We buy Beleskey out in the summer we're talking just over 1 million in cap penalty for 4 years (eating that is not a problem) when looking at the grander scheme of things Carlo is much more valuable to us than getting rid of Beleskey's contract (whether that be on the ice or in a trade)

You're wanting to buy Carlo when his stock is high... 1st and Kerfoot would probably get talks started...

Well obviously by my avatar I would have Getzlaf on that list... He's been injured most of this season, so his stats don't reflect, but I would argue that you don't have a shutdown line (which is just as important as a scoring line) I would probably have Getzlaf/Bergeron with either Benn or Gaudreau then sacrifice one scoring center and one right wing to fit them in probably Crosby and Wheeler/Kane and bump lines to move them down to the 4th line so it would look something like:
Ovi/McD/Kuch
Benn/Malkin/Kane
Stamkos/Tavares/Tarasenko
Johhny Hockey/Getz/Bergy
Still not my optimal set up, but it looks better already
Then on D you don't have Gostisbehere or OEL? I'd probably trade Josi and Keith TBH and rotate Burns to the top pairing
Hedman/Burns
Ghost/Karlsson
OEL/Doughty
Again not the "best" but you're looking better...
Then goalies... This is personal preference too... give me the choice and I start Rinne and back him up with Gibson (there are some things stats can't measure like Gibson's outstanding play behind a terrible Anaheim Ducks start this season; he still managed to maintain a .924 S% and a 2.55 GAA in spite no help at the beginning of this season)
see... "best" is subjective...

I had an idea that would send Looch to BOS, but it wouldn't have picks going the other way... Looch ($1,336,667 retained) goes to BOS... Beleskey goes to EDM: BOS gets a body on the ice, EDM gets out of their cap hit situation 3 years early, but the key selling point in this trade for EDM is it would open the door to a bigger package that would send DeBrusk/1st BOS/and other pieces to EDM in order for BOS to move up in this year's draft...
I'm not sure what those "other pieces" would need to be to make it work for EDM? RFA rights to Spooner? Krug? what prospect/s if any? This is just an idea I had rolling around in my head...
The up and down side for BOS fans is Looch would be committed to the LW position for the next 6 years at $4,663,333

If I'm Sweeney, I'd much rather wait until the summer and deal DeBrusk and my 1st (along with some other pieces) in a package deal, to move up in the draft...
I target a team with a top 5 pick and blow my load for a guy like Boqvist
This makes a hell of a lot more sense than dealing DeBrusk before the TDL for a guy like McDonagh...

I actually like this trade better in the offseason, but I think McDonagh has more value on the draft floor than he does at the TDL... that said I think Carlo has more value on the draft floor than at the TDL... anyway, I can't see this being enough, and I see what you're saying about hindering our depth on the right side; my only concern is that Carlo's stock crashes. Either way I don't see this being a good deal for the B's even though it looks like a good deal on paper.

I agree; I think Boston will be able to give him (Nash) a competitive offer in price but not in term. I think he'll take a bigger contract elsewhere. Spooner I think will be used to move up in the draft. Chara I think gets a 1 year extension. I like those lines though, they don't look bad to start the season.

Chara - McAvoy
McDonagh - Trouba
^That's an interesting top 4</div></div>
We're going to need to move some pieces in the summer in preparation for the 2019/2020 season. We'll have a few contracts that need signing that season and unless we want to be stuck behind the 8 ball we need to start working it in the summer. I know a lot will depend on player development, so it's kind of tough to predict, but I have no problem trading Carlo either, and if by the grace of God we do bring home Lord Stanley, Carlo's stock should be at an all time high. I wouldn't be opposed to going after OEL in the off season either. I think OEL-McAvoy would make a killer top pairing. But we'll have to see what we can do with contracts. Spooner's will be interesting; I wonder if they will use it to move up in the draft. Beleskey's will be interesting; it will either be dealt or bought out. Chara's will be interesting if we get a guy like OEL or McDonagh we will still have the room to extend him for a year, but do we do it? Nash will be due for a raise; I can see them keeping him around. I can also see them letting him walk, depending on if they feel like some of the younger guys are ready to step up. Our whole bottom line needs to be resigned; does this happen, or do they look outside for depth players? There's going to be a lot going on this offseason. Regardless if we win the Cup or not, our phones will be busy on draft day.

a ballpark of what NYR players are worth to BOS (not what they're worth, WHAT TH
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyRebound</b></div><div>Yea I'm obviously not a pro scout so they definitely have a better idea than me. I've just seen a pattern of these tall, "rangey" D-men that come into the league and they usually take two paths, and its that they either become a (when he was younger) Tyler Myers, or Colton Parayko that play with a bit of a desire to make a difference at both ends of the ice, or they become a Jared Cowen who has all the tools but never had the mind for the game and eventually finds themselves out of the league when they could've been sold high. I can't truly say he'll be one or the other because each case is unique when it comes to player development but as of right now his game reminds me of Cowen's, even though it is more sound defensively there are some parallels.
As for Miller, I have to disagree on that one. He's been quietly having a great season for the Bruins and playing well at both ends of the ice. The last few games he's been out injured for, the Bruins haven't nearly played as well as when he was in the lineup. Could be a coincidence but I think he's more impactful than Carlo or McQuaid right now</div></div>
That's what I'm worried about too, is his stock falling. As it stands right now either he doesn't see the ice or like I said he's just afraid to get out of position, and maybe time builds confidence and working with the same defensive pair will build some confidence in his other defenseman, but only time will tell. He is very raw and has a lot of tools to work with, and I'm no expert on player development so I can only trust in Langenbrunner and his team and hope for the best.
As far a Miller, I've got nothing bad to say about Miller. I think his game is solid. I'm glad we have him headed into the playoffs.

I saw where you were going to go with it. That's the point I've been trying to make the last couple of days. I don't think NYR and BOS are good trade partners because of this. Heinen/Carlo/Debrusk hold value just like Nash/McDonagh/Grabner because they all essentially fill the same roles and we have those holes plugged already there's no necessity to trade lowering the value for each party. Because of this NYR could go to someone else and get a much better bid for the same guys. Dealing with us doesn't make sense unless they want to deal for picks/prospects in which case we have plenty.

I honestly think the best road would be to break contact with the NYR and end trade negotiations. We have the top rated defense in the league; we don't need McDonagh that bad. Having to choose to discard one Heinen/Carlo/DeBrusk/McDonagh, I would choose to discard McDonagh. That's just me.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DirtyRebound</b></div><div>It definitely is media driven and it's usually a bit of a bend of the truth. Boston has definitely called NYR to see what the price for McDonagh would be, as probably has the other 29 teams. Everyone's going to do their due diligence on the situation as its not often a Top LHD becomes available.
As for Carlo, I think the Bruins would be okay for the playoffs, if not better, using McQuaid as the shutdown defender and Miller as the other guy rather than Carlo. For the future though, Carlo is obviously still developing and could be a decent top 4 defender and even now still plays pretty well depending on the opponent. The way I see it for him, it's mainly going to come down to his confidence and if he'll become a dominant player rather than a player who's just trying to not make a mistake.
I wouldn't be opposed to including Carlo in a trade for the right player, the only issue is Boston is stacked up on the LHD prospect pool and don't have anyone coming through on the right side other than Viktor Berglund, Daniel Bukac, and Cam Clarke, all guys who don't project to be anything more atm than a depth D at best, and you can't ride Miller/McQuaid for much more than another 2 years.</div></div>
This is what I wrote in another thread about Carlo and why I don't particularly like him, but I'm not sure if McQuaid/Miller would be a better bottom 2 Right Side than Carlo/McQuaid; I'm just not sure if I agree with that. But, I do agree with the confidence part; it goes along exactly with what I wrote about him:
I think he has tremendous athleticism and skates really well for a big guy. He does a really good job of clearing out the crease in his own end, and is a solid passer, but shows no hockey IQ at all. He doesn't know when to pinch and when to stay home, so he plays a cautious game all the freakin' time. With his shot aresenal, which he has a booming slap shot, and a wicked fast release on his wrister, he could score some serious goals if he just knew how to play the game, and could see the ice and the play developing in front of him. Maybe it will come with time and experience, and he can be responsible for 10-15 goals per season, but as it stands now he is just this lump of raw material that needs to be molded. Also he shies away from physical contact. He could throw some mean open ice hits on the forecheck if he wanted to, but he passes on so many. I don't know if he's afraid of getting out of position or what, but he doesn't play an overly aggressive game and he definitely has the size and strength to do it. Finally on to blocking shots. He seems to always be in position to block yet he doesn't??? I don't know why.
A lot of this could be coaching... Cassidy could be telling him to rush back on the forecheck and get into position, that could be his role, and since he's partnered with Chara some of the year, Krug some of the year, and Grzelcyk some of the year Cassidy could have those guys pinching when the opportunity presents and telling Carlo to hang back, but some of it falls on Carlo sometimes he's in a better position to pinch in and help the rush and he just has to trust in his partner that they will cover his end, and sometimes the opposing rush goes right by him and he misses opportunities to check; he has to know when to take opportunities and when to follow Cassidy's play. This is all stuff to expect from a young guy I guess, but what slays me the most is the way he is hailed in Boston and he hasn't really done anything yet.
Anyway, those 2 paragraphs sum up the way I feel about the kid. Maybe it will change over time, and he'll learn the game a little better and read the ice a little better, and be able to see the play developing in front of him, but as it stands now, I agree with you, he's not trying to be proactive he's trying to be reactive and just not make any mistakes. That was a good way to phrase it. But I will give him this, he is a hell of a lot more athletic, skates better, and possesses a better shot than McQuaid or Miller; he just needs to learn how to put it all together and use it to his advantage.
