Oh and, Just a reminder, the penguins traded a 1st round pick for Ryan Reaves few years ago.</div></div>
the point still stands, if the team was not interested in signing him for nothing, why would they later give up a 3rd round pick plus a player for him. I think they should have signed him but for some reason they didn't want to, eight games isn't going to change that. And yes it was a signing, not a trade that brought him to Montreal in the first place.

the penguins could have signed kovalchuk for zero assets, but passed. Why would they give up a third round pick now?

I didn't say they wouldn't make it(although I do think there is a good chance they end up just barely missing it), I said Niskanen wouldn't be the huge deciding factor.

Discussion What is Galchenyuks true value
maybe a 3rd and some random prospect at best right now. Struggling UFA with a decent sized contract isn't a hot commodity, somebody would take a chance on him if they have cap room just cause of potential but right now the best bet is holding onto him til he either turns it around or til he leaves in free agency.

Panarin deal that doesnt wreck the Caps
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Looking back at this Spring 2019 post, on December 3rd, 2019.
Panarin has 33 points. Burakovsky and Niskanen together have 33 points. Murray has four points, just two more than Kukan or Nutivaara. I wouldn't trade DJoos for him.
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day!
Philly is in the playoff hunt with Niskanen's tough, two-way play leading the way. Columbus without Panarin, Niskanen, or Burakovsky, is in the hunt for Lafreniere. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.
Siegenthaler is already looking better than Murray. Playing 50% more PK. Scoring more. Just needs to get his endurance up to play those big #4 minutes Murray's earned (I'm kidding. He can play 19 minutes a night, but the Caps have Orlov and Kempny, and don't need him to). Vrana has 23 points and is 23. Burakovsky has 21 points and is almost 24. They're improving. Panarin has 33 points and is 28, likely at his peak and most of the extra points above these guys are due to more power play time. At evens he has five more points than Vrana, and seven more than Burakovsky this year, now that all three play in at least top-six roles. But what I really love here, and I'm going to quote it again, is this:
I love when I'm not the craziest guy in my own thread. Like, I may have a screw or two loose, but you? You're brave. Well played, sir. Carry on!</div></div>
even with any of them, Columbus would still be bottom of the division this year. You really do have a screw loose if you think Niskanen is the difference of what is gonna take the flyers to the playoffs lol

He generates 17% less offence than a replacement level player and allows the other team to generate 8% more offence than a replacement level player.
<strong>THAT IS REALLY, REALLY BAD!</strong>
Like worst Dman in the league kind of bad.
Here is Sbisa for example:

yes, and you just proved my point by picking somebody with a just as bad percentage. How can somebody be the worst when even you picked somebody who using the +/- metric are similarly bad? and not even the most notable bad defenseman around the league

so, your showing that a third pairing defenseman wasn't a super star offensively and was mediocre defensively? who woulda thought. Being below average leaguewide doesn't make somebody anywhere close to the worst one overall.

with the penguins that isn't even close to being true. Was at least better than JJ and was arguably an average third pairing guy. Problem was his contract was terrible for a third pairing guy. Thing is at least there was more depth on the right side so it meant one stayed(JJ) while the other one was sent packing.

Post Marner RFA Forward Contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Brian2016</b></div><div>Yeah, but why should a UFA make more money than an RFA? It should be the exact opposite since Marner is much younger and projects to be much, much better in 4 years than Panarin will be in 4 years.</div></div>
because of what a rfa is, not about how they play. a restricted free agent is designed to have a lot less leverage than a ufa. rfa years always are supposed to be diminished in value compared to an equal player who would be a ufa

marner was a RFA, Panarin was a UFA, so no the contract is not better when you are supposed to make much less as an RFA.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Mitchell Marner (6 Years / $10,903,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drewjenks</b></div><div><strong>Blame themselves for what exactly? </strong>
<strong>Are they forfeiting the season because their players are too expensive? </strong>
I think people are struggling to see the truth behind their current criticism of Toronto: <strong>"you can't fill out a team around those 4 contracts".</strong>
Their argument does makes sense ... but it's only one perspective of the situation (the worst possible perspective).
<strong>For example:</strong> Lets widen the lens a bit and compare the new cap situation to other NHL teams.
<strong>Can Toronto afford to build a team around the Top-9 forwards that they've locked in?</strong>
$11,630,000 x 5 years = Matthews
$11,000,000 x 6 years = Tavares
$10,890,000 x 6 years = Marner
$6,960,000 x 5 years = Nylander
$3,500,000 x 4 years = Kerfoot
$3,400,000 x 4 years = Johnsson
$3,200,000 x 3 years = Kapanen
$2,250,000 x 2 years = Hyman
$770,000 x 2 years = Moore (or replacement)
<strong>$53,600,000 = Total Cap-Hit</strong> (top-9 forwards)
<strong>$5,950,000 = Average Cap-Hit</strong> (top-9 forwards)
<strong>The answer to this question is an easy yes .</strong>
Many teams are actually spending a similar amount or more on their top 9 forwards (their 9 most expensive forwards).
But most of them don't have a forward group this talented:
<p class="c"><strong>Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Moore - Kerfoot - Kappy</strong></p>
However ... I still don't think Dubas did a very good job ... why TF did Lou not get one more year to negotiate these contracts ...</div></div>
blame themselves for another overpayed contract which makes the cap magic tougher, definitely not impossible but why spend an extra 4million a year if you don't have to? That is a decent player's contract.

as I said the moment the Matthews contract was inked. The leafs did it to themselves. They way overpaid Matthews which left them with no choice but to also overpay Marner. They have only themselves to blame.
