True Contender

Yeah and they won the same number of playoff games as the Buffalo Sabres. Just making the playoffs is not "contending." Look at every team that has won the Cup ever, they all had depth up and down the lineup which is exactly what the Oilers lack. Having just a strong top six only wins championships in high school.

True Contender
Maybe a true contender for a playoff spot. Depth is a serious issue here, the bottom six looks ugly and the d core has some holes.

For what this team needs, Hoffman makes them worse. Good player, but not a fit. Also no way Hyman signs for that.

You are severely overvaluing Hronek. Sergachev is already twice the player and Hronek really is not all that great. Tampa would laugh at Yzerman for that trade offer.

Kenny’s Last Chance
The Leafs were looking into Glendening at the deadline so to say they aren't interested is completely false. I think Green at 2 years and $5 million is fair, he's been the Wings best defenseman the past two years and no one seems ready yet to fill his role and minutes yet. Hopefully this time they'd be able to trade him at the next deadline and get something for him. Also, most have speculated that he'll only play for Washington or Detroit, not sure if there is any truth to that but it's worth noting.

What Deadline KH would have to do to save his job
The Flyers have already rejected Mrazek for a 3rd rounder, so a 2nd wouldn't work.

What are you talking about? In terms of aging players, you have Zetterberg, Kronwall, Ericsson, Daley and Nielsen. That's five guys, everyone else is young. They are not old by any stretch.

Pit Trade - Hagelin for Helm and Sheahan
Makes some sense, Pens need a 3rd and 4th line center and Helm and Sheahan aren't horrible options. I could see Helm's cap hit and a potential Sheahan raise as being a problem.

I like it. Two issues though: 1. Although that probably is a fair price for Trouba, Winnipeg will want more. 2. Rasmussen will not play in Detroit for at least 2 years.

Tavares
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Truebeliever</b></div><div>It took me a minute to figure out that you were projecting ahead a year, which is hard to imagine. Getting JT would sure put the Red Wings back on the map, but then why on earth keep Zetterberg in the #2 centre spot?
Not sure the D is at all close to being up to snuff. Maybe there's a way to trade Zetterberg and or Abdelkader for some better D.
At forward, I'd forget about Vanek. He has the heart of a ... a ... a ... ok, he has no heart. If JT were going to come to Motown, he'd want better wingers than that. Tatar is decent, but you'd be better to trade 2-for-1 and get a Pacioretty, Marchand, Kucherov or Skinner than try to make a go of it with the likes of Vanek.
You can afford it: you're way overpaying Mantha for a second contract. He's great for a 22-year-old, but he's not GREAT. He's going to have to get a few more years under his belt.</div></div>
Zetterberg is not going anywhere. Abdelkader isn't going to get you a better D unless you throw in a high draft pick. I agree that the D is not that good, but look at Pittsburgh, their D was NOT that good for both of their Cup runs, but they implemented a system to get around their average (at best) D-core. I think Vanek really liked Detroit and I saw more heart and passion than I've seen in a long time out of him last year. Maybe he was trying to earn a contract, but who knows. I think a chance to maybe win a cup towards the end of his career would hopefully give him a boost.

Vegas still has to pay Clarkson, therefore they'd be paying Abdelkader less and they get a player who will be in the lineup every night. If cap dumping doesn't happen, explain the Bickell trade to Carolina or the Stepan trade to Arizona or the original Clarkson trade to Columbus. Cap dumping happens all the time.

As much as I'd like to see your trade for Namestnikov happen, I think Tampa feels pretty comfortable right now with Vasilevsky and Budaj so trading Mrazek (and his contract) probably won't get it done. I do think that if Holland could clear some space, the Wings could use a young, skilled guy like Namestnikov or Andre Burakovsky from Washington.

Athanasiou later Detriot
I think Holland will probably match any offer sheet for Athanasiou, as dumb as Holland has been, I think he'll figure out a way to fit him in. Not a bad idea though, I could see Athanasiou fitting well in Carolina.

Zero chance, even for Guentzel and Sprong, it won't happen. Larkin didn't have the best season last year, but his ceiling is higher than just about anyone you could offer (outside of Crosby, Malkin, Kessel and Letang).

The most excited scenario to the Pens
I honestly think that Pittsburgh is one of the few teams that could probably afford to offer sheet Draisaitl. Their window is still wide open and first round picks in the 20-30 range every year aren't going to help a whole lot in regards to winning another Stanley Cup in the near future. They have one of the strongest cores in the league already and adding Draisaitl would just bolster it even more. They could possibly recoup one of the lost first rounders in a Phil Kessel trade. I see a fit for Kessel in Dallas (need a top nine scorer still), LA (need speed and skill), and possibly Edmonton (someone needs to at least come close to Draisaitl's production as his replacement).

Not nearly enough for Athanasiou. Holland would probably laugh at that trade offer and rightfully so. It's also basically a lock that Bonino is not coming back, sounds like he could possibly end up in Nashville. Sheary for Manson is not enough either. I'm sure teams have offered more than that for Manson and obviously it hasn't worked.

As a Red Wings fan, I can tell you that Smith isn't worth more than $2 million. He really doesn't bring much to the table other than bad decisions at bad times. He would be just another guy NYR would have to buy out in 2 years.

Rebuild Should Happen Now
This is a catastrophe. Zetterberg is not going anywhere and I doubt Toronto is interested in giving up a first rounder for an aging player like him, even if he can help them right now. This team is clearly broken, but I still don't think a full rebuild is necessarily needed. There are/were several young players on the trade market that could make this team better now and keep the team young. For example, Nathan Mackinnon, Andre Burakovsky, Sami Vatanen, Anthony Duclair, etc. Now I know these players will cost A LOT, but the Wings might have the pieces to a couple deals happen. Trading draft picks in the next two drafts shouldn't be off limits because chances are that the player you acquire via trade will be better than whatever those picks turn out to be. Also, "Top" Red Wings prospects like Dennis Cholowski and Dominic Turgeon among others don't project to be number one defenseman or top line forwards, but they do have value in trades because of their labels as "Top" prospects. Lastly, a guy like Gustav Nyquist should entice some teams on the trade market, Anaheim being one that needs a goal scorer.

What the Red Wings should do
Since Drouin just got traded to the Canadiens (also a divisional team) for Segachev and a conditional pick, I think Sproul, a 2nd and a 5th would have been pretty enticing to Tampa. I think the trade with Anaheim could have included more, but it does address a significant need for both teams: the Ducks need a scorer and the Wings obviously need a defenseman. Anaheim is going to have issues on D with the expansion draft so I think a trade like this could be enough for them to trade Vatanen instead of possibly losing him or some other good defenseman for nothing.
