Haha keep grasping at straws. The Athletic is a top sports website and wouldn't include it if it wasn't legit. I come up with an actual NHL source that believes he's worth a first-round pick and all you can do is lamely suggest that because the person isn't named they don't actually matter; when anybody could realize that the name can't be released because it's almost the Trade Deadline and they'd be tipping their hand. You're a pretty narrow-minded person when it comes to asset management from a hockey perspective, continue to live in delusion

First, the "only thing" being RFA as opposed to UFA is huge. Qualify Athanasiou, and if you can't come to terms with him and he signs somewhere else you're looking at at least a 3rd round pick assuming he gets more than $1.5M, which he will. Even if that doesn't happen, Pittsburgh would be able to move his RFA rights for AT LEAST a 3rd round pick at the draft if they didn't want to sign him.

Second, as I said above Rutherford said that he's looking for younger guys who play fast and can fit with Malkin. That is not Galchenyuk. That is Athanasiou. You can't look at P/60 in this case because the players are so stylistically different and would play such different roles. Galchenyuk is on his 3rd team in 3 seasons. Rutherford has been trying to give him away, and he can't. Meanwhile an exec went on record and said that if Detroit shops Athanasiou, they could get a 1st round pick for him in the right situation.

As I said in the original post, Daley is a throw-in. If you guys don't want him who the hell cares - it's just veteran depth for the playoffs, and Daley has already won 2 Cups in Pittsburgh. He knows the system and he knows the players. And you're completely ignoring the Sharks' pick, which is shaping up to be mid-60's.

The "significant piece" is cap space. Even if he's buried in the minors, he still counts for almost $5M against the cap and you guys have to sign Krug, DeBrusk, Chara, etc. this summer. Buying him out saves you less than $1M in cap space next year, as he'd still count for $4M. Use your head before shooting down stuff just because your team has to give up an asset. That's the price you pay for signing crap deals - believe me, as a Wings fan I wish I could get rid of our garbage with a single 1st round pick. You get Perlini, a 23 year old who has looked okay prior to this year, when he's spent the majority of it on one of the worst teams in NHL history. Nobody's taking Backes off your hands for a 4th round pick, bud.

The whole thing there is that they'd be getting back NYI's 2nd rounder, which will probably be in the late 40's/early 50's. Since Nashville's 1st is likely going to be in the tail end of the 1st, they'd really just be moving a round back. Maybe the trade is Fabbro and a 2nd for Nyquist and a 3rd, and if the Preds make the WCF those move up to Fabbro and a 1st for Nyquist and a 2nd. I don't think this happens regardless, but if it's true that Fabbro could potentially go the Jimmy Vesey route and not sign with the Preds then maybe there's a little more incentive to move him while his value is still high.

The Sharks situation is fascinating to me. It sounds like Karlsson is enjoying his time there and seems like he'll re-sign, but if there are doubts about him coming back it would be brutal to lose arguably their best Cup shot because of Jones. Jones being signed for another 5 years complicates things too, because bringing in outside help will likely affect Jones' confidence; and if he doesn't get back to form that contract becomes an albatross. Like I said I don't think any of these actually happen, but the Sharks deal in particular I thought was interesting.

Don't disagree that Zaitsev isn't a bad defenseman, he just doesn't line up with our window to compete; by the time the Wings will be actually contending he'll probably be 30. We're trying to make space for a couple of our defensive prospects as it is, Zaitsev would just be adding to the logjam. Maybe if Daley or Ericsson was going the other way, but I don't think Toronto would want that.

This illustrates why you should do a little more homework before commenting on another team's prospects. Veleno and Berggren aren't signed yet because they were literally just drafted. It's not uncommon at all for players just drafted to wait a year before signing their ELCs, especially those who don't have a shot to play in the NHL the year they're drafted. Rasmussen is "soft" because he had a fractured wrist this year? That's obtuse. Guess the 33 points in 14 playoff games count for nothing. I'm not taking shots at you because you're a Habs fan, I'm taking issue with you talking like you know about the players in the Wings' system when you clearly don't.

Judging by your tons of Montreal Armchair GM teams, you're a Canadiens fan. So it's clear you have no idea what our prospect pool is like; we also have Rasmussen, Berggren, Svechnikov, and Veleno, all of whom project to be good NHL forwards. Also, do you really think it's as easy as just getting a physical? He's 38, it's all about how his back feels to him when the season starts, not a doctor. You're pretty misinformed.

First - there aren't cap issues on this team, there's over $9M in cap space after the LTIRetirement of Zetterberg. Did you look at the roster? Second - Holland gives out brutal contracts to bottom six players, but he doesn't trade away stars like Bergevin does so I'm gonna disagree hard there. Bergevin is a world class idiot. Third - Edmonton's looking for a right handed puck moving defenseman; Jensen is that, and he's cheap. Babcock loves Glendening, and at $1M per season he's not a bad deal for a 4th round pick. The Islanders have had nothing but issues with Ho-Sang and need to replace offense with Tavares leaving. Nyquist is a top 6 forward and costs them a prospect they clearly don't plan on playing anyway, plus they get a 4th round pick out of it. It's not a slam dunk by any means, but it's not a ridiculous proposal at all.

Yeah thanks to DonVito for that illuminating response. I wouldn't attach our 1st round pick regardless; if Pacioretty signed a deal like Neal, no more than 5 years and $6M or less per year, I would for sure trade Helm and Nyquist for him, and maybe throw in a 3rd round pick or something. But I think after being pretty underpaid on his last contract, he's going to be looking for something more in the $7M range, and I would be SHOCKED if Montreal traded him in-division, especially to a team like Detroit. No doubt Pacioretty is going to want to light Montreal up after what he's been put through, and I think if they can they're going to deal him to a Western conference team.

Green's NTC turns into a 10 team no-trade at the 2019-20 trade deadline; if the Oilers are in a playoff spot, I think he would accept the deal with the idea of padding his stats playing with McDavid, in an effort to get a bigger deal the following offseason. As for the 3rd being an overpay, I disagree; Klefbom just turned 25 and is on a fantastic deal.

I wouldn't hate that deal, I feel like it'd have to be more in the $7M range though. Pitching him $8M over 3 takes him to his age 30 season, and I would point to the deal James Neal just signed as a 30 year old (5 years, $5.75M). He'd be one of the focal points of Detroit's offense, which would pad his stats and improve his outlook for the next deal. With the cap increasing, he could be looking at something like $6.5 over 5 on his next deal; that'd be an average of just over $7M over 8 years, which is better than $6M over 6. That being said, there's obviously more security and less injury risk with your proposal.

Yeah I don't disagree that it's too much, but with extensions needed for Mantha and Athanasiou, and a potentially big contract on the horizon for Zadina, I didn't want to give too much term. I used the Stasny deal from a few years ago as the base for it, and the fact that Duchene would only be 28 at the start of it. I don't think Panarin or Seguin would make it to free agency (maybe Panarin but I'm skeptical), but Skinner is an intriguing option I hadn't thought about.

I was trying to be as objective as possible; I like Svechnikov and I don't want to see him moved, but I couldn't see Edmonton going for just Green, Saarijarvi, and a 3rd, and Svechnikov gives value without including one of our big prospects.
