Capitals Projected Lineup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>staytru20</b></div><div>Djoos is higher on the depth chart than Bowey right now. If anything, the regular bottom pairing will probably be Djoos - Bowey. Vrana and Burakovsky will probably flip periodically at 2/3LW. Everything else is accurate; nice job.</div></div>
All of this.
Also, although I like the looks of this 4th line better it sounds like they want Stephenson to play wing and they're gonna have Boyd and Dowd battle for that 4C spot. I think this 4th line could end up being the regular one we see for a lot of the season though.

TOM WILSON 2.0 ( EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Jenner is on a 3M bridge deal. Will get paid soon. Not worth worrying about. Komarov skates about like WIlson but does have same size or fighting ability. Clutterbuck has size and fists, but not speed. Wilson is a pretty complete hockey player, but 21 assists after half a season with Ovechkin and Kuznetsov makes him less of a playmaker than TJ Oshie right now, who's making about the same money and is this team's real #1 right wing by minutes, points, esp/60, what have you...
I did anticipate Wilson's AAV being above those of Komarov and Jenner, but not Clutterbuck, who hits more, scores more, and is regarded pretty highly as far as leadership and team spirit go.</div></div>
Wilson scored 35 points this year with next to no power play time. Clutterbuck turns 31 in November and has never scored 35 points, ever. And just watch the guys play, Wilson is leaps and bounds better than Clutterbuck.
And Wilson is still growing as a player. I really feel he can be a consistent 45 point guy and offensive production is just a part of what makes him such an effective player. I agree that this contract was an over-payment, but I would take Wilson at his current contract over Clutterbuck or Komarov in a heartbeat.

Clutterbuck, Jenner, and Komarov have NEVER gone over 20 assists. Wilson had 21 this year as a 24 year old. Anyone can cherry pick stats.
And even if you'd like to cherry pick stats for Komarov or Clutterbuck, their best years are long gone. They're both over the hill and Wilson is blossoming into a solid player.
Looking at stats never tells the whole story either. Wilson is a far superior skater to all the players listed and his presence has a much larger impact on the ice. There's certainly a case to be made that Jenner is better than Wilson and could have a better career ahead of him, but Clutterbuck and Komarov are not in the same conversation as Wilson or Jenner at this point in their careers.
EDIT: Not sure why I quoted you twice...

TOM WILSON 2.0 ( EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>...or Jenner, or <strong>Komarov, or Clutterbuck</strong>. Those guys hit more and score more goals. Wilson is getting paid for his offense while playing with the best guys in the league. The Caps have overpaid for similar top five on five unit passengers like Jeff Schultz and Brooks Laich, and overpaid for similar tough guys like Brashear and Orpik. Most Caps fans were excited about all of those deals at the time they were signed.
Those of us who remember how they worked out over the years don't really need to be told to grow up by someone who was too young to know the last four times this happened, but thanks for sharing.</div></div>
Wilson is exponentially better than Komarov and Clutterbuck. Jenner is a fair comparison, and I think Wilson probably deserved around his money, probably a touch more. But when you win a cup prices are going to go up. And you can't just look at stats like hits and compare players. You can bump a guy and it registers as a hit, it's a flawed stat. Wilson is a much more complete player in all areas of the game than either of those guys. And even if you want to look at their numbers offensively, Wilson had a far better year than both Clutterbuck and Komarov and is 6 and 7 years younger than them respectively. It's pretty easy to see why he's making more than those two.
And the big difference between the Laich and Orpik deals and this one is that Wilson is still young and hasn't reached his potential yet. Both those guys got deals from the Caps as older players (Laich's during that nasty groin injury as well). I still think the Caps overpaid for Wilson, but it's still a deal that could very well work out for them in the end.

Tom Wilson: Much Better Than You Think
Good read. Definitely does a good job of showing Wilson's value and his role on the team. Sums up the situation pretty well. Definitely looks like an over-payment, but the guy is a valuable and productive part of this team, and it would be incredibly difficult to find a replacement for him.

This is a common misconception I'm seeing from a lot of people. He skated on the top line for about half the season. In the playoffs he skated on the top line every game and had 15 in 21 which spread over an 82 game season is roughly 58 points. Granted it's an extremely small sample size and we really don't know if he can be the productive over a full season, but he's certainly a top 6 forward. Was he overpaid? Absolutely. But this isn't going to end up being a back breaker for the Caps.

Unfortunately there's no chance Djoos and Stephenson sign for that little money. I'm thinking they're either going to trade either Vrana or Burakovsky or send Holtby out next season if they think Samsonov is ready.

Yeah this is the route I think the Caps will go. Even without the Wilson deal I'm not sure the Caps were gonna be able to afford him after his contract was up. Just have to hope Samsonov is the goalie of the future.

Brian Maclellan is the worst GM at signing players
Take a deep breath. Yes the Caps overpaid for Wilson. However, Wilson is trending in the right direction offensively. This could very well end up being an alright deal for Wilson. The Orlov contract is a good contract because he's playing at a very high level, Wilson could very well do the same. Mac is very good at evaluating talent and putting together a winning team. The guy is the architect of the first ever Stanley Cup champion team in the history of the organization.
And I see people complain about the Oshie deal and I get it. It's a long time and he probably won't be worth it at the end. But someone else would have given that to him and the Caps made the right call keeping him. he became an enormous part to the Cup run. Not every contract is going to be pretty when it's first signed. Let's see how this all unfolds this year.

This year it will most likely be Copley as the backup, at least to start of the year. They want to get Samsonov PT in the AHL. But I'm sure he'll see NHL action this year and he'll be the full time back up next year.

He's playing with some of the best talent in the game and still does not produce decent offensive numbers. I know he's not an offensive player, but if someone is making his money, they better be able to hold it down offensively. Right now to me, the contract is one of the worst in the NHL. But thats based off his past years. If he's able to put up offensive numbers, then the contract won't be bad</div></div>
As I stated previously, he wasn't with Ovechkin and Kuznetsov for a good portion of the season. If you take his playoff stats and stretch that over 82 games he was on pace to score roughly 58 points. Obviously that's a small sample size and it's a risk paying him the much hoping he can do that consistently.
I agree it's an over payment, but watching the guy play all year he clearly made great strides in the right direction offensively and I think he can be a 45-50 point guy. It's a risk it seems McClellan seems comfortable taking. I really thought he'd be getting about 4 million a year but I understand overpaying to keep the gang together.

Personally I think he'll be a 45-50 point guy with Ovi and Kuzya, which makes him worth the deal, it's just that he hasn't proven it over a full season yet which makes me a little nervous. Like you said definitely a risk and as of now it looks like an over payment but I could definitely see this working out for the Caps in the long run.

Definitely an over payment, but the guy is a very productive player. He didn't play on the first line consistently until the second half of the season and got no power play time and still managed to put up 35 points in 78 games. And his playoff performance is hopefully and indication of his future. Only 24 years old he's definitely still getting better.

Definitely looks like an over payment at the moment. I was thinking he'd get around 4 million a year but in years 4, 5, and 6 the cap is gonna be a lot higher and if he's putting up 40+ points consistently and playing the same type of game this deal could end up being worth the money.

Nash has already said he won't sign during the summer. It sounds like if he comes back at all it would be during the season. Also there's no cap room left to do anything with this roster.
