic, murray and schenn in a year. let komarov walk or sign team friendly deal. sign vlasic big money. strome, murray and schenn depends on this years play.
have dermott, nielson, lots of picks, dal colle, gauthier, rychel, all upcoming. kapanen, marner, mackinnon, matthews should all take giant leaps forward in their game as well. brown too.

leafs dynasty!!!
core avail for years of dynasty. up the middle 1-3 auston, mackinnon, kadri for years. marner, kapanen, brown, strome all young. dal colle nice prospect. 2018 draft 3 firsts, 2019 draft 2 firsts. multiple 2nds and later round picks too. to keep cupboard well stocked.
d core also young. vlasic has nice 5 yrs left. rielly, murray young. schenn zaitsev, staal all underrated (albeit staal overpaid and zaitsev maybe too) mid-young 20's. dermot and nielson nice prospects.
goaltending miller or elliot can have bounceback. just needs to make routine saves. not hard to find quality netminders if need be. as can be seen by bishop for a 4th, fleury for free, etc etc.
vets and grit to win NOW...thornton, marleau, hartnell, komarov all grizzled vets tough to play against. vlasic too.

leafs decade dynasty
genius.
defence all young with stars in making murray, rielly. heavy hitter hamonic. steady brodin. "vet" bogosian. all under 26. all signed long term except murray who gets raise to 5ish at seasons end on long term deal.
offence: two elite superstar centers in matthews and mack. elite superstar winger in marner. star in making in reinhart. kapanen, brown, young up and coming good players. "vet" kadri is a perfect 3rd line c. hartnell and komarov provide grit on wing and dirty goals.
miller is adequate in net and has lots to prove. bibeau is good enough to be nhl backup.
farm: 2017 15th pick get best player available. still have rychel, gauthier, grundstrom on marlies for callups and future. d: still have dermott, nielson on marlies for callup and future.
2018 draft have own 1st, buffalo 1st, and 6 second rounders.
2019 draft have own 1st, buffalo 1st and 3 second rounders.
with mark hunter those 13 picks within the top 60 in '18 and '19 drafts will be used very wisely and stock farm with long term talent. leafs will contend in unprecedented dynasty for decade(s)
trade rationale: vegas gets pick and soshnikov for taking fehr whom mcphee has history w anyways.
colorado retools losing best player and superstar mack but gets star d gardiner on a great contract, gets 50 pt c in bozak, a 2nd rounder, two 4ths, and some top tier prospects, liepsic, carrick and bracco.
columbus sheds salary, picks up great winger jvr on great contract, gets b level prospect in lindberg, gets underrated dman marincin.
minnesota gets prospects not needing protection, and moves up in draft with a leafs 1st. cost is brodin and future non first round picks.
buffalo gets elite superstar in making willie nylander to pair with brother alex. also get solid winger leivo and prospect tymashov as well as serviceable 7th d marchenko. sheds long term expensive bogosian contract. cost is reinhart who is underutilized and has underperformed somewhat, as well as future picks and a 2nd in this draft for leafs 4th in this draft and future later picks.
islanders shed terrible halak contract and finally get goalie situation sorted out. cost is hamonic, moving down from 15th to 38th in this draft while getting a 3rd rounder in this draft, and giving up a next yr 2nd and '19 4th.
