Agreed on the Guentzel points, but after Washington and St Louis won cups the league got more physical especially in the playoffs. I would say that out of the Rangers, Islanders, and Canadians the rangers played the least physical style against the Crosby line

That’s fair, I’m just stating that I think Marner and Sid would be a better pairing in the playoffs than Guentzel and Sid. Mostly due to the fact that Guentzel is less successful at playing his forechecking game in the playoffs due to his size, and when faced with a physical presence in the playoffs the line usually under performs

Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Not_Isles5513</b></div><div>Guentzel has had far more success in the post season in terms of both point production, and Cup wins. I’m not saying he’s a better regular season player, but the parity between star players in the NHL is closer than in any other league. That being said even if Marner is better, the gap between these two guys is not two first round picks.</div></div>
I would agree with that a couple years ago, but I’d say that over the past couple of years Guentzel and Sid’s line in general has been shut down comparatively in the playoffs when they play a team or line that uses over physical play in order to shut them down offensively other than last year when the top line had a COMBINED 26 pts in 20 games, in the prior 3 playoff years they have had a COMBINED 18 pts in 42 total playoff games (for clarification each player had played a total of 14 playoff games each over the three seasons. Sid had 3 pts, Rust had 6 pts, and Guentzel had 6 pts) also in those past 4 years Marner had 25 points in a total of 30 (83%) playoff games in comparison to Guentzels 16 in 21 (76%)

Because some believe that he is too small and doesn’t have the endurance to be a top 6 defensemen for an entire season. He’s a good offensive defenseman, but SUCKS in his own zone. I’d prefer if we used him to make a move this offseason. And I think getting rid of carter and replacing him with basically a new McGinn, and getting a fast youngish winger who I think would be good on Malkin’s wing, would be a solid deal

I usually use the taxi squad to show prospects or roster players that are playing in the minors. I didn’t realize that a 35+ contract doesn’t give you cap relief if the player is in the AHL. Whoops lol

Selling a bit
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockeyfan1234</b></div><div>It doesn’t matter what I believe the core can do. They aren’t going to do the core dirty like that. You never bet against Crosby, Malkin, and Letang.
The difference between LA and Pittsburgh is that their core was younger when they started the re-tool/mini rebuild. The pens just gotta keep building through free agency and hoping it works out and hope to get out of some bad contracts in the process while not giving up high picks/prospects.</div></div>
How do you get rid of bad contracts without giving up the future. The only contract that is a good buyout is granlund. And agreed that LAs core was younger, but if you try to extend the window through free agency (which is exactly what Detroit did that pushed them so far back years ago) your team only gets older and there is risk of signing even more bad contracts.
Also it’s worth noting that FSG has no connection to the core. The penguins do, the ownership does not. Lemieux is no longer active in the penguins ownership so FSG has no loyalty to the core unless they want to be loyal to them.

Selling a bit
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockeyfan1234</b></div><div>Why can’t we lose him for nothing? We aren’t tanking so that’s what happens to winning teams. They lose free agents. Not sure why we can’t afford re-signing him either.</div></div>
We aren’t a winning team anymore. We need to think about the future instead of thinking a bunch of 35 year olds can will its way to a cup. I love this team but I realize that Malkin and Letang are defensive liabilities, and Crosbys line always gets killed in the postseason as of late due to the overly physical way teams counter it. If the goal is to win a cup as soon as possible, then a rebuild or retool is the fastest way.

Do you really think this core can win? I keep posting ACGMs where I either sell or go all in. Every time I get met with responses of either “but the core deserves to win” or “you’re trading away too much to compete and ruining the future”. I’m tired of people not realizing that we are in the end of the era and the core is all 35+. We are the new red wings. It’s time we treat the problem like it is instead of pretending we can win another cup and causing a decade of awful teams after the fact instead of trying to do a quick retool that MAYBE some of the core can be around for kinda like LA

Trying to acquire draft capital without selling
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mglgoalie33</b></div><div>wasn't Joseph on waivers? I think Hughes has less interest in him than he values both draft capital and glue players like Evans. Plus, with Barron playing well and Mailloux coming into Laval there is less and less space for a rhd that doesn't blow them away. I think they'd say no for these reasons, but it's hockey. Anything can happen.</div></div>
Was he on waivers? I definitely never noticed that he was but I’m not saying it didn’t happen. Also he’s a LHD not a RHD, but idk what MTL depth is on the other side. I was just thinking that he’s a young puck moving defenseman and a team like MTL that is still a young team not in a playoff window yet would prefer to have that than a 26 year old bottom 6 player (not saying he’s not good, there is a reason I want him)

It’s worse on purpose… hence the title making moves for the future. I don’t think the current roster can make a deep playoff run, and if you have that belief then why would you want to build a team to compete. Also why pay a player 6.3M over 4 years when you can pay him 5M over 2 years. Plus I think Yamamoto would be good on the pens roster, but that’s just my opinion.

Yes. I’d rather work torwards future success than putting off selling. IMO the current roster won’t be able to make any deep playoff runs, so there is no reason to be competitive. Plus some of the core would most likely want out a couple of seasons into the retool, and you may be able to acquire more future assets for them.

I agree, he is acquired from the flames perspective to either be the AHL starter (would only count 600K against the cap) or the NHL backup in case wolf fails to make the NHL jump and needs more time in the AHL.

Stick with the Pens. Not a single trade here is remotely happening.</div></div>
1) that trade COULD save ARZ and give that market a chance.
2)I wouldn’t say that the leafs are “a joke of a franchise”, I’d say the players around the league still have Aton of respect for it. 3)Debrincat is an RFA, he can’t hit free agency.

It’s more the term that’s the issue with his value. Teams would most likely play hardball and lower his trade value if he does want out. Keller is locked up for 5 years at a solid value cap hit which makes their values closer under those conditions. Plus the 2nd is the 38th OVR pick. I could be talked into adding more picks from ARZ tho
