Trade Deadline v3
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>All_Knowing</b></div><div>Caps would still decline. I for one am not a fan of Robertson (mainly due to his injury track-record at such a young age). Also, I just don't see his potential being a top 6 forward. But that is just me (granted, I do not watch the Leafs often so what do I know lol)
Genuine question - he just got sent down to the AHL...can you tell me why? This doesn't have anything to do with the trade above, but just curious why (especially since Leafs fans are asking for at least a 2nd in a trade return for him)</div></div>
Glad you asked; and as for what the Capitals are demanding; that's fair, as a team you would want to go get the best return possible which is potentially a 1st rounder. It was just in my eyes - I wouldn't know a team willing to give up a 1st for a top-9, regardless if he's the best depth forward in the league. As for Robertson, he does have a track record of injuries in previous years but he's been healthy for the most part this season. The truth is, the kid's got a rocket of a shot and he has shown glimpses of a top-6 sniper role. However, he hasn't gotten much opportunity (when he did, he showed up) and the coach doesn't trust him enough to keep him in the top-6 over players like Knies, Bertuzzi, etc. He's being sent back to the AHL because there's no point in having him in our bottom-6 on a checking role. I believe he needs a change of scenery and a legit attempt at a top-6 line.

Niemela is a B prospect and Ruhwedel is an underrated top-6 RHDFD that can be slotted into a top-4 spot if needed.

Trade Deadline v2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brady_t12</b></div><div>You’re right I misread it it’s not 50, my bad.
The biggest thing is term. Dowd has this year and next with 1.3M against the cap, whereas Tanev is more expensive and has no term. Dowd is also legitimately one of the best defensive forwards in the league and can win faceoffs and PK (and he’s right handed which matters for some reason I guess idk).
I understand where you’re coming from, I think the thing that gets lost in the conversation is the caps can hold dowd if they want and go for a run next year which is very possible with the salary coming off the books this summer and the impending kuznetsov buyout. If it was Dowd with 50% retention for Robertson one for one, the caps would probably have to take that and run, but I don’t know that the leafs do. I have no idea how these two teams value these players honestly.</div></div>
Nic Dowd is the best depth forward in the league no doubt, I don't blame WSH for selling high on him because that's exactly what they need to do, it's just as a Leafs fan I wouldn't feel comfortable giving up a 1st for him. Robertson for Dowd I'm all for because keeping Nick would ruin not only his value as a young winger but also his development as a potential top-6; I may have asked for too much with the 2nd rounder but maybe a pick WSH is willing to compromise alongside Dowd would make it seem like a fair trade for everyone.

Peeke and Larsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>hockeynutter</b></div><div>I agree. The only trades I am willing to trade firsts for (despite other posts I have made as ideas) are for young players with great potential already on term and in the nhl. Top 1 I can think of is Chychrun but he is left handed and I can only imagine what Ottawa wants for him. Tanev was a good idea but not a needle mover. The best moves are depth moves and let our best players play it out. Most winning teams apply this model. Tampa (goodrow and Coleman were third liners) Pittsburgh (hainsey), Vegas (
Barbashev) limited moves to help the needle but make the starts do the work. (Colorado forgot their deadline move was similar)
Last year while yes O'Reilly was helpful was an overpay. McCabe has worked out in the long run it looks like thanks to the term. Schenn is the type of deadline move that works.</div></div>
100% agree. I understand we are desperate for a top-4 RHD but the truth is there aren't any that could be acquired without damaging the entire structure of our roster and collection - or lack thereof- of picks. The main source of this problem is our cap space.

Peeke and Larsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>hockeynutter</b></div><div>Peeke could be a good depth D for us but as a cap dump. Peeke has rarely played with worse stats than the Boosh. So to trade more for Peeke is non sensible. As for Larsson, sadly it would take a deal like this or more as Francis is currently not willing to trade Larsson. But I agree, his trade is an overpay as well.</div></div>
Even though I don't believe Larsson is top-4 quality, I can't help but applaud teams like SEA and MTL; the definition of overselling your players (not a diss, because if they can fetch first rounders I'd truly be jealous). Example? When MTL told everyone in the league that Ben Chiarot was a top-4 DFD when in reality he was a top-6 TWD that could hit and cross-check: When that deal between FLA broke out I couldn't help but admire the absolute fleece by MTL. In my honest opinion, the market for a RHDFD for TOR is gone; Tanev was the only candidate and he's in DAL. At this point, TOR should just stack up on depth given their cap situation, available players, and assets to trade.

Peeke and Larsson
1. Peeke is a nice bottom-pairing aggressive defenseman however he is not capable of a top-4 role.
2. Massive overpay for Adam Larsson: This reputation as a top-4 DFD would have worked 4-5 years ago, but he's gone downhill. If Larsson is so good I wonder why SEA are struggling for a playoff spot; surely it has to be from something...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brady_t12</b></div><div>Caps decline. They're paying to acquire Robertson and then throwing in a 50% retained Dowd for free? Robertson isn't worth a first round pick plus. He's a valuable player and I personally would love to acquire him, but this trade just is poor asset management from the caps perspective.</div></div>
The retained salary is not 50%; it's a small percentage in order for Dowd to fit in our cap. I don't think you're inherently wrong - it's just a matter of how much you value Dowd: If Tanev, an aging top-4 RHDFD won't fetch a first; I don't see why an aging top-9 FWD would fetch one.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsCanucks</b></div><div>I didn't think it was possible until I saw that Chris Johnston clip with Savard in their top three trade targets. Still unlikely, so you're probably safe on that front, although I don't think it would be that bad for Toronto given the quality of the late 1st rounders this year. Savard would bring some positive value in the playoffs at least.</div></div>
The thing is though is while he is a big boy, we need a defensive-minded RD to carry Rielly's horrible D. Savard was an amazing DFD during his tenure at CBJ, but he's given up on defense and gone full OFD in MTL. Does he turn it around or change his style up in TOR? Too big of a risk, especially for a first rounder. I know it's odd to say Savard is now an OFD, but he has contributed decently offensively but his defensive quality has dropped down significantly.

Rangers Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fangm</b></div><div>Makes loads of sense for NY who need a top 9 C and W.
Rumor is they are looking at Henrique + Vatrano and the price is Kakko + 2nd. This is a better duo for a similar price.
For Toronto, the top 9 is just broken. Domi/Tavares can't be the 2/3 C and seriously expect to win a round teams will destroy the Leafs. Kakko is solid defensively to balance out Nylander and he has an awesome shot to complement Nylander's playmaking. Johnson is a risk but at least he's shown he can be a 2 way C. Domi has never done that and never will. Mostly looking to catch lightning in a bottle with Johnson. He's playing his way out of the league maybe a move to a contender lights a spark.</div></div>
Johnson was a 2-way C a decade ago; he's not good at all - you're treading off reputation. TOR gives up Domi and Bertuzzi who both get TOR more wins than a duo of Goodrow and Kakko.

LEAFS DEADLINE
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jaok3</b></div><div>The way Holmberg has played he shouldn't be moved. Rielly was again lost in his own zone, you would think this long in the league he would start to figure out that he doesn't chase the guy crossing the front of the net that is Bush guy to leave the backdoor play wide open. He has the least d-zone IQ of any d-man on the team.</div></div>
Totally agree with this. To be fair, he is a great OFD with a big emphasis on his offence. He definitely performs in the playoffs in terms of scoring but people completely disregard just how horrible he is on his own end. For years the Leafs have been looking for the perfect RD alongside Rielly and they found Brodie. Now, Brodie is having a terrible year but to be fair not a lot of defenseman are going to look great when you have Rielly bringing you down; that’s how BAD he is on defence.

Contrary to the reputation Savard holds as a DFD - you have to also realize he was an amazing DFD in CBJ: But in MTL? He’s actually taken a step back on defence and actually provides good offence with not great defensive numbers with the Habs - though odd that sounds. He’s an odd one for sure, but in MTL his contributions indicate he’s playing like an OFD.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jamnjon</b></div><div>I agree that the trade is fine, but why do so many people want to send Gregor back to San Jose? Gregor is terrible and to be honest the real return for SJS are the picks - I can see both teams accepting and I can also see SJS not comfortable taking Gregor back.
