What an awful trade for Columbus, no chance they consider that.

Kinda funny that a Calgary fan would call Columbus "toxic". The upcoming UFAs on the Flames except for Backlund all wanted. Hanifan, Zaradov, Lindholm, Toffelli.
Now maybe Columbus is toxic....probably just incompetent.

Oh ok glad you’re able to decide for Kent what he wants. Glad a rebuilding team is moving a young player and a first for a second line winger and a 34 year old goalie. You make a lot of sense!!

Kent doesn’t want out. He literally never said a word about being demoted. And if we were to move him it wouldn’t be for this package.

Take out Kuemper and that would be considered for Laine, but probably ultimately still turned down. If you want to do a Kuemper swap with Columbus, it's Elvis you're taking back; Laine is not considered a cap dump here and we're not in any hurry to get rid of him.

I think the incentive is "we're a Canadian team so we deserve good players and you don't." Or "I'm also a Penguins fan so screw the Jackets."

Well yeah I agree. Werenski ain’t getting traded either. Can’t see letang getting traded unless the pens want to get an early start on the rebuild. I don’t see them doing a full rebuild until Sid retires

That's not close for Laine. We don't need to move him, so if we don't get a top-line winger return, we'd just hold onto him and hope he returns to the top-line winger form he's shown when healthy.
If we're doing conditions on picks and retention, it would need to look more like:
Laine (~$2.2M retained) for Smith, 2024 PIT 2nd*, 2026 PIT 2nd*, 2025 PIT 3rd
*becomes the 2025 NJD 1st if Laine plays 50+ games next season
**becomes a top-5 protected 2026 PIT 1st (slides to 2027 unprotected if top-5) if Laine plays 100+ games combined in 2024-25 and 2025-26.
Smith would be purely for cap/contract reasons, we'd likely immediately flip him with retention. for a 2nd or so.
You can't devalue Laine because he can't stay healthy, then give picks with conditions on him being healthy, and expect to get the high-risk/buy-low return. It's either a lowball return with conditions, or a full return and you take the risk. Otherwise we're keeping him.

Pretty “meh” for Laine. We don’t need POJ, and Smith as a rental (assuming CBJ aren’t in his NTC) doesn’t do much, particularly since the motivation for CBJ to move Laine is, in part, because they have too many young Ws who need roster spots.
I’d rather hold onto him and gamble for a comeback to pick up his value.

I guess I was misleading. I really didn’t mean Jenner in this instance, I was talking about big time players in general. Columbus holds a higher value on Jenner based on biases. Right or wrong that is just the truth.

Jenner has one of the best contracts in the NHL and is also the Jackets captain. He is not available. The deal offered is just horrible. Leafs don’t have the assets to land a big time player.

That is straight robbery. Alex has been great for the Jackets. That 3rd line was great towards the end of the season. Keep Texier, Silly, and Nylander together.

I do think he's an ideal target for the Leafs, though, to pair with Rielly. Provided you can find the cap space.

Pesce's about to be a free agent. Carolina can't afford to keep him and all their other parts, and I doubt he is a priority to re-sign compared to some of the others. That's a huge overpay for his signing rights, especially with the way his offense cratered this year.
Ottawa and Columbus decline, of course.

If you're trading Marner, he's dictating where he goes with the NMC, and I'd assume the acquiring team has an extension in place. You won't be getting that type of package from Columbus.
You might get it from a contender looking to add now, but it won't be CBJ, and you're not getting away with taking significantly less cap back in that situation.
