<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draft_em_sign_em_trade_em</b></div><div>For Marner to stay he'll have to accept being equal to Nylander and sign for $11.5 AAV, rather than get $12 AAV which is reportedly his asking price now.
I"m sure Nylander's asking price last summer was cheaper before he finally signed mid season.
So Tre can shoot himself in the foot again and watch Marner score at a 110 point pace by mid season and have Mitch then request $12.5 + AAV.</div></div>
If they decide to keep him, he resigns before the season starts.
If he does not want to resign before the season, you have serious talks with teams about moving him and make a deal.
Nobody actually knows what direction they’re going. You have 1 insider saying 1 thing and another saying something completely different. It’s a cat and mouse game right now between player/agent/team.
They aren’t going to risk losing him for nothing July 1 2025.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Barup</b></div><div>I don’t know bout you but this team is way better then with him</div></div>
You aren’t wrong at times, but just because they are better without him doesn’t mean Treliving makes a deal just to make a deal and move on. You still have to play responsibly with asset management and get the most value/return that helps the leafs or makes them better. He will go to another team and dominate it’s bound to happen.
6OA is a great pick, but still not for certain that prospect they pick turns into anything even close to what Marner was and will be when he moves on. It could be a complete bust, and then what? It can be part of the package for sure though.
The emotional move is everyone wants to just trade him and be done with it. But watch Leafs Nation when Marner is dominating in another market and everyone is saying Treliving should have got more for him and want him fired. It’s too on brand.
The argument about TOR being better without him can be made with other players too. When Reilly got suspended they won almost every game and played significantly better. AM34 was injured against the Bruins, they dominated without him during those games. The players around the superstars rely on them so much when one is missing they are forced to step it up and play to the level they are capable.

Toronto declines.
Marner is worth more than 6OA.
And that’s not me over-valuing him, it’s based on other realistic proposals. Let’s not forget, if he’s traded it will likely follow with an immediate extension (adding more value). As a result, he will go to a team he wants to go to and play for during the next 7-8 years.
The price to acquire him will be steep, and no team is going to even consider pulling the trigger without Marner already agreeing to extend with them.
Contrary to what the insiders say, I think he extends in TOR and is given 1 season under Berube to see how it goes and how the fit is. This is all with the understanding from both sides that if it does not work out, a deal will be struck with a team Marner wants to play for, and a team that is willing to pay the reasonable price to acquire his services.

If The Core 4 Isnt Traded
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JerBear2001</b></div><div>I want your honest opinion
With the players I signed, what would the lines be, what would the defensive pairings be and how would play the goalies?</div></div>
With the players you signed I’d go as follows:
Knies - Matthews - Nylander
Cowan - Tavares - Marner
Perron - Minten - Robertson
Holmberg - Dewar - McMann
Reaves
Rielly - Montour
McCabe - Roy
Benoit - Timmins
Woll
Brossoit
Quillan will need at least a year in the AHL if not 2, he is on a similar path to Abruzzese. He won’t thrive trying to make the jump from NCAA to the NHL as a 4C.
This is part of the issue Toronto has, they have too many bottom 6 guys that could potentially turn into reliable 2nd/3rd line guys if they were given the opportunity but there is no room right now.
Moving Quillan to the Marlies, and moving Timmins in a trade for a draft pick give you 2.7M to work with. You could hopefully find a back up for 2.5M (maybe Broissoit) and that would give you another 700k in cash to bring you to 3.4M which then should be enough to re-sign a guy like Edmundson who knows Berube and his system from his time in STL when they won the cup. I’d bring him back on a 3X3.
I think I’d rather Domi over Perron to which then you’d move Knies down to L3 to help balance out that line and they can be an effective hard working line. Knies won’t ever be more than a 2nd line player but I think you start Cowan on 2LW to let him adjust and then maybe move him down to L3 or next year he becomes Matthews winger.
I don’t mind some of your moves here, the key is there is lots of options to play with. It is obvious we won’t get Montour for 6.5M someone will over pay him into the 7s unfortunately but there are other high end options, Pesce, Tanev etc.
Since we are win now, Tanev is fine on a 4.5M X 4 year deal just to get him now, it’s not ideal but he would do well on our first pairing with Reilly. I also like Zadorov but not for more than 5.5M X 5.
We shall see what happens.

If Minten is going to play 4LW, might as well send him back to Junior.
More probable is Cowan plays 2LW, and Minten plays 3C with Perron and McMann/Robertson as his winger.
Cowan played wing most of the season in London.
Minten played centre primarily in Saskatoon.

Quickest Rebuild Ever
Factor in that CHI looks to be drafting Artyom Levshunov from Michigan State with 2nd overall pick to play RD. He will jump in right away and make an almost immediate impact. Also, it would be beneficial for Korchinski to be more than a 7D to develop and get exposure.
Skjei - Jones
Vlasic - Levshunov
Korchinski - Schneider
Add a 7th D at around 1.5M.
Give Schneider another 500k.
Likely need to sweeten the pot to pry Schneider away from NYR also.
Could see a team like TOR approaching CHI for that pick at #18 in exchange for their #23 pick. Obviously TOR would include something along side that. But to trade up and select Eisserman, I think putting someone like Robertson on the table is worth a look if you get to pick #18 and he is still available somehow.
Like some of the ideas though, nicely done. CHI has the money to be creative but they also need to be strategic.

That’s true, I didn’t think of that. I guess the only way they could offer the 8th year would be to acquire his rights prior to July 1st but why do that when 7 years is plenty given his age.

That’s exactly where this came from..might as well see how it would play in. At least 10.5 I think. Chicago can afford any number basically within reason. All in all, a cool idea anyway.

The last two seasons he hasn’t been able to catch a break with injuries, and also wasn’t given a consistent opportunity due to coaching.
If he was given a shot to play regularly, he has a ton of potential.
People on here have proposed giving Liljegren away for almost nothing, I think this trade is very fair assuming Stanley pans out. He is a tower on the back end, is physical and is not afraid to drop the gloves. A top 4 D might be pushing it, but he’s in the top 6 for sure. Two seasons ago, he played 58 games and really came into his own. He is the type of player Toronto is looking for, a diamond in the rough although he’s far from a diamond right now.

No retention. Add in Nic Hague.
We don’t need to be retaining any salary, we need to be putting ALL our salary at work, or as much of it as we can. Win now mode.
Idea is decent however.

I was thinking the exact same thing, sure he scored 40 goals this year but he’s also 33. The deal would age poorly. Have to stay away from giving these guys long term deals just because they had a good season prior to free agency. Look what happened to Calgary, and even then Kadri and Huberdeau were quality players the last few years. People also forget, Toronto is a different market and plays a different way than Florida and Vegas, so if those two guys would even thrive who knows??

Montour deal is absolutely horrible. Why people think we should dump Marner to get ourselves even more stuck with garbage long term contracts doesn’t make any sense. I get it’s win now mode, but the leafs have to spend wisely, it’s why we are where we are and have been the last few years..
Also Shane Wright isn’t it, he has barely proven himself as being a legitimate prospect. Not to mention he has not been given much of a chance.

Different Leafs
On principal alone trading within your conference and specifically to a historical rival is never a good idea.
I see what you’re thinking in terms of value and I like that, but not much point in trading an elite, small and skilled winger for another elite, small and skilled winger that is just younger. If Marner is getting moved, ideally a high end prospect and picks come back and the cap space is utilized to upgrade the back end and possibly goaltending. Thats only if they can’t get a legitimate top 2 D back.

Game changer
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TOR</b></div><div>Zadorov has expressed interest to play in Toronto. Hoping that he’d take a bit of a pay cut and signing bonuses as long as we give him term. He’ll also have a bigger role on the team.
Debrusk was making 4 last season, he didn’t do anything significant in the regular season to ask for such a steep pay upgrade. Had a decent playoffs though. Other teams may be willing to pay more but I think Debrusk will want to go to a contending team. If debrusk doesn’t work out hopefully we can convince Bert to take 5.5 with some term.
As far as woll goes, he’s very injury prone. I see where you’re coming from but teams aren’t going to want to sign him if he can’t stay healthy. If he is healthy this season I’d do a 60-40 split for Saros. If woll can handle that and stay healthy I’d consider either letting saros walk at the end of next year as a free agent and resigning woll to a nice deal and using some of saros money to get a solid back up.</div></div>
Agreed 100 percent on all of that. 👍🏻

Well for starters I don’t think they have explored moving him, because as someone already mentioned above, despite his fall in production from the year prior, he is on par with other comparable contracts.
Absolutely no reason to have to give up a 1st to dump his contract, doesn’t make any sense at all. By your calculations, they should have given up two 1st round picks to get out of the Marleau contract 😂.

Zadorov is going to be overpaid in the high 6s or even creep into the low 7s on a multi year deal after the impact he had in the playoffs. (Montour will be another one that ends up in the same category as Z).
Debrusk will probably also fetch more than 5.5 but not by much on a multi year deal.
I like the make up of this roster and it would be ideal. Really shakes things up and has a Treliving feel to it.
A legitimate #1 is required to compete after the 1st round so Saros is a good option. If a solidified #1 is brought in, Woll will want out. Bring in Stolarz as the back up in that case.
Would rather spend the 3M to upgrade the D corpse further rather than use it to employ Drouin.
