Flames Summer - MTL MIN OTT
The Flames have a ton of pieces but they eerily remind me of the Avs back in the 2014 season when Colorado lost to Minny in the first round as a top seed. Not a lot of playoff experience and a team that needs to build from within, keep the current young assets and go from there. It sounds boring but we in Denver have been through it. We may lose to the Sharks but our future is a lot brighter than San Jose and it's nice knowing that.

Flames Summer - MTL MIN OTT
I don't think MTL sends two second round picks for Brodie. He got exposed against a younger, faster Avalanche team. Habs won't look at that trade twice. I think you get the Zucker trade but the key for Minny is to be smart and not mortage away pieces just for a window. Avs stayed the course and didn't give up a whole lot knowing they would be back in contention after a first round exit last season and here we are.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Claebom</b></div><div>Do you know anything about Johnson whatsoever, or just look at stat lines? Johnson's contract is fine; he's their #1D, at worse their #2. When he's injured, their wheels fall off entirely. He's fairly consistently put up around 30 points, plays 25 minutes a night, takes defensive starts more often than offensive starts, has okay possession metrics considering, and is the perfect guy to have on their blueline for the next 5 years while their kids start to come in and take more responsibility. This is an absolutely horrendous deal for the Avs.</div></div>
Yea I have to agree with this. That trade would be horrendous for Colorado. EJ has been easily the best blueliner for the Avs logging top minutes and flying around every game on both ends of the ice. CO has two goalies now, both can be great so not sure why they’d trade for a declining one and lose a piece of their defense at the same time. Not trying to bash you or anything willowkink but Avs fans would burn down the Pepsi Center or at least protest in front of Sakic’s lawn if that went through. For what EJ does for Colorado, his contract is fair.

why its not smart to trade the sens 1st rd pick
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ThatGuy</b></div><div>I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you don't follow the sens. There are teams in far worst positions (NYI, MTL, CAR, BUFF, ARZ)
Karlsson was literately in Ottawa all summer training with the team. It's pretty clear that the reason why he doesn't have a contract is that the sens (Melnyk) are refusing to offer him Doughty money (Major Signing Bonuses because of potential lockouts). <a href="https://theathletic.com/430661/2018/07/13/lack-signing-bonuses-may-have-been-factor-in-erik-karlsson-turning-down-senators-contract-offer/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://theathletic.com/430661/2018/07/13/lack-signing-bonuses-may-have-been-factor-in-erik-karlsson-turning-down-senators-contract-offer/</a>
Also, it's his contract year, he's going to show up. AND Bargain power? omg, the difference between now and March 1st is that instead of having 4 teams interested in Karlsson, there is going to be 16 playoff teams in a bidding war trying to add the best rental anyone has ever seen. And if Tatar gets you a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd....... Imagine what Karlsson gets you at the deadline...
Also, doesn't matter.. 1) Duchene is a really good player. 2) Sens have a surplus of good prospect coming up the pipeline 3) As long as it's not Hughes, which is extremely unlikely, that OTT 1st rounder isnt a big deal.</div></div>
It doesn’t mean anything that Karlsson has been training with the team haha. Duchene trained with the Avs when he wanted out because the coaches were there and that was who owned his contract at the time. Karlsson obviously isn’t going to go train with Vegas and give OTT the middle finger.
Also, I don’t need to follow OTT to know what a bad apple can do to a locker room. It happens in all sports and wouldn’t you think the GM NOT giving him Doughty money make the situation even worse? The Tatar deal was agreed to be horrible from the Knights end of it by most NHL analysts. Moves like that can set teams back for what, a decent hockey player (*cough* Duchene)? I would think after Sakic bent over your GM, others will be more careful. Duchene does have exciting skills but, assuming you don’t follow the Avs, he never does anything more than flash at times. Very inconsistent player that never takes the lead and disappears often throughout the season leaving you wanting more. Good luck with him ?
Oh and the OTT first rounder is a HUGE deal, don’t downplay that just because you’re annoyed with the Sens situation because nobody will buy it. The Avs will take their chances molding a top 5 pick into a special hockey player while the Sens keep banking on Duchene turning into a star. We hoped for that in Colorado for 8 seasons ?♂️

I mean really. Do the words WIN NOW mean anything to you? We don't have 4 years for them to develop into something other than a 20 point winger. Furthermore, talented players come in and perform. Crosby and Malkin didn't come into the league and dud out 20 point seasons. So spare me they are getting gold. This is a show me league. You aren't worth anything till you can prove you can do it. So keep your "prospect" what a horrible trade.</div></div>

OTT roster isn't has bad as people make it out to be. Especially if Karlsson plays until the trade deadline. I will shoooook if they finish last. Either way, it's a deep draft, outside Hughes, it's pretty wide open and teams will be getting good players throughout the entire first round.</div></div>
Also if they keep EK until the trade deadline, that hurts OTT even more because teams know they have the bargaining power and OTT gets a locker room with a guy who doesn’t want to be there. Ask Colorado how that worked for them with Duchene.

Ottawa absolutely are as bad as people make them out to be haha. I think it’s a top 5 pick easily and that’s puts the Avs in prime position to build on the youth and talent that they already have. Picking top 5 means immediate impact player, Avs will take it.

Next Year - A lot better
I actually like that lineup a lot. They played hard towards the end of the season and if Dahlin is in there with Carlson, Chychrun, and Ekman-Larsson then that could be dangerous. Also love the group of forwards. I think they could flip their season around and make the playoffs if they play their cards right and the lottery goes well.

AVS ‘18 ...
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>For sure, you're taking a gamble with Bernier & Hammond, but you're also going to be acquiring a goalie to develop who is close to NHL ready if you go that route, or you wouldn't take it. Like it or not the Avs are still rebuilding. Varly isn't the future and the consistency is no longer there as well as the injuries. Beyond that the Avs have Martin, Werner, Kvaca and Pajpach on the depth charts. Nothing really to get excited about. I agree the D still needs to improve and I seriously like your idea of getting Manson, but if you're still building your D and reinforcing and growing your forwards then why not do that in goal as well with acquiring a guy who is almost NHL ready? Is losing in the first round again, or even not making the playoffs, a big issue in that sense? I say not. I'd rather they missed for a year or even two to build a team that is capable of competing for a decent window, rather than a blip like this year (I think they're still a bubble team at best at the moment) or the previous one under Roy. Bernier and Hammond would merely be to hold the fort whilst (insert 22/23 year old goalie here) comes into the frame.
I agree it's not great that Nemeth was often our best D but I think you're being harsher than the reality. He's realistically a third pairing guy as it stands so he certainly shouldn't be the Avs best D, nor should he be expected to be. Timmins, I realise, is a bit bigger than the others, and he looked pretty comfortable in pre-season this year so the future is bright for him. He's still not a BIG body though, and yes Makar certainly looks more capable defensively than Barrie (as does Girard but then so does a pylon or a Nemeth lol). By the way you missed Zadorov from the list at the end there. As for De Haan being +11, Nemeth was +27 if we're using the plus/minus stat. Simple truth is that as I said, the Avs are still in a rebuild and the goaltending, the D, and the forwards for that matter, all still need to improve.
One final thought....why is it always golf in April for ice hockey players? Surely they can find something better to do than ruin a good walk!!! :laugh</div></div>
I did forget about big Z which is my fault. He's obviously the future cornerstone of the defense considering EJ isn't getting any younger (or healthier). The one thing I'll say about the +/- difference between De Haan and Nemeth is that Nemeth actually got to log quite a bit of ice time with the studs of Mac, Mikko and Landy and they were one of the best units in all of hockey. The Avs to add to that, were +20 in scoring differential thanks to that ridiculous stretch they went on to start the new year so Nemeth got a lot of that tacked onto his +/-. The NYI were -32 overall in scoring differential and De Haan still figured in as a plus guy.
As far as making the playoffs again, I think it's extremely important. This organization has taken an "it's okay to miss the playoffs in the name of development" attitude enough. Getting playoff experience for the young guys was huge but missing next year and maybe the year after that can be hard on a team, just look at Buffalo and how down in the dumps they are mentally. You can add a few guys like JVR, Perron, Ian Cole, Manson (get rid of Barrie, Ducks need scoring badly and we need D), hell even Patrick Maroon, and the Avalanche will make the playoffs while guys like Jost, Compher, Kerfoot, Mikko, Girard, Kamenev, Toninato and Zadorov continue to get better with the help of talent around them.
My defense would look like this:
Manson - Zadorov
Girard - EJ
De Haan - Cole
Pateryn (healthy scratch)
Timmons develops in the AHL and Makar joins the Avs in time for their playoff push.
