The only trade to get the leafs back
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>Or just keep Babcock and convince nick lidstrom to come out of retirement</div></div>
That's a big part of the problem right there. Babcock's success has come with the Canadian Olympic Team and a stacked Detroit team. If that's the quality of a roster he needs to win then the leafs aren't winning anything in a cap world and with Babcock at the helm.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MikeyThePensFan</b></div><div>I mean there's going to be pressure on Dubas to make a move. If he stands pat, he could get fired as well.</div></div>
Maybe. But right now pretty much all the pressure is on Babcock. Once he's gone then the gun gets pointed at Dubas. For the time being his safest bet is to just ride out this roster. If he makes a trade and he loses it and things don't improve the pressure shifts to Dubas and he let's Babs off the hook.
Babcock has all sorts of credentials and a pretty stacked roster on paper. Let him adapt and coach his way out of this mess. It's why he gets the big bucks as the highest paid coach. If he can't do it, can him.
And then the pressure goes to Dubas if a second coach can't get better results with his roster. It's not like Babcock can, or Shanahan will, force Dubas to make a trade. He just turned over a 3rd of the roster this offseason. How many trades is he supposed to make?

Staal Bros to the rescue
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BurgerBoss</b></div><div>It works on Wild's needs as well. They need right handed forwards.</div></div>
Yup. And the leafs have a pile of them including Hyman who got forced to the left side because there's so much rw depth.
I really think there's a trade that could/should happen between these two teams. I used to covet Spurgeon cause I just assumed he'd be heading to free agency this year. Now that he's signed again I doubt that he gets moved anytime soon.

Yep, that seems like a great comparable. When an opportunity arises to improve the club I think the gm needs to act. Even if that opportunity isn't the perfect fit. There's rarely a perfect fit available but that doesn't mean you turn down guys like Panarin or JT. Every team would be happy to have guys like that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BurgerBoss</b></div><div>Bracco+2nd seems realistic to me... That should do it to get him retained.</div></div>
That's kinda the range of what I was thinking plus another small piece. But then I saw Jaytea's post on what Boston offered last year.
all of my trades include Bracco and a 2nd.. and before Brown was shipped to Ottawa it was always Brown, Bracco and a 2nd. That combo just sounds good..

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JayTea</b></div><div>Fenton declined Boston offering their 1st and either Kuraly or Wagner at the TDL last year for Staal on an expiring deal, so probably something around that value at a minimum (more if salary is retained).
I believe I mentioned above that Fenton was a moron. He could have let Staal go to Boston for the playoffs and then signed him this summer and came out ahead a late 1st round pick.</div></div>
I didn't know that Boston made that offer. As a leaf fan, I'm glad that got nixed.
With the way that the leafs are playing this year I could see them being sellers at the deadline. But I've always been curious about Staal and think he'd be a great 3c on a leafs team that could use alot of what he brings.

That's good to hear. I remembering reading that some poster thought it might be career ending, That woulda been be a crappy way to end a career.
With a right side of Weber/Petry/Fluery could you see Juulsen being up for grabs? If so, what do you think it would take?

Trade Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MikeyThePensFan</b></div><div>I don't disagree. The team Dubas is building contradicts with the way Babcock wants to play. Babcock wants a heavy grinder style that waits for opponents to mess up. Today’s NHL is attacking with north south speed and d men pinching. His style is late 90s early 00s western conference heavyweight style. That said, if it's not his decision to fire Babcock, and if he can't make that decision, he has to make moves that are going fulfill his wishes.</div></div>
Well, not really. He can stand pat, and just give babs lots of rope and allow him to coach his way out of this mess. If Babcock can't do it then he's hung himself with his own decisions.

Also, after overpaying him by roughly 1.5-2 million in the offseason, he lost the chance to get full value for his player in a trade.</div></div>
I doubt very much that Dubas is getting desperate. It doesn't even sound like it's his decision if Babcock stays or goes. That sits with Shanahan. It also sounds like he wanted him gone after last years 1st round loss. Why would Dubas make a trade to help Babcock out if Dubas sees him as the problem? I can't say if that Dubas's take on things, but anyone at arms length of the leafs should be able to see by now that Babcock is a big part of the problem.

Yeah, I gotcha. It's a bit hard to figure out why Babcock makes the deployment decisions he does. It's one thing if his approach was working, but it's not, and it hasn't for some time. Refusing to change with the mounting evidence that what he's doing isn't working should be a fireable offense in itself. I was just trying to make a funny out of it and keep it light

Until a few years, I didn't know I had Metis blood, therefore Native ancestry Sure looks like this branch of the family was denied in previous generations. I have picture of my great, great grandmother, born in 1825. who was half native. How could her native blood be denied and especially since her mother lived in town too. A distant cousin and family historian has traced the family tree and believes we are descendents of Tecumseth the last chief of the Confederate Indian Nation.</div></div>
See! I was right. I knew you had some noble blood in you, Pal. Tecumseh is one of the more underappreciated historical figures in our country. Without his leadership there's a good chance Canada isn't Canada.
The history of how first nation people have been treated is the darkest stain on our national identity. Its encouraging what's been happening with the truth and reconciliation process and with movements like idle no more. This generation of first nation leaders is inspiring to me. Lots of healing required still and there's along ways to go to address the inequities that exist and the mutl generational bs that first nation people have endured. But we'll be alot better as a people when that finally occurs.

Lol. I would! And with quite a few four letter words mixed in.
That photo is of Richard Wagamese - he was a helluva solid man. Wagamese.was the author of Indian Horse - a fantastic book about how hockey helped a first nation boy cope with the brutality and racism of the residential school system. Clint Eastwood turned it into movie. If you haven't seen it google the trailer and have a peak. Both the book and movie are great.
All that said, if I ever get to the point in my life where I could even carry water for a guy like Wagamese I'd consider that an honour. The dude was an amazing human being.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I just guessing, but I have heard that Keefe is the highest paid AHL coach. I'm betcha he can't leave the Marlies mid season to be an NHL coach, and I betcha the Leafs have the right to match an offer if he offered a NHL position next season. No, I don't think 95% of NHL coaches are afraid to coach in Toronto. Gee, if that scares you, maybe you shouldn't be NHL coach. Strange that we hearhow difficult it to play/coach in Toronto as a Leaf and that scares guys away, but I don't hear of players/coaches in any sport not wanting to play in USA big cities. This "Toronto" fear to me so unfounded.
Downside? I don't see it, and the chance for hockey immortality if you win a Cup or even Conference Final</div></div>
Yeah, I dont doubt that he's likely making an NHL coach's salary right now.
I'm not saying anyone is "afraid" of playing for/coaching the leafs. I'm just saying that if a player or a coach had two identical offers from two nhl teams, one of which is the leafs, then i bet alot of guys think twice about signing with the leafs. The outside noise and drama gets pretty nutty. I know I would, and I'm a leafs fan.

New lines to control Babs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ConnorsCousin</b></div><div>This might be a hot take and I typically don't comment on other teams because I'm not knowledgeable enough but from an outside perspective:
Babcock is probably 25% of the problem here. When you're paying guys like Marner, Matthews, Tavares, Nylander you'd hope those guys are pulling your teams to win. Draisaitl and McDavid make about Matthews and Marner money so you'd hope you're getting more production from your top guys.
You guys arguably have one of the best forward corps and they can't figure it out. You guys lost 6-1 to a Crosby-less Pens team. You're top 4 (3 without Marner) should be able to get more than 1 goal for your team and that's not the coach's fault.</div></div>
I don't think that's a hot take at all. Seems like a pretty spot on assessment, imo.
It is kind of a mystery as to where the leafs offense has gone. I'd say Babcock is at least 50% of the problem and the other 50% is on the players.
But you can't fire the whole team. So, fire Babcock, solve 50% of the problem with one move and sit back and watch the other half of the problem improve as a result.

No. I doubt Marner ever goes anywhere, and that's a good thing - he's a heckuva hockey player, even if he is overpaid. But it is interesting to think about what 11M of cap space can get you given team needs.
The leafs have placed their bet on their core and this cap structure . I'd imagine they'll ride that bet for a few years to see what it brings them. And I don't think it's a bad bet at all. But we'll see.

Lol. Pal!? The leafs are still an NHL team. We're just not a very good one right now.
It is a question that I wonder if alot nhl players/coaches/execs ask themselves though.. "do I want to be in Toronto?" There's always so much unnecessary noise and drama that surrounds the leafs. Alot of that is media knuckleheads driving nonsense, but a good chunk often seems to be about egos too.
So, if Keefe was given identical coaching offers with 2 different teams, one being the leafs, would he choose Toronto? I dunno. Maybe, given his history with Dubas and the chance to coach a young skilled team in a city starved for hockey success. But there's lots of downside, too...
