<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wrestlingfan5</b></div><div>So he’ll be 34 and look at kris letang? Nobody really gave that contract to much crap</div></div>

Letang took a paycut from his previous contract though, everyone kind of understood that the term was the cost of doing business on that one. You're giving Hedman a raise and also giving him a ton of term.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wrestlingfan5</b></div><div>But yes, probably honestly won’t sign for 6 years, I’m more looking at AAV.</div></div>

The two are inherently tied though. He could take a Letang contract and make less than his current AAV for a long term. Or he could take a short term contract and probably get a mild raise, assuming he doesn't fall off a cliff. If you're looking at an 8.5 AAV, you're probably looking at a 1-2 year contract. And honestly, that would be smarter than the Letang thing if you care about your team beyond 2026. The Penguins are living and dying for the next three years and then entering a rebuild, and that's why everyone was like "yeah the Letang contract makes sense for this team's situation", because who care what the last three years of Letang's deal look like if the team is rebuilding?

Is Tampa planning on following the same path? Given the contracts they just handed out to Sergachev, Cernak, Cirelli and (to a lesser extent) Point, I would think probably not. They're planning to continue being at least vaguely competitive for the rest of the decade.
