<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rew77</b></div><div>Kings trade is good JJ is terrible POJ will be playing in the NHL this year. The pick 4 5 6 round any will do.
The Edmonton trade I would rather keep ZAR</div></div>
Would rather keep a 4th liner who we replaced in Sceviour compared to getting a kid who was just picked 3rd overall recently. Interesting strategy to have a million fourth liners with no upside.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>I have researched POJ. Fairly heavily actually when people were proposing Johnson to LA at the trade deadline. He's been a pretty disappointing 1st round pick. For someone who really hates Forbort, I'm surprised you like this kid. He's essentially the same player. 6'2" beanpole with zero physicality. Decent mobility but not a lot of offensive contributions.</div></div>
POJ is a pretty good skater and puck transitioning defenseman, I can't say I watched many Wilkes-Barre games, but the stuff I have read about him was mostly positive. Hes got a pretty decent stick defensively to make up for some of his lack of physical play. I don't think he will ever be a huge point getter, but he could be a guy who still creates offense through smart plays in the defensive and neutral zone. And I agree that LA would likely buy Johnson out after a year or 2 when they are truly trying to compete again, and Johnsons buyout isn't really that bad at all.

Penguins 20-21
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GetDeadKid</b></div><div>I could buy the concept of this if McCann were being relied on for scoring. If he does end up at 3C next season, the onus won't be on that line for scoring like it will be for the top two and PP. I can't see throwing away a really solid young defensive forward for a pick. You could convince me to trade away Hornqvist; I think he's declining quickly, but not ZAR. He's worth way more in Pittsburgh than any low round pick could offer.</div></div>
The concept is to put competent scorers and creators around McCann to help him score. He put up 35 points in 66 games last year and that was with Simon/Marleau/Hornqvist as his main wingers. We've seen in the last 2 or 3 playoffs that we need more than 2 lines that can score. We simply can't have a whole bottom 6 that cannot produce goals. The 4th line is already the designated shutdown line with Tanev and Blueger. You could really easily keep ZAR and put him over Lafferty, but that leaves you very tight to the cap, especially since Simon is injured to start the year. ZAR is also 26 and been in the NHL for awhile. He will likely continue to be what he is now, a good defensive forward who is pretty much offensively inept. He has no real capability of sliding up the lineup and giving you quality minutes in a scoring role. I also think the Penguins would be better off shuffling between some guys like Miletic, Lafferty, or maybe Poulin or someone in the lineup over ZAR and seeing what they have to offer.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GetDeadKid</b></div><div>ZAR/Hornqvist> Smith/Ennis and a 6th. These feel like downgrades to me.</div></div>
Ennis is a much better offensive player than ZAR. Zach Aston Reese is an above average defensive player, and Ennis is about average. McCann is a good defensive center but needs to be surrounded by goal scorers. Comparing just raw point totals, Ennis had 70GP-16G-21A and ZAR had 57-6-7. Hornqvist is still good, but his cap hit is too high to allow us to truly upgrade the defense and 3rd line both. Smith is a slightly worse version of Hornqvist, but he also shoots the puck a lot more and controls the shot share more than Hornqvist when he is on the ice. Smith would even be a good option for the top 6 if Kapanen flames out in that role. Over the last 2 seasons Smith had 145 GP-39G-30A and Hornqvist 121GP-35G-34A.

We wouldn't do it. Murray alone is probably worth about a late first or early 2nd. And I would say Hornqvists value is about a 2nd or a 3rd. This mock makes our bottom 6 way worse and that was one of our biggest issues last season.

Well, the Hawks really don't have a goalie for next year at the moment, so they need someone. Makes more sense to cash in on the 15th pick while we have it, and Rutherford hasn't seemed to inclined in trading firsts the past year or two. If we select 15th this year, as well as having Poulin from last year, we will actually have a decent prospect pool (nothing spectactular, but solid for our standards), and it might allow Rutherford to trade someone already drafted (Hallander maybe?) We won't need to trade a first to fill a massive gap either given the roster is fairly well rounded already.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>claysbar</b></div><div>That much retention and Jarry is gonna have to include more of a return. Not so sure on the others because of the FA status on Tof and Hall.</div></div>
I imagine Hall would resign here if we reached an ECF, could be wrong, Toffoli would walk in the offseason but the Penguins would have the room for Hall this summer.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Capitalfail67</b></div><div>Shultz is better than Barry. Jarry could probably get a 2nd but why downgrade to help the leafs? Rest of the trades are okay I guess but this team doesn’t need to make moves. They just need to get healthy</div></div>
Schultz has been fairly mediocre for us since his first season here, Barrie would excel in our system (maybe/should be different with Babcock out), and if Barrie got back to the level he played at just last year would actually be a noticeable upgrade to Schultz, and would help especially when Letang is out.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PenGoater99</b></div><div>Barrie is atrocious, no need to get him</div></div>
Apparently you didn't watch the last game where Schultz got torched multiple times.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Yojimbo</b></div><div>That LA trade is hysterical. Joseph, Bjugstad, and Johnson w/$1M retained... for Toffoli. Flat no. Retaining that much on Johnson makes it illogical to trade him.
Joseph is considerably more than enough for Toffoli alone. Toffoli is barely a 20g 40PT guy. He isn't a star. He's a 3rd liner plus.
I offer Bjugstad and Johnson, maybe a 4th... that's all that he is realistically worth.</div></div>
Maybe I sold low on Bjustad, but Johnsons contract is brutal. He's been meh this year but losing his contract even retained makes things a lot more breatheable, and Riikola deserves a spot in the top 6. Jack is still pretty bad.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>I don't like the idea of over paying for hall.
I know he'll get a 1st and a prospect, but not that one. Especially when they get Chucky too. That doesn't work for me.
As for as the TOR trade. Jarry for a 2nd is fair, but I don't think they move him. I think they move DeSmith instead.
People panic too much. Schultz was always a sheltered Defense man.
This is nothing new. Remember the cup runs where Sullivan would pull him off the ice after 4 second shifts to avoid the mismatches.
Come on.
What you see right now is the effects of the Letang injury. Because he's not there to swallow up whole minutes. Even though tons of people on here wanted to trade him.
When Letang comes back, Schultz ends up back into a sheltered role with Letang and Marino taking those harder minutes.
Praise be Sullivan put Riikola on the Right side last game. That was a step in the right direction. But that pairing with him and JJ isn't all that strong right now. Riikola is swimming on his off side, but at least it's not JJ so we don't here how awful he is and he's the worse defense man in the league even though he's playing his off side.
But you can tell the on ice issues there as Riikola is no better at back handing a pass on his offside than most other defense men......which means he can't.
When you can't go point to point, you suffer. It's having a negative impact on the bottom pairing. Sullivan has to pull his head out his ass and either play chad send chad down and bring in Trotman to play there. Not being able to support on that pairing is not the answer. That goal where Riikola was getting out played on his offside was just painful to watch, you could see it developing. JJ could only stand exactly where he was suppose to be and do nothing. But people will blame him for it.
They just need to keep their head above water here. They got a point. Maybe it's enough. We'll see.
But the answer for the defensive play starts with Letang coming back,</div></div>
I would assume Hall could come here with an extension (which the Penguins could afford) if we gave up that much, didn't say that in the notes or anything though because you truly never know. Completely agree with pretty much all you had to say on the defense, however, Schultz getting torched when Letang is gone is a problem, Barrie so far seems to be a victim of poor fit in Toronto, that could be in large part to Babcock like I said earlier. Marino has also been solid, but he is still prone to rookie mistakes which is just what you would expect, but he's not going to be able to eat enough minutes just so Justin Schultz can get favorable matchups. Simply if Schultz plays better theres no reason to trade him, but analytically he's hardly (if at all in stretches) been a top 4 defenseman. I think Barrie would offer more.

Lets not pretend it's not one bad contract for another. He's 34-35 years old this season. That contract runs till he's 37. It's little more than a cap dump.</div></div>
Carter is nowhere near the negative on the ice that Johnson is, and Carters been playing decently on a trash LA team the past couple years, the Penguins can't take on Carters full contract, and if they retain 50% they are going to want a significant add to be paying 2.5M to Carter and 3.25M for JJ. Johnson is a awful contract, Carter is just overpaid.

Penguins easily decline. I wouldn't take that pile of garbage for just one of Bjustad or Pettersson, all you gave up was spare parts for a borderline 2C and a 23 year old rookie defenseman who should be a main stay of our top 4 for years to come.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgfresh78</b></div><div>Is it because of DeMelo or do you think Ottawa just doesn’t have interest in Gudbranson?</div></div>
I think DeMelo has a lot more value than that especially this year on that contract (which naturally Ottawa loves more because of Melnyk), they are pretty much at the cap floor anyway, so I have a hard time seeing them take a ton more cap back unless a team is really paying a lot for it.

So we've got an experienced defensive defenseman to compliment offensive one Schultz, a former 1st rounder (@4) who wasn't nursed correctly and who would benefit on playing top6 and a 4th rounder for a player who can be substitutd, a prospect who's gonna be paid, a young goalie not needed and a pure cap dump.</div></div>
Kris Russell is in the Jack Johnson tier of defenseman despite not being Jack Johnson.

I doubt we'd have to add a 2nd or anything that high of value to JJ only IF we attach Bjustad or Rust and took nothing back (like your trade). I could see Rust/Bjustad+Johnson for nothing, but I doubt it would cost us another 2nd (Bjustad and Rust are probably valued at around 2nd round picks.) Also don't think it makes sense to sign Hutton, much rather take a flier on a cheaper guy for one year, like Micheal Del Zotto.
